It's a mini horse traders!

I like it fine.  It has a much deeper choice now, you're knocking something out of your hand either way, but do you want to remove that crap permanently or take a dollar right now?

I thought you didn't have Spice Merchant at all, and I didn't notice Pawn.  Shows how much attention I was paying.

I firmly believe everyone understands the game enough to be 10 ranks above wherever they actually are, but can't resist shiny fun experiments.  I think people move up when they get bored of trying to build a Highway Salvager deck that gets outraced by Jack and buckle down some.

6779
I'd remove the dollar reward for trashing a card.  It's the straw on the camel's back making it too strong, and it's not a very interesting choice when you think about it.  You don't need a dollar to convince you to trash a curse, the dollar makes trashing a copper a no-brainer instead of a thought-provoking decision like it is with Trader or Salvager, and it's too doubtful you'll be trashing anything else, the only other thing you could trash is an unplayable terminal, in which case, why are you wasting your action on a 2$ card instead of your superior terminal?

Do you think you should have bought Embargo the round you hit 5$?

The IGGs were embargoed with six left.  Embargo was hard to buy, Spice Merchant was the only +buy.  Not sure that leaves the kingdom as flexible as you say.

It looks great.  Inn is an edge case.  I think it's balanced

Dominion General Discussion / Embargo versus potion

I wanted to hear some opinions on an unusual play I made the other day involving Embargo.

http://councilroom.com/game?game_id=game-20111118-145823-229fcfd7.html

The set, in categorized terms, was:

Trashers: Spice Merchant
Cursers: Ill-gotten Gains, Embargo
Terminal actions: Cutpurse, period
Cantrips: Alchemist, Lab, Pawn, Cartographer, Spice Merchant, Mining Village.

So we have trashable treasure and untrashable curses, making curses a big deal and IGG a strong buy.  Overall this is a weak board and though Alchemist is one of my worst cards, I think both of us wished we could open with a potion, but felt threatened by the Embargo.

My opponent opened Cutpurse/Silver.  I rather questionably purchased a Spice Merchant instead, since I disliked an untrashable cutpurse and wasn't thaat worried about the IGG race.

The second round, he plays a couple of weak buys.  I played first.  I come to my purchase right before my second reshuffle and draw 4$.  I realize - hey, my opponent hasn't played his cutpurse yet.  Meaning it's probably in his hand right now.  And since his other buys weren't all that impressive I bet he's about to hit five.  I reasoned, he gets one buy before the reshuffle, and it's probably 5 or 6$.  That's too much to pay for an Embargo.  I can trash potion if I need to.. I bought a Potion.

He pondered his buy and felt obligated to buy a 5$ card.  He went on to lose the game, but I didn't feel like I learned much about my gambit because it seemed like his total ignorance of the IGG stack lost him the game, not the two alchemists I sneaked in nor the 4$ he spent on an Embargo instead of a silver variant he could keep.

What do you guys think about buying Potion against Embargo?  It seems like it's a good idea in situations like this.  Maybe more often than that, and I'm just not paying attention.  Or maybe my move was foolish and he didn't exploit it right or I got lucky.  What think??

6784
Waaait maybe I'm miscounting and it goes to councilroom with the combo.

Discard a treasure, then

6785
I don't see any reason to use awkward rule bending.  Just stick with plus-cards but amp it up.

Servant:

Discard a card.  +3 cards.
Reaction : when you discard this, you may reveal it.  If you do, +2 cards.

Hey cool, it combos with itself.  Still balanced though IMO, comboing once makes it a smithy variant, thats fine.

How deeply are games remembered, and how fast does councilroom update?

I can't find a recent game I want, just had that quick question, didn't want to make a thread..

What he said, but I can't believe he forgot Minion's favorite village: Fishing Village.  Village will often use its draw and hit a treasure, Fishing village just gives the money straight to you.

6788
If he would buy a useful card that turn, it doesn't matter if he has Counting House or not, trigger the reshuffle.

Is it an unfair comparison to say that with perfect card counting, Sea Hag is half as good as the offense of spy when they are half through their deck, 3/4 as good if they are 3/4 of the way through their deck, and every bit as good as offensive spy if they are n-1 cards through their deck?

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Golem + Scheme + 1 good action/attack
« on: November 15, 2011, 04:14:54 pm »

The biggest hurdle in this strategy is the time to buy that Golem - you need to get the potion and then draw 4p before an alternative strategy has time to get set up and win. But I think getting a single Golem can be done in reasonable time - it's about as hard to get as a Gold, and the scheme and the X are presumably easy to get with it.

I would argue that Bank is a much better approximation of how hard Golem is to get.  If the potion were a silver, then Golem would cost the same as a gold.  But alchemy cards throw an additional wrench in the machinery because they require you to get a specific combination of treasure to get it, two potions and a silver won't buy golem, although anything from gold silver copper to four coppers and a silver buys a gold.

Golem should be treated like a mini-kc.  Kinda.

6792
ohh that makes sense.

When I read the text of scheme, I always thought that seaside cards wouldnt be eligible until they had played out both their turns, but isotropic gives me the option of returning them to the top of the deck (new) so I have to consider I might be wrong.

I'd always guessed that you would just miss the second effect if you returned them to the top of the deck immediately, until today when I played a set with Scheme and Haven.  Keeping the card set aside the whole game seemed weird...

What's the correct interaction?

Cache and a 2$, more literally.

If you opened Steward/Silver, your deck has about 11$ in it distributed over 12 cards, 11/12$ per card.

Buying a gold puts you at 15/13$, trashing two copper isn't even an improvement, taking you to 9/10$.

Usually you should buy the gold, but if you want a head start on an engine with lots of cheap pieces, maybe you can trash a copper.

Is anyone allowed to write material in this subforum?  Is it presumptuous to do so if you don't have a high ranking or good reputation?
I'm only level 29 but I think I could write something people would like to read if I keep the subject specific enough

Dominion Isotropic / Re: Veto strategy
« on: November 11, 2011, 08:33:38 pm »
It looks like I never posted in this thread.

If some combo looks way too silly and fun to resist, I will leave it in and veto stuff that counters it.  (not always an attack - sometimes it's a trasher that will make gardens unplayable, sometimes it's a good BM card).

I always veto Vault for being too good of a big money card.  It's probably not the worst big money card, nor is it a swingy one.  I just dropped from 15 to 10 because I didn't understand how Secret Chamber tied to a cripplied Smithy could possibly good, then went from 10 to 20 play BM vault everytime it came up, and now I'm p sick of the card.  I still play around with Jack, actually, I like seeing what single action cards I can fit into it..

My highest veto priority is Treasure Map if it's even remotely playable.  I believe it to be the most variant card in the game.

I veto Chapel usually, just because I'm bad at Chapel.  I always feel guilty though.  I promise.

Otherwise I leave traps in, and veto one of two choices when I'm not sure like ehunt said.  Sometimes I like all the cards and veto one of the ones that isn't going to be purchased at all.  Perhaps that sacrifices some rank for some fun, but perhaps not, the remaining cards might all be cards I'm good at.

I really would like veto mode more if people used it with some logic besides "Sea hag is gay" and "Possession is gay".  As I've said I dislike variant cards but that's not really the biggest trend as far as I can tell.  Maybe there's a legitimate reason to have a preference against them but I suspect it's just people giving in to some sort of cognitive bias.  Just like "Counterspell is gay, but Terror is fine" from MtG.

Pirate ship, Noble Brigand, Oracle, Tribute, etc, all turn that on its head though.  Jester is lots of fun.  You sure you want to leave gold on top of your deck?  Maybe I have a jester, maybe i don't, bwahahaha.

Variants and Fan Cards / Re: Yet another oddball card

Seems like costing it lower and letting it stack your deck (instead of trashing infinite curses and coppers and estates AND stacking your deck) would be better design.

How does bag of gold have a better gain rate than diadem?  Diadem seems way more useful, you certainly look at the weaker prizes during a phase of the game where gold is better than bags and silvers are better than workshops
