Variants and Fan Cards / Re: Revised versions of published cards

Shuffling every turn IRL sucks though (I am Criticizing Official Cards here, I'm not crazy about Scavenger really).
Also, stash's "honest" usage comes the closest to competing with other strategies when the game is a slog.  Making it key in on a condition that signals the gametype is enginebased likely means it is buffed only in games where there are even stronger incentives to stay away from 5$ Silver than usual.  You want this to trigger on buying a victory card or a Gold entering play or somesuch.

Concision hacking is fun.
"+1 Buy.
Draw the top card of your deck.  If it's an Action or Treasure, you may play it."
Why not?
It even seems like the preferred interaction with Nights without directly referencing an expansion mechanic.  I think the 5d chess Gamble/Settler/Moneylender combo is worth sacrificing.

A choice sounds fine.  It could also simply happen when you trash a Night, my interest in it is that empty and symbolic.

Making it impossible for Transmute to gain a Transmute seems like "killing the darling" :/  I don't care whether it can gain a Gold or a Duchy, but gaining itself at least some of the time is the meme.

Rules Questions / Re: Militia rule change
« on: March 10, 2020, 06:36:35 pm »
Other than the updated shuffle rule, "+2 cards" is identical to "+1 card, +1 card".

I thought that was only true for Draw-to-X? If it's true in general, though, I agree that it makes sense for "Discard down to 3" to be equivalent to "Discard [(your hand size)-3] cards".
However, either way, I'm with Jeebus on the "should it be changed for the purpose a few obscure interactions" issue.

Unless it changed with the new shuffle rule; it was definitely true originally. It mattered for Stash. With the new shuffle rule it is technically possible that you could draw 2 cards at the same time, but I don't know if it's written in the rules anywhere in second edition.

What is the "new shuffle rule" that you reference?
Old school rules on shuffling was that when you draw 2 or more cards, you draw as many as you can, then stop and shuffle your discard pile into your deck, then continue drawing until you've drawn the number you're supposed to.
New rule is that when you draw 2 or more cards and can see already there's not going to be enough, you shuffle your discard piled face down, slide it underneath your deck, then draw all the cards you need all at once.

These are usually equivalent excepting for a couple narrow card interactions.

Rules Questions / Re: Militia rule change
« on: March 10, 2020, 06:01:24 pm »
Is there A .a special rule that whenever you discard a group of cards, you must select one of those cards to reveal to all players, or is there B. a general rule that after each "thing" that happens, other players get a chance to see the state of the top card of your discard pile before you partake in the next "thing".

A. seems a little silly, but if it has always been A, then militia is necessarily discarding 2 cards, because otherwise we would view the first card discarded because it individually comprises a group of 1 card and at least one of that group of 1 must be revealed.

I feel like B still allows for two different interpretations of Militia, while most people seem to post that it only allows for one.  The first interpretation is that Militia causes you to discard two cards.  The second interpretation is that Militia has you recursively discard cards one at a time until you reach 3, but this entire process is considered a single "thing".  Stacking the cards and discarding them is just, doing the "thing" so "quickly" that players can't pick up on some of the information about the process - though they are still able to glean information about the second card.

There are lots of spicy takes if I can convince people that second interpretation is plausible.  For instance, if discarding three cards and gaining a gold for the Sky's Gift is a single thing you could use the gold to hide all three cards (but you could still also show the third one if they are decided to be separate events.)

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Speculation on Ways

I can only dispute other people since as far as I can tell these were removed from the wiki.  So like hey I'm not going out of my way to be adversarial ok.

I think Way of the Butterfly will reference metamorphosis, and will be "trash this: gain an action card costing exactly 1$ more".
I think it could possibly say "and then play it" with the logic of everything is ok if everybody gets to do the busted thing, Donate style, but without "and then play it" it still seems like it could get some activations, Moneylender if nothing else.

Guys what is the point of f.ds if we don't come up with obscure ways a card isn't strictly better than another card?

In addition to Worker's Village, Chameleon, and Villa, the board also has Toil, Druid and some sort of megaturn dynamic (Bridges, Goons, Fortunes, lots of things make this plausible). Druid's bonuses are the Moon's Gift, the Sky's Gift, and the Flame's Gift.  You just reshuffled before drawing this hand.  You play out 6$ and multiple buys, but you did so by drawing most of the bad cards in your deck, what's left in your deck is pretty good, probably good enough to megaturn.  You have an unused Druid in hand.  Buying a Duchy is dumb.  Buying an engine card that will occur on the other side of the next shuffle, on the other side of a game-deciding megaturn, is dumb.  Nothing matters except guaranteeing your next turn is explosive.
You should scoff at Villa, because the play is to buy a Worker's Village, so that it will go to your discard pile, then to buy Toil and play Druid from your hand, selecting the Moon's Gift to topdeck your Worker's Village.  Your next turn will not dud.

Hearthstone / Re: Semi-interesting Hearthstone moments

So there's a Shaman card that says "transform a minion in to a random minion that costs 3 more" and my opponent puts a 10-cost minion on the board, and I'm thinking "There are no 13 cost minions, so this spell should destroy the 10 cost minion." nope. It turned it into a 12 cost minion. I wish Hearthstone cards were as clear and straightforward about what they do as Dominion cards.

My most stubborn pet peeve is that Divine Favor says "Draw cards until you have as many cards in hand as your opponent," but they programmed "Draw a number of cards equal to the difference between the number of cards in your opponent's hand less the number of cards in your hand,", so if there is one card left in your deck, and your opponent has two cards in hand, and you play it as you last card, you don't full suicide like you should.

I have plenty of other pet peeves though, like how whenever I use Slam to damage my Gurubashi Beserker on turn six, I don't gain any attack, although the Gurubashi Beserker does, but when I play a Novice Engineer on turn seven, I draw a card, even though by that point it seems like perhaps Novice Engineer should draw herself a card to play with.

Hearthstone indeed has some funky card text, but it consistently specifies "Give your hero X attack" when they buff your hero. This is a mistake you're only going to make once.
I am not criticitizing consistency at all.  I think they've gotten a lot better about consistency, Druid of the Claw vs. Ancient of War has had its wording corrected and similar inconsistencies haven't come up.  I am definitely pedantically wanting/wish for the cards to do what they say they do in English.  If brevity and real estate is so critical that it's really worth it to write the cards wrong, why doesn't Gurubashi Beserker say "When Gurubashi Beserker takes damage, +3 Attack".  You would equally determine who is getting the attack by pattern recognition/experimentation, but it'd be even shorter.

I am pretty spoiled by other card games indulging my need for a pedantic level of correctness, including some digital ones.  It's not that it really degrades the introductory experience a repeatedly make novel card interactions down the line impossible to discern, it just -bugs- me that it's -wrong- each time I play the card, as much as if its art depicted nine legged "spider".

I did not understand that we counted as a threat to the town as long as we were alive, and I thought that when the last mafia was lynched we would lose if we hadn't achieved our wincon yet.  I would have appreciated better communication on that (well, unless we weren't supposed to understand that and that was part of the design)
It is my policy to not point out misinterpretations when I see them unless I am directly asked a question. The thought process being that that would favor scum factions who can actually talk about their misinterpretations over town who might also misread their role, but aren't talking about it so I don't see it.

I'm not 100% sure that that's the best way to do it, but it's worked alright so far.
Oh, this is my modding philosophy also, the location where I would argue for different communication is only in my role PM.  100% agree with not jumping in based on discussions that were visible in the third party PT

I'm really proud of my fakeclaim and how well it was accepted

I am sorry for removing you from this game MiX :(  I was paranoid that there was a faction in the game that was opposite and wanted to make everybody humans so I was shooting at someone I thought might be that faction from the way they were talking.  I knew it was also possible there was no such faction but as 3rd party I didn't actually have to care whether you were town or scum so it seemed like the only good shooting criterion.

I investigated DatSwan and got not-mafia though

It is pretty clear he's not aligned with the town, but he's also claiming he isn't.

The way my role is phrased, he could be mafia if he's a godfather, but it's usually not worth it to play around godfather.  Zombie godfather+mafia godfather is weird, too

For doing the simplest Sea Hag replacement possible, my brain intuitively says, 4 bucks: each opponent gains a curse, gain a silver to the top of your deck.

I'm a 1 shot dayvig with a weird zombie anthropology role.  Each night I target a living or dead player I didn't shoot I watch to see if zombies eat that brain.  Then if I see a zombie eat the brain I learn that zombie's behavior, and if I target the zombie with the ability and they eat a brain that night, I will learn if that zombie is "mafia" or "not mafia".  I shot MiX very early because my davyig I didn't like the restriction on not being able to watch the consumption of the brain of my dayvig and I was hopeful there were no zombies N1 so maybe I avoid the downside.  N1 I watched LaLight, no one ate the brain, but someone did eat MiX's brain, so that was sadface.  N2 I watched LaLight again, and DatSwan ate the brain, which doesn't seem like nutritional behavior he is being honest about, but probably as made zombie(s) that he is feeding aside from shraeye and he's claiming to only self target to keep his darlings secret so he hits his percentage.  N3 I targetd DatSwan and learned that DatSwan is not mafia.

Also, Glooble sent me a "Stalker Brain" night 1.  It arrived at the beginning of the night where I could use it night 1, if it was valid.  I have to be a zombie to use it, and I wasn't a zombie at that time (no comment now).  So I gave him the funny post about Netflix to convey that.  In addition to providing nutrition, it targets a player to learn if they share an alignment with me, and if they don't share an alignment with me they get roleblocked.  It's more powerful than my ability so I promise to use it at whatsoever point I may become a zombie, but I would like to keep my current level of humanness secret so it stays unclear how worthwhile it is to nightkill me.
