Dominion Isotropic / Re: Decline of civility on isotropic?
« on: June 24, 2011, 08:10:44 pm »
I think isotropic is a very polite community. I play other games as well, mostly wow tcg on magic workstation, and to call the opponents there rude is a very nice way of putting it. But unfortunately there's a few players that doesn't understand civility... just had this a moment ago.

Me: gg
Opponent: very luvky boy
Me: ?
Opponent: normally i win
Me: ??
Opponent: lucky
Me: why?
Opponent: enjoy this moment
Opponent has returned to the lobby.

I've had the EXACT conversation before, what was the guy's name?

I've had that conversation too, possibly with the same guy, but I don't think we should call people being sore losers on this forum, because everybody can get frustrated. I generally wouldn't argue who got lucky or did not because it's pointless, but when you're playing a very frustrating game, sometimes you just do it, even if doesn't serve any purpose and is mostly annoying to the opponent. I don't think Isotropic really needs a black list.

7452
Of course, the simplest answer is: Unless you have a good reason not to, discard the two cards.

However, the exact answer is definitely more complicated than that. Does anyone have any inputs about this?

Well, the first thing to know here is wether or not you are going Torturer too or not. If you're not and have trashing, I think you should just take the 10 Curses quickly and trash them aggressively (multiple trashers than will trash each other in the process), so that their Torturers are much less effective after that. Otherwise, well, why aren't you playing Torturer ?

Also, is your opponent going for a Torturer chain, or does he simply have a Torturer as a +3 cards Militia ? In this case, yes, your rule basically works. If he's going for a Torturer chain and you are too, then I would be quicker to take the Curse. I think most people discard way too much against Torturer, although obviously, in the absence of trashing, you pretty much have to discard.

Dominion Isotropic / Re: Isotropic Facts & Quirks

I absolutely agree in general, but I think the common case here is unfriendly enough to new players that it's worth it.

How is it so unfriendly ? First, you have to read the FAQ. The, even if you didn't read the FAQ, the first time you see that you'll probably clik a few times and realize it serves no purpose... not sure how this is such a big annoyance. Yes, the Secret Chamber thing is a corner case, but why not following the rules when the problem is frankly non-existent ?

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Wishing Well/Scout Combo
« on: June 24, 2011, 07:20:15 am »
I don't believe any card is "crappy". Some just have limited uses.
Pearl Diver (Ironically the card under your name as I type this) would like to have a word with you.

You really think Pearl Driver i the worst card in the game ? It really isn't. Being spammable not only makes it's effet somewhat relevant, it also turns on Conspirator, it's an action for Throne Room or King's Court, and most of all, as Beyond Silver taught us (yes, I do worship this article), it becomes better than Silver at some point.

Whereas Scout is simply terrible 90% of the time, ok 5% of the time, and awesome 5% of the time.

Dominion Isotropic / Re: Decline of civility on isotropic?

I'll be completely blunt and to the point. i believe this community is kinder, simply because the average age of the player-base is higher.

This isn't a get-off-my-lawn statement coming from an old man. I've known tons of very polite, well-behaved young teenagers... but I think the internet age (faceless, anonymous social interactions) are breeding inpolite behaviour in the younger generation.

I grew up in an age where if you were in a social atmosphere with someone and called them a retard, you got your bell-rung. These days, with anonymous internet, and non face to face social interactions, there's no physical pain as a consequence of being a jerk to someone.

I've noticed a VERY strong correlation between age and civility in every game I've played, and MTG, LOL and WoW are probably all the worst communities. It's my opinion (and I'm very possibly completely out to lunch) that age has a huge factor to this.

As a 18-year old, I completely agree. That being said, while there certainly is a generation effect, I also agree with chwhite that it's probably mainly a question of age rather than one of generation.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Cards we love! (and why)
« on: June 24, 2011, 07:00:16 am »
Best Design :
- Tactician. I mean really, this card is so beautiful. You "pass" your turn to take a double turn after. Simple enough, even if it ends up being so much more than that. It also teaches players that one big turn and one horrible turn is better than two mediocre turns.

Most Fun :
- Gardens. I love how it sometimes warps the game and I remember, back when I learned the game, when we somehow ended up with 60-card decks in a Garden battle. It was pretty hilarious when we realized we had passed the 100 points.

Most Important :
- Village. I don't think I really need to explain why, but whitout Villages, the game would suck. That's why I'm happy to see Walled Village as another Village variant outside of the traditionnal 1-per set. Also, newer players love it.

Honorale Mentions :
- Apprentice, apparently everyone loves it and, well, so do I. Trashing enormous things is always fun, especially Peddlers or Forges :D.
- Venture. Not sure why, but I love it.
- Steward. Again, already mentioned, but a very elegant card, competing with Tactician for best design.
- Embargo. Rewards, well, thinking intelligently.
- Remodel. Again, not sure why, but I love building Remodel decks, even when they're terrible. obviously good on it's own as both an early trasher and a end-game accelerator too.
- Duration cards in general. Seaside was my firt expansion, and it remains my favorite one so far mainly because of them.

7457
It's probably the worst Village so far, but it is still much welcomed, because playing endless games with no +Actions can get boring.

Cool meeple symbol too. I hope I'll be able to find one of those (have all the promos so far, don't intend in stopping now  ;)).

7458
Well actually, there weren't totally wrong. Ghost Ship and Torturer are not really annoying (a little, but they're attacks) when there's no +2 Actions card. And Fishing VIllage is the craziest of those, so it allows to set up Torturer/Ghost Ship chains very easily. At least when the only +2 Actions card on the table is Festival or Nobles, you have to work for it.

I do love me some Fishing Village, but let's face it, it's because it's very, very powerful (much more than Torturer and Ghost Ship relatively to it's cost.

Feedback / Re: The Bible of Donald X.
« on: June 20, 2011, 11:39:51 am »
Just wanted to say by the way that this part of the forum is just awesome. I had already read a few of these posts, but not nearly all of them, and it's very nice to have them all in one place.

Ditto on adding the Secret History articles, and maybe Donald's recent post on these very forums about most hated cards.

7460
Yes, the theme is not believable (except for City which really is  a growing Village, and other exceptions), you basically have to accept it. The game is awesome enough that I do. Also, most people I play with couldn't care less about the theme of any game (and although I do like a good theme, a lack thereof doesn't bother me too much).

If you're looking for a Dominion-like with more theme, I guess Thunderstone is a good choice (never played it so no idea if the gameplay's actually good).

7461
Possession and Familiar are the top offenders for me, but Possession is actually proposed, so I voted for that. Anybody who's been on the recieving end of Possession/Golem deck understands how horrible this card is to play against. Worst of all, I think people are overvaluing because of how horrible it feels when someone plays it, and are playing it more than they should, especially considering it is incredibly hard to get. I see people going for Possession as they only Potion card, and it should please me, because they lose so much time I'm likely to win, but it still annoys me because they're going to play it at some point.

As for Familiar, well, I actually think, now that I analyse it, that it's worse than Possession. The feeling of having 2 and a Potion on second turn of a Familiar game is just that horrible. It's turn 3, and you've basically already lost. At least with Possession, you're only losing on turn 15 or so.

I used to hate Treasure Map, but I don't anymore, because the card is just weak. Sure, you can get lucky, and it's annoying when it happens, but more often than not, seeing my opponent buy Treasure Map when no enablers are available is a pretty good sign.

I'm not sure what's so frustrating with Smugglers though. Sure, it's a variance card that can be frustrating at times, but I don't see it being anywhere the other cards mentionned it, or other not mentioned such as Sea Hag or Ghost Ship.

Edit : reading those answers, I have to agree with Swindler and Tournament being really up there too.

7462
So yeah, 3 cards would make it worse because nobody would ever buy actions along with it.

Logic fail :(.

Worse in the sense of overpowered. I admit it wasn't clear in this sentence though ^^.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Using Steward's +2 coin early
« on: June 16, 2011, 07:50:23 pm »
Copper Copper Copper Copper Steward >> Gold is one I find hard to pass up.

Yeah I would be interested in everyone's opinion about that one, because I also tend to take the Gold, but I'm not sure wether it's right or not.

theory's representative card will forever be chapel.

Is it ? For me, it would be a Silver, or rather absence thereof, or a Great Hall/Wishing Well.

theory's Chapel play seemed obvious to me, but Beyond Silver certainly did not.

I personally would love to be Tactician. Seaside is my favorite expansion and I find the design on Tactician just perfect.

I don't think it helps Goons enough in getting crap away to compensate the fact that it will sometimes prevent you from drawing that essential 2nd, 3rd or Xth Goons that allows the megaturns.

Dominion General Discussion / Is Golem worth it ?
« on: June 16, 2011, 07:18:44 pm »
I don't like Golem that much, but I see people going for Golem as their only Potion buy pretty often.

Now I certainly underrate it, as it seems good to spam a very powerful card (curse givers notably), but doesn't it slows you down too much to buy a Potion which very possibly won't even give you a Golem right away ?

I would be interested to hear top player's thoughts on this.

7467
Masquerade is already overpowered, be thankful that most people are filling their decks with actions instead of just buying Provinces turn 9 onwards (just made that statistic up, but it honestly feels like that when I'm playing Big Money Masquerade).

So yeah, 3 cards would make it worse because nobody would ever buy actions along with it.

Nice. I predict Nobles as the highest-rank then.

While Familiar isn't a dead card later on, the question is wether or not Potion is. If the only (good) Potion card is Familiar, I'd go with the Sea Hag. If there is Possession, Trasnmute; Vineyard or Alchemist, I'd go with the Familiar.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Is the point counter cheating?
« on: June 15, 2011, 02:41:17 am »
I use the point tracker (the isotropic included one) because I'm too lazy to count complicated VPs (Vineyards typically), but I do think it is varying from the original game of Dominion. Then my laziness comes in and I play with it anyway. But I understand people requesting not to play with it.

The good thing at least is that now that the log only show the latest turns, it isn't hhypocritical to disable point counter (as before, you could simply do a quick CTRL F for simple VPs).

Hey, I suggest banned members to have a "Possession" title.

Although I guess "Curse" would simply work too.

How did you order them ? I'm pretty sure Pawn is generally better than Herbalist and Pearl Diver...

7472
Very interesting, thanks for the clarification.

29% is a bit more than I expected, but it sounds about right in that it confirms that you should probably never buy it without heavy trashing or some other kind of enabler (e.g Warehouse, Haven).

Other Games / Re: What other games do you enjoy playing?
« on: June 13, 2011, 08:41:31 pm »
As for video games, I played Warcraft II and III as well as WoW and Civilization I to V (which is the only video game I play right now).

As for board games... where do I begin ? I play a lot of them, especially Dominion but also family games such as Ticket to Ride (the Europe version especially), Colons of Catane, Carcassonne, Smallworld, Alhambra, but also party games (Time's Up!, Jungle Speed, Werewolf, Bang!) and more "serious" games (Le Havre, Tikal, War of the Rings) and some cooperative games (Knights of the Round Table, Pandemic, Horror at Arkham). I played RFTG once or twice and liked it, but never really had the chance to play more.

Then I also played WoW TCG for two years or so and now play the Game of Thrones LCG. Finally I like to play Tarot, which you've probably never heard of but is a very popular traditionnal card game in France.

Do try out Bang! as a drinking game by the way, it's quite something :D.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: First player advantage
« on: June 13, 2011, 08:26:46 pm »
I always wondered about that but it turns out that CouncilRoom does have this stat available on the profile of each player, and the 1st player is consistently advantaged, so there you go (you can check the top player's profiles to verify this).

No idea how it is on multiplayer games but I don't see it being that different. The VP chip thing seems better than the other one, but I honestly don't think it's too big a deal either. It has a definitive effect, and not only on the fact that you can get one more turns, but also in that playing cards like Militia first gives you a pretty big advantage, but I do think it isn't that huge an effect that you need to invent house rules to circumvent it.

7475
For example, as a political sciences student, I don't understand this result, and much less so the math involved to find it.

What does this result actually amounts to, basically ?
