Dominion Isotropic / Re: Dark Ages on Iso a Possibility?
« on: September 07, 2012, 12:01:28 pm »

I suppose. I still can't see how someone can lose interest in the game itself. The game doesn't change--just the medium. I've heard of people using chips instead of cards. It's different, and I probably wouldn't like it. It still wouldn't make me lose interest in the game.

I can see where you're coming from; I just can't wrap my brain around the idea of claiming to enjoy the game only as long as it's on Isotropic. It sounds like hyperbole to me, but I'll accept that such a thing is possible.

Hey look, I'm taking away your pinball machine. But I'll give you the cardgame version of it. You can do all the same things with all the same rules, you just need your whole living room floor to do it and calculate the physics yourself and it happens at 1/10,000th the speed. What are you complaining about? Implementation doesn't matter.

I take it you've never played Solitaire with real cards, then.

I have, and it's awful.  But it doesn't really have a social aspect, now does it?

Ironmonger, despite being in DA, is ever so slightly worse with Shelters than with Estates.

Is Guido Teuber wearing a shirt saying "University of Catan"?

That's me, and yes. They gave us all those polos before the final game. The website it pretty bizarre: http://www.universityofcatan.com/

Congrats on the big win!

By the way, how fast do you all type?  http://www.typeracer.com

I get about 60-70 wpm on tests like that one.  When I'm extemporizing, I can get up to 90-100.  Such is the problem of not learning touch-typing.

You have to understand though that Holland is a very western and international oriented country so even our average Joes will be able to speak some English words. We get movies and TV series in English and put Dutch subtitles under them.

This is true not just of the Netherlands but also of most of Europe, as I understand it.  Some countries are better about being willing to converse in English than others, but almost everyone, in Northern Europe especially, knows English.  Here in the US, of course, learning a foreign language is uncommon even among the highly educated.  I'm ashamed to admit I've forgotten 90% of the German I learned in high school, and haven't tried to learn another language, or keep up with the German, in the ~19 years since I last took a language course.  That said, I love linguistics.  Therefore:

The more we go to the east, the harder it gets for us, but that's because we can't track back words anymore.

A word like 'beer' in other languages:
Dutch: bier
French: bière
German: bier
Russian: пиво

Eh, it's a loanword in French though.  French is no closer to Dutch and German than either of those are to Russian or Serbian.

And then of course there's the wacky Finns/Hungarians/Turks.

I find the differing opinions on Nitrogen vs. Sodium quite interesting, given how similar they are. :P

Gaaaaah you people don't understand how difficult it is to read sentences like this without my brain exploding!

The board in that picture has some sides of length four and the others length three. Is that an expansion or variant? I've always played with a regular 3 length hexagon..

Expansion.  That's the setup for 5-6 players.  You can also see the brown pieces used by a 5th/6th player.

Also, I think MTG and possibly other TCGs with strong followings probably have dedicated forums.

Wow, how much strategy is there to Settlers?  I'll go check that out later.

(For the record, I find Settlers distasteful but have helped Mayfair run Setters tournaments at Origins and GenCon)

As I understand it, there are two levels of Settlers strategy.  The first level is fairly basic.  Certain numbers are better than others, which means certain intersections will be better than others.  If you don't diversify numbers and resources, you're going to be screwed unless you get extremely lucky.  Resources that are better in the early game (Clay, Wood) may not be great in the endgame (Ore, Wheat).

The second level of strategy, however, is entirely political, which means it's something Dominion completely lacks.  This strategy involves who to trade with, when, and how much.  It involves determining whether a given trade is advantageous.  It also involves who to hit with the robber and when.  For both of these, you have to be counting cards accurately, and in order to play at the tournament level, well, you have to be willing to make enemies.

I'm sure other games have their own dedicated forums, which would be better than what's posted on BGG.

Chess.  Probably Go.  I can only imagine Bridge might.  Very few games have a rabidly dedicated strategic following.  Certainly among Eurogames, only Dominion and Settlers do.

Rules Questions / Re: Counterfeit + Talisman
« on: September 05, 2012, 02:29:35 pm »
A pound of feathers is likely expressed in avoirdupois making it 16 ounces or 453.6 grams.

A pound of silver is likely expressed in troy making it 12 troy ounces or 373.24 grams.

If these are the conventions being used then the pound of feathers is heavier.

You win a cookie sir!!

Trick question:  which is heavier, a pound of feathers, or a pound of silver (i.e. a pound sterling)?

Would have made a bit better if you didn't announce it was a trick question beforehand....

But what's the answer?

Quote
Also, a pound sterling is not the same as a pound of silver.....Pound Sterling is the name for the a currency, therefore it has no weight. Whereas a pound of silver is a weight of silver (of which none is present in British coins I believe)

OK, yes, I was using historical (and, yes, ancient historical) definitions in which 1 pound of currency was 1 pound of silver.

6914
What's important is recognizing that this Silver is strictly superior to the regular Silver.

Hey, at least what elements are there are in order.  I had to skip some, though, because some names are more cumbersome to use in conversation than others.  Also, there are elements like Copper, Silver, Gold, and Platinum.  I already jokingly used Silver as a pseudonym for the other challenge (Patricia Wentworth's detective Miss Maud Silver), so no sense doing that here as well.

Scandium, Vanadium, Germanium, and Selenium are crying right now.  Look what you've done, making them cry!  You monster.

(On the other hand, Copper don't care; Copper don't give a shit.)

Roll Through The Ages?  Dice, sturdy wood blocks, and paper.  And a reasonably good game.

6919
As far as the Hermit question is concerned, clean-up happens in whatever order you like. That is, you actually discard each card one after the other, choosing them as you go.

This part is incorrect.  The cards are discarded all at once; you can choose which goes on top:  http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?topic=1004.msg15441#msg15441

However, I don't know if there is a standard for whether cards in front of you are cleaned up first, or cards in your hand are cleaned up first.

Apprentice/Feodum

I've always love Apprentice, I mean it is just such a hands down fantastic card. But anyway this combo is a like the love child of Apprentice and Trader. So much fun.

I think Apprentice loves Dark Ages in general.  Trash a Rats for 5 cards.  Trash a Cultist for 8 cards.  Trash a Fortress, draw 4 cards and put the Fortress back in hand to fuel action chains.  Trash a Squire for 2 cards and an attack card.  Trash Gold for 6 cards, then use Graverobber to put it back on your deck, or just Rogue to gain it back.  The possibilities are crazy.
