Dominion General Discussion / Re: how many travellers do you buy?
« on: June 02, 2016, 06:43:40 pm »
I think the more interesting question is when is the answer 0.  I always want to buy them, because... doing stuff is fun.  But it might take too long to be useful on some boards.

The only times I recall skipping them is when there is some really strong combo (Hermit/Market Square for instance) that just doesn't care about either Traveller lines at all. At least, those are the most obvious instances.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: What's the card your best at?
« on: June 02, 2016, 10:23:50 am »
Are there any statistics easily available for this for someone like me who has only been around for Making Fun?

My guess would be Beggar. I seem to win most of the time when I buy that card, which I also believe I do significantly more often than most other people.

Other cards I suspect I do well with: Urchin, Ill-Gotten Gains, Explorer

Cards I suspect I do poorly with: Bishop, Tunnel, Market Square, Highway

I am very bad at determining when gaining Gold in a weird way via Tunnel or Market Square is good.

Goko Dominion Online / Re: VP Counters and Resignations
« on: June 01, 2016, 04:48:47 pm »
I don't think resignations are unfun at all. Really premature resignations (e.g. turn 4) are a bit silly, but otherwise,  I find resignations every now and then from my opponent is much more fun than no resignations at all. Playing out that 1-province-per-turn Scrying Pool engine for 5 turns isn't that interesting.

If the "Play All Treasures" Button does not actually play all your treasures, I think it should say so on the button very clearly. Maybe some type of color change or something. This was quite annoying: http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?topic=15565.0

Alternatively there could actually be a "Play All Treasures Button" with a cautious Treasures button in the normal place, but this one somewhere else. Sometimes I just want to play all my treasures including all alternate treasures.

Another solution I see for this would be to require the player to click on a Begin Buying button before starting to buy anything. This would also prevent stuff like that example you noted in the other thread about Swindling the opponent's Estate, as well as cases of buying Borrow before playing your treasures.

I think the simpler solution is to have the '+' button on swindler be a different color than the '+' button when you gain cards yourself. In fact you could have a different color for gaining, buying, and sending cards to your opponent. (not sure how many other mechanics I'm missing that are unique here, so there may not be enough colors for all of them).

There's also Contraband, Embargo, placing tokens (Teacher, Pathfinding, Seaway, Lost Arts, Training, Ferry, Plan), Inheritance and probably more.

Mint and Taxman are also optional.

Additionally, you can also Prince all of those cards yourself, then Possess your opponent and play their Possession, forcing them to gain Golds using your deck!

What are all the ways your opponent can force you to gain a Gold? There are currently 9 answers I have.
The obvious ones are:

Ambassador
Messenger (involves cost reduction)
Jester
Masquerade (not technically gain, whatever)
Swindler

Other than that, I don't know. There are some convoluted ways an opponent can force you to gain Gold assuming you have certain cards in your deck. For example, trash their Sir Vander with a trashing attack. Another method that works is to play Possession, and set aside Bag of Gold, Soothsayer or Noble Brigand with Prince, forcing them to gain Golds during their turn. Well I guess that's 9.

Edit: although that begs the question, do the existing rules for the overpay mechanic allow the use of potions? It wouldn't do anything, but just as something interesting if this were to become a thing.

You can gain Potion-cost cards with Stonemason by overpaying with Potion (e.g. buy Stonemason, overpay with Potion, gain 2 Transmutes).

Designed kingdoms, where all the boards are with Embassy and a variety of weak terminals.

Variants and Fan Cards / Re: Restricting cards in Black Market
« on: May 23, 2016, 03:37:17 pm »
The ones that I'm mainly interested in banning would be Page, Fool's Gold and Treasure Map, as they're essentially pointless. I don't really have a big problem with any other cards. Sometimes Chapel or Mountebank or whatever can be really good to get out of the Black Market deck, but I find that a single black market card being game-winning is actually extremely rare.

« on: May 23, 2016, 02:25:35 pm »
Something pretty neat about Procession is that it makes all sorts of weak action cards desirable. Suddenly Navigator, Chancellor, Harvest etc. are something you'll eventually Procession into, or something you can Procession into something better. I enjoy the card because it's one of those that often allows the entire kingdom to see play.

Coin of the Realm and Ratcatcher

Pretty weak on its own, but I think stronger in the presence of other attacks. If you can combine it with a bit of cursing and a handsize attack, that makes kicking off much harder for your opponent.

I feel like a lot of the new Dominion expansions are improving Diadem somewhat. Champion is really helpful, and I think Bustling Village might help too.

Storyteller too is a combo with Diadem.

43
With Scheme or something else that you want en masse anyway as the Bane, Sea Hag is probably a bit stronger.

Scheme is a bad example, since you can just keep on topdecking the Scheme to permanently counter Young Witch. Maybe something like Village or Warehouse is a better example.

44
It's also an excellent pile for tokens.

This.  I've never played it, but I think opening Port/Peasant and then hammering Ports would be really strong.  How many other cantrips let you get 8 copies even if your opponent interferes?

"Really strong" is an overstatement. Your opponent who buys a trasher first and gets to Teacher much earlier is gonna be in much better shape. And besides, you can only stick 1 token on Port, so it's not like Teacher-Port is much of a strategy by itself.

45
For the first time in very long, my rating has dipped under 4000. I blame the constant crashing.

Could someone do a simulation of how long, on average, does it take a Page to become a Champion, in the absence of any other cards?  So no thinning, sifting, draw, or anything that would otherwise speed up (or slow down) the exchanging.  That would be cool to know.  I wonder how it would compare to other straight-X strategies (Jack, Wharf, etc.).

It's probably still too early to tell, but my hypothesis is that Page is pretty weak when you have absolutely no other support to speed up the exchanging.
Page bm upgrading to hero/treasure hunter seems ok for bm.

I just doubt that there are many boards where Page is around and BM is still the best option.
Any board without draw or trashing

If there's Page, there's draw.

Warrior is a lab that causes you to gain at least one Silver when gaining it. It doesn't actually help you draw your deck.

Desktop or push notifications, such as those Steam or Lichess.org use. When the Dominion client is minimized, I still want to be notified if someone challenges me to a game or if it's my turn. Currently, you have to periodically check back on the client if you want to be notified of it, which means that many times people have sent me challenges that I haven't responded to.

but, for the other reasons that dominion is fun, tournament is sehr gut. your newbie friend asks if there's a card that rewards you for having provinces and you say "no, there tends to not be things that.. oh wait, yeah there is, it's tournament."

When your friend asks this, you could also respond Explorer.

Next person to complain about some nitpicky aspect of Dominion should be sentenced to play a few 4-hour-long games of 6-player Catan with all the expansions.

All the expansions? Do you have any idea how many obscure variants there are? That's going to take a lot more than 4 hours when you take into account all the obscure but official variants like Hot Air Balloons, Factories, Specialists, Catan Rally, Dragonslayers, Magic Castle, Oil Springs, Atlantis, Football Fields, Catan is Round, Chocolate Market and many more... All of these are real by the way.

Just had a forced win that could only be achieved by trashing 2 Provinces to a Mercenary.
