Highway+Teacher:
Well, Teacher combos with everything, but if you put your tokens "+card" and "+buy" on highway, it's gg.

Not sure, but I don't think that one works like that, since Teacher only let's you put a token on a supply pile you have no other tokens on. You could either make a Lab out of it that cheapens cards and still have that "Highway, why u no give +buy"-memish-problem or you could give Highway a nudge towards being a non-terminal bridge.

so it's pretty clear-cut for me that Chapel isn't the strongest card in Dominion.

I don't think it is, either. I have very little experience and I hope, I understood the ranking method concerning all cards correctly, but as of now - with only a handful of people having submitted a ranked list of all the cards - all this ranking says is: "Chapel is the best card in Dominion, if a card's absolute value was only determined by how it compares to all cards costing the same." But - and I say this not, because I think I know what I'm talking about Dominion-wise, but because it seems logical - that can't be the case, since that would split up the effect of a card and its cost in a way that cannot portray the actual strength of a card accurately.

I'm not sure how you would have to go about this (in fact, all my ideas here might be older than the sun and have been put forth before, I just didn't know about the rankings then, or Dominion, for that matter), but you could either try an intuitive approach (just what the above mentioned handful have been doing presumably) to rank all cards or you could try one that tries to separate effect and cost carefully before combining them again.

First, rankings of all the cards, based solely on the value of the card effect without considering cost, would have to be submitted (super difficult and also highly intuitive). Second, you would have to determine how well you expect a card costing "X" to perform compared to a card costing "Y". If you take $2 cards as a baseline, you probably wouldn't just assume $3 cards to be "1.5 times (3/2) better" on a regular basis, nor would you even automatically assume that a $5 cost card is 2.5 times (5/2) better than an average $2 cost card. I have to admit, I'm at a loss determining how well cards are supposed to perform compared to their cost, though. Plus, you cannot just multiply effect rating by cost factor to determine a card's true value. You would also need to take into account that card effect and cost might have to be weighted differently in different "cost categories". $ 5 cards are often crucial. Their effects are so good on an absolute basis that this justifies having a lower card effect to cost ratio.

The more I write about it, the more I think I'm starting to ramble, though. Anyways I'd be curious to see everyone ranking all cards and compare the results with the list that Qvist offered. I'd contribute myself and I'd try to help out Scout. Poor guy.

Variants and Fan Cards / Re: Really bad card ideas

That way, you could wordsmith a wordsmith into a smithy. Or, if you're really desperate to piledrive, into another wordsmith. But I guess that was possible in the original version of "Word Upgrade". What a great card!

Wait. No, you couldn't. I'm dumb. You'd have to rename the card "Wordsmithy" for that. I'm sorry for meddling in your card creation process. I've ruined it, haven't I?  ;D

Surprisingly Inn can't be turned into anything.

Wander Minnstrel
$5 - Action
+2 Actions
Reveal the top 2 cards of your deck.  Put the Actions in your hand and discard the rest.

When you gain this, look through your discard pile (including this), reveal all Action cards from it, and put them on top of your deck in any order.

Minnion
$5 - Action-Attack
+2 Actions
When you gain this or play it, each player (including you) discards his hand, looks through his discard pile, reveals 4 Action cards from it, and puts them in his hand.

Vinnyard
$P - Victory
At the end of games using this, each player reveal cards from the top of his deck until revealing one that isn't an Action.  Each Vinnyard is worth 1VP for every card revealed this way.

When you gain this, look through your discard pile (including this), reveal any number of Action cards from it and shuffle them into your deck.

Kinng's Court
$5 - Action
+2 Cards
+2 Actions
Discard 2 cards.  Look through your discard and reveal up to 3 Action cards from it.  Shuffle them into your deck.

Urchinn
$3 - Action-Attack
+1 Card
+1 Action
Each player (including you) discards down to 4 cards in hand.

When you gain this, you may trash this.  If you do, gain a Mercenary from the Mercinnary pile.

Mercinnary
$0* - Action-Attack
You may trash 2 cards from your hand.  If you do, +2 Cards, +2 Actions and each other player discards down to 3 cards in hand.

When you gain this, look through your discard pile, reveal any number of Attack cards from it, and shuffle them into your deck.

Innheritance
$7 - Event
Once per game: Move your Estate token to Innheritance.  Your Estates gain the abilities and type of Inn.

Also:

Minnt
$ 5 - Action

Reveal a card containing the word "Inn" in its name from your hand. Gain a copy of it.

When you gain this, trash all cards containing the word "Inn" in their names that you have in play.

Plus, I think, "Word Upgrade" is a little weak. How about naming it "Wordsmith" and having it read:

Wordsmith
$ 2 - Action

"Trash a card from your hand. Choose one:

-Gain a card whose name contains the name of the trashed card
or
- gain a card whose name is contained in the name of the trashed card."

That way, you could wordsmith a wordsmith into a smithy. Or, if you're really desperate to piledrive, into another wordsmith. But I guess that was possible in the original version of "Word Upgrade". What a great card!

I am aware of the recruiting mechanisms, yes  ;D. I'll have a look at most stuff around here, I read, it only ruined some, but not all social lives.

@AHoppy: To clarify my request, I do mean playing via the Making Fun Client and using Skype to talk in the meantime. I think playing with the actual cards via webcam/Skype might indeed be more work and less fun than any other form of playing Dominion ;D..

@Qvist: Nice! I did watch a bunch of your videos as well, some with German commentary, and I figured - I don't know why, but I've placed you in the Stuttgart area - you were from around here. The possibility of playing some IRL Dominion is just awesome, too!

@Ampharos: I did look at a couple of introductions before posting mine and I thought, Team Rocket following Electro Pokémon is really thematic. Plus, like, the nerd factor just went through the roof.

@Infthitbox: The time difference isn't optimal, but it's not terrible either. I make that work for most football games every week, so it should be fine!

That does sound cool. If you'd like we could play a couple of games to see, if I can keep up or at least show some promise. I did log a couple hundred games these last months, but playing bots, random opponents and some friends for fun is not really great credentials. In any case, I'll pm you my skype info and my 'schedule'. Right now, I gotta go to bed. Sidenote: What time difference are we talking about here? I'm in Heidelberg, Germany (so Berlin, Europe).

Thanks for pointing me towards the league. I've actually followed some recent league play and I agree that it would be a great opportunity to play some quality opponents. The downside is that the quality players have to play, well, me. But I guess I'm emotionally stable enough to endure some whitewashs. I'll check out the S12 signups!

Still - going out to everyone capable of skyping  ;) - my request/offer stands.

Introductions / Intro and awkward request for skype games :)

Hi!

I got Dominion Online a couple of months back, after owning some IRL expansions for like a year. Ever since I stumbled onto this forum, I read page after page of game reports and strategy articles whenever I had some time to kill. On my way to work, mostly. Finally, I decided to register and I wanted to introduce myself ("Hi") and immediately awkwardly request a skype buddy for some games of Dominion Online who is willing to play on a "sort-of-regular-basis". Here's why.

Short version:

I like Dominion. I like talking about the boards and strategies. I like people. Most people, anyway. I have a decent understanding of the cards (unrelated, I do own them all) but I'm always looking to better myself. I am from Germany, but I'm fairly fluent speaking English. And I am very self-aware about this request kinda sounding like online dating. PM me and we'll set something up. ;D

Long Version:

Eventually - before getting into Dominion Online - I found some Dominion streams online. I watched a lot of the videos that Adam H. uploaded to youtube and I quite liked the idea of his and Qvist's Skype games since Dominion 2p seems perfect for skyping. Since then, I introduced a buddy who lives in Belgium to Dominion and we've been playing a bunch of Skype games since then and it's been way more fun than playing online with only the interaction that the chat interface (which - I think - is quite horrible) provides.

In my experience, talking about the game and turns during a match or afterwards greatly enhances not only the amount of fun you're having, but what you are learning about cards and combos. Also, analyzing games puts winning and losing games into perspective, because to me it's no longer people but strategies competing. Thirdly, I like to take a minute or so to look at the board. I'm a big fan of Adam H.'s "alright, three/four, estates, what's going on here?" brief overview (I watched some games of MicQsenoch and I found him saying "alright, looks like "XY" before my brain had even processed one card's title on the board quite insane), but in games vs. unknown opponents, I sometimes feel pressured to not take up too much time. Most of the people I've played online were nice and some were willing to chat a bit (like I said, though, the chat interface is not really capable of housing the exchange of strategic ideas), but I've also encountered people who didn't seem interested in any conversation whatsoever (or they didn't see me saying "hi, good luck") and I particularly recall the weird insult "fu, ninja turtle, I don't have all day" after typing "sorry, thinking.." and taking a minute to think about a somewhat complex governor turn. Being able to talk here also alleviates the problem of someone feeling he's being slowplayed. These might seem like minor incidents to experienced online players who've seen rage quits and the likes, but I'd rather find someone who shares my views then annoy people with my trying to say hello and exchange strategic ideas.

If you read all of this and didn't roll your eyes, I think I'd like to buy you a beer.

Cheers!
