Game Reports / Re: Massive trade route fail
« on: April 19, 2016, 11:57:10 am »
In one of my first games with Prosperity, I had finally gotten a ton of Cities to level 2 and a hand of fully loaded Trade Routes... at which point I realized that I would have to trash half of them in order to play the other half. I threw my cards on the table and stormed off.

You know, there were other options. You could have played like one card every minute or so, been otherwise unresponsive to messages and waited for your opponent to resign. I have found that the best way to turn around IRL games of Dominion that you find yourself on the losing end of. Also, shouting obscene amounts of profanity when your opponent has good draws IRL is a tried and true method. Finally, telling your IRL opponent you're going to resign during your turn, then waiting for him/her to put down his/her cards and scream "You've ended your turn. My turn now!" and playing a full-scale turn never fails.

Edit: Just to clarify, I'm not saying what you did is actually comparable  ;)

I also love all sorts of music and going to festivals and concerts. Everything from indie rock to power metal and from synthpop to hardstyle is cool. :)

You sound like a really cool dude!

Dominion Online at Shuffle iT / Re: Creating Dominion
« on: April 13, 2016, 11:43:55 am »
Yeah I'm pretty pissed at this. I have all the Dominon cards IRL, so I don't need an offline mode. I paid $90 to get a game I could play for a long time. I play often with my wife, as currently she can play without having paid the $90 so long as I had the expansions.

Couldn't you play with your wife IRL then? It's a genuine question. When I got Dominion Online I became a bit lazy and didn't want to set up the cards, so I asked my girlfriend if she wanted to play online and she gave me a "WTF"-look and pointed to the expansions on the shelf. I assumed most couples that don't spend horrendous amounts of time apart play IRL.

strong and caring hands.

Kind of makes it sound like this. Even though Penguins don't have hands. And I don't know how "strong" they are.

The one on the left is SCSN. The one on the right is Stef. The little baby penguin is Dominion Online/Offline. Obviously.

Help! / Re: What Prize to Pick?
« on: April 07, 2016, 06:05:11 pm »
Ok, I went back and grabbed the chat from this game: note that this chat is from Burning Skull's perspective, and starts as he is choosing his prize after teamrocketgrunt has already chosen followers:

Thanks for going back and grabbing the relevant chat log. It does provide some additional insight. I think Mic puts what all of you have been saying in a nutshell.

Quote
Stef_42 : yes that was a very bad discard by rocket
Stef_42 : rocket got first prize (followers)
Mic_Qsenoch : looks terrible

Much more important though, I absolutely love the abbreviation "rocket". Makes me think of this:

Help! / What Prize to Pick?
« on: April 07, 2016, 06:03:44 am »
I played this game against Burning Skull last night as part of a "let's-get-severely-torched-by-someone-plain-better-in-a-league-match" theme night I had over at my place. There were refreshments, a pinata and of course the getting severely torched.

Kingdom:

Code: [Select]
Forager, Caravan, Coppersmith, Thief, Tournament, Duke, Hunting Party, Margrave, Venture, Peddler
Log: http://gokosalvager.com/static/logprettifier.html?http://dominion-game-logs.s3.amazonaws.com/game_logs/20160406/log.0.1459969707999.txt

After the games, he was nice enough to answer my questions concerning our games, but I forgot to ask all of them. Here is one:

What Prize would you have picked in my place? I collide Tournament and Province first, but I have the weaker deck overall. At this point, Burning Skull has three HPs to my one, which - in at least one instance - is my own doing, because I deliberately choose double-Peddler (costing 2 at that point) for $6 over single HP before the reshuffle because I was worried I wouldn't have the economy to hit $8 afterwards. This was probably silly. When I collided Province+Tournament I knew I wouldn't be able to draw my Province up again and it was very likely that my opponent would pick whichever Prize I didn't. So do you get Followers or Trusty Steed in my position?

Here is another: As a result of picking Followers, my opponent got Trusty Steed. Which allowed him to grab Margraves (well, a Margrave). In the end he double-Provinced twice. Should I have gone for that as well? Is shooting for single Province a worse mistake than I think?

Last one: My overall questionable play aside, I found myself repeatedly and instinctively discarding Provinces to his Margrave which allowed my opponent to play Tournaments for +1 Card, + $1 afterwards. How do you balance the damage of keeping a dud Card in your hand vs the damage your opponent can do with that extra payload? And does HP influence your decision? Like, would you be more inclined to keep a Province in your hand with a HP there, because then your HP won't find more Provinces for you?

I might post more game reports from my theme night eventually. Until then, big thanks to my opponent for providing a great learning experience  ;D.

Game Reports / Re: Hating Rebuild
« on: April 06, 2016, 07:47:57 pm »
But then you should (and I think you really shouldn't) open Embargo-Procession at least. I tried this board a couple of times against bots and I can't help but feel that there is an elaborate Double-Tac with Proc-Proc-HG-Rebuild to be played that gains Estates and Duchies via trashing HGs and rebuilds them in the same turn while gaining back Rebuild and HG. The problem is that you run out of supplies that way, so you also need Villages to gradually be processioned into more Processions and processioned Scavengers give you an extra gain when you double-Tac. Even if this doesn't beat regular Rebuild on average, I think at the very least this would be an approved use of Rebuild, because it's actually fun and not lame.

(How do you insert such a kingdom overview picture? Or do you just take a screenshot?)

On gokosalvager.com, there's a function called "kingdom visualizer". Enter your log and copy/paste the BB Code to this thread.

Like so:

Code: [Select]
Embargo, Village, Procession, Scavenger, City, Counting House, Ghost Ship, Rebuild, Tactician, Hunting Grounds

Aww, man. I wanted to watch that. But I literally just scheduled a match for this exact time. WHAT ARE THE ODDS!?

Also, I hear this teamrocketgrunt is a pretty wacky player. So if you see him playing like an idiot, it is only for entertainment purposes. Not because he is actually an idiot. No way.

Variants and Fan Cards / Re: Joust
« on: March 30, 2016, 11:10:53 am »
1. Did you consider an Overpay-Effect for the 11th Kingdom Card ("Setup: Add an extra Kingdom card pile. You may overpay for cards from that pile. For each (1) you overpayed, gain a Joust") or did you not phrase it intentionally because you don't want players to gain more than one Joust per buy? Incidentally, you could make it a "Young Witch" Setup clause: "Setup: Add an extra Kingdom card pile costing (5) or more to the Supply. You may overpay for cards from that pile. For each (1) you overpayed, gain a Joust". I think that might balance out the overpay a bit.

2. I think you should add the "If you do" that you mentioned.

3. I think "+2 Cards, +1 buy" might be sufficient as the second choice.

Welcome to the forums!

Picking up where Seprix left off. I'm by no means a good player, but if you want, we could play some friendly games sometimes. I love rediscovering old expansions, so we could work ourselves through the cards from the Base Set and eventually throw in more cards. I don't have a super-crazy amount of spare time to spend on Dominion, but if you're interested, I'm sure we could set something up.

As far as the ferocity of the forum goes, I - as a newbie - can vouch that everyone here is really friendly. The only thing that can get you into trouble is declaring that King's Court is far more skippable than everyone thinks. And I guess you won't do that, if you have only been playing for two weeks.

Let's Discuss ... / Re: Let's Discuss Adventures Cards: Storyteller
« on: March 21, 2016, 06:11:50 pm »
I'm not sure how I feel about Storyteller yet. I played like two games with it and each time I bought a couple. It worked nicely, but since Adventures is so new and inviting you to screw around with a lot of stuff that actually diverts from winning the game, I couldn't tell, if Storyteller was good (in those kingdoms) or both players were just playing really slow decks.

I do know this. I LOVE how thematic this card is. Or better: How thematic I think it is, because I didn't read anything about its backstory and I can't be sure that DXV intended it that way. Especially when playing with lots of card from Adventures, you're telling something of a story with your cards. And as long as you're paying the Storyteller, the saga continues. Love it.

Kingdom is: Philstone, IGG, Royal Seal, Loan, Stash, Bank, Horn of Plenty, Forager and two other Cards.

11 Treasures are in the trash. You play three Foragers, giving you 4 buys and $33.

Having all 10 Foragers is irrelevant and a sneaky misdirect.

Although having him play at 8 a.m. might be considered an unfair disadvantage. Not to mention MF decided to give me two starts. And I offered him $ 1.000.000 to resign. Well, just two of the above are true. Do you take checks, singletee?  ;D

That chart is a chart of an old man's heart rate when he's about to get his spongebath with turn 7 being the moment that the nurse enters to give him the spongebath.

You should print that VP Chart, frame it, and put it on your nightstand, so you can look at it before going to sleep and first thing every morning. It looks so flawless.

Let's Discuss ... / Re: Let's Discuss Adventures EVENTS: BALL
« on: February 19, 2016, 09:50:48 pm »
Quite a lot of events give you the benefits on an existing card without having to buy that card and put it in your deck. Not having to buy a talisman seems like a good deal.

This. So much this. It's really unrelated, but I played a board today that featured Smithy and Trade. And, man, does Trade spice up Smithy (terminal draw)-BM. I didn't bother letting it actually play against Trading Post (which seems comparable to Trade) + Smithy-BM, but I presume Smithy-BM + Trade would destroy it.

I assume it's possible to calculate how much lower opportunity cost is for Events compared to Supply Cards without too much effort, but if you want a certain effect in the early game I think it's fair to just say: Events > Supply cards.

The same goes for Ball, if compared to a double four-cost gainer like Talisman. Put easily, buying Ball costs skipping a fiver and lowering economy for the next turn. Talisman could have been a Silver which means Talisman will lower your economy for every future shuffle. You'd better have long term plans for Talisman, then.
Ball is a one shot unlike talisman though. You don't buy a talisman for one use.

That is - although put more concisely - part of what I am saying. At least, I meant to say that. Talisman, when compared to Ball, has to be justified by a long-term investment. Ball is less demanding.
