As some on the forums know, I just moved to DC from Detroit. As such, I've never in my life paid attention to hurricanes. Now everyone here is panicking. Don't these things just, like, hit Miami or something? I have no idea why everybody is so scared, or what's about to happen.

Amusingly, I think Detroit is getting worse weather from this than DC did, because of the conglomeration with the cold front coming down from Canadia.  Here in Toledo we have 35 mph winds and somewhat heavy rain.  Nothing like what they have in NYC, but we have a better chance of power outages than DC.

(This is because the southwest side of a hurricane (which hit NOVA) is the least powerful, and the northeast side (hitting NYC/NJ/CT) is most powerful.

Stay safe, East coasters.

While this isn't worse than banning people from tournaments for expressing their opinions in unrelated threads, it's still pretty weird.

:p

6753
Instead of editing, I'll go ahead and put up a second post, especially since I can now type instead of writing from by phone between games.

Rounds 1 and 2 I got purely outplayed, more in 1 than in 2.  Round 3 was, as I noted, a matter of going first in the same card set (a part of the competition that I thought was problematic anyway).  The FV/Wharf game was not purely luck, but pretty close; the score was 31-29-28-28.  Round 5 was an interesting game, but I still think it's bad form in a tournament when the player who is far behind ends the game because (verbally expressed) he didn't want it to go on any longer.

Anyway, I barely made it into the semis, seeded 9th of 9.

Semifinals:  Tunnel with Cartographer, Margrave, Grand Market and Oasis.  Also on board: WV and Jack, and a couple other unimportant cards.  This was a great setup for Tunnel, especially with Margrave as the only drawer: anyone playing Margrave risked giving their opponents Gold.  Jack opening to load up on Silver, Tunnel/Cartographer to load up on Gold, WV/Margrave/GM to load up on Provinces and extra Tunnels.  I won in a squeaker against the #3 seed, by I think 4 points; it could have gone either way.

Finals:  Familiar and Moat.  Little more needs to be said, as even seat position doesn't play too much of a role when it's merely a question of whether your Familiars are blocked, and whether you have Moat in hand at the right times.  Apprentice and Spy helped out here, and the winner actually took it using Transmute to change Estates into Gold.  If he'd gotten more Curses, that wouldn't have been likely for him, but then's the breaks at times.  Congrats and good luck to him at nationals!

6754
Round 1: $4 on T3, $4 on T4, Militia on T5.  From the last seat. I failed to contest Conspirators, thinking Remodel wouldn't trash efficiently enough.  I was, if course, wrong.  Second place.

Round 2: Mining Village, Bridge, Goons, Peddler, 2nd position.  Grabbed Goons on T4, didn't show up until 7.  A single double Goons turn couldn't make up for the fast three-pile by the winner with a Peddler stack.

Playing poorly today.

Round 3:  playing the same cards in the next round, from position 1, is OP.  Like Scout.

Round 4: FV/Wharf... from fourth position.  That was gonna be a loss.

Round 5: Hamlet, Menagerie, HP... perfect storm but trying in person because of all the revealing, discarding, shuffling.  Second place thanks to kingmaking.

Barely in the semis.

Mine is a random fantasy-sounding name I used for a D&D character way back, then transferred the name to a WOW character and have been using since then.

I'm hoping that Goko becomes aware of this thread and it influences them to improve the multiplayer on their site.
Currently Goko reports that 5% of played games have 2 or more humans. Five percent, that is not a typo. Obv. making games with multiple humans work better will increase that number, but it's still a significant factor in just how high of a priority this stuff should end up. Better meeting room / matchmaking still made Ted's latest top 7 things list - call it top 8 since Jay is pushing for a German version, which wasn't on the list.

I think that's mixing cause with effect.  No one plays multiplayer because it takes a long time to find a game and there's no matchmaking.  Playing vs. computer is quick and simple.  Want to play multiplayer?  Go to Iso, as long as it exists, because it is still better than Goko at multiplayer.

I don't know about solo play as guest, but i've definitely done it as logged in user... accidentally hitting play before putting a bot in.

Ohh. well solo play I've tried today and it doesn't work anymore.

Confirmed.  Can't play a 1-player game any more.  They're really breaking new ground here.

So - goko has a bunch of things that Iso doesn't

1. Official Art
2. Music
3. Animations
4. Artificial Intelligence
5. Single Player (its still there - even for guests - you can choose 2,3, or 4 players - but not 5 or 6)
6. Cool 3d avatars
7. A casual leaderboard for people who want to constrain their cards
8. Rewards for playing with your google account.  Iso gives you no such bonus.
9. Adventure mode
10. Far fewer people in lobby - so you don't have to worry about chat spam.

Heh, nice CF.  Now get your tongue out of your cheek. :p

General Discussion / Re: Conlanging
« on: October 25, 2012, 09:12:11 am »
You've got seemingly unpronouncable combinations of letters (Z followed immediately by R).

Conlanging is--mostly--done in the context of worldbuilding/storytelling.  Otherwise it is, as you imply, less than useful, though it can be an amusing linguistic exercise.

That said, I imagine our resident Serbian would tell you that the consonant cluster "zr" is perfectly pronounceable.  The similar cluster "vr" shows up in both Serbian and Romanian.  And I'm sure other languages have them too.

When we say "unpronounceable" it's important to remember that there are languages that use things like alveolar and palatal clicks as consonants.  Human phonology is much broader than just English phonology.

Super Coppersmith
$5
+1 Card
+1 Action
Each pair of Coppers played this turn produces an extra $1.

I might actually buy this version.

Crappy Festival
$4
+2 Actions
+$4
+2 Buys
Discard two cards.

This is so much better than Horse Traders it's not even funny.

Crappy Highway
$4
When this is in play, cards cost $2 less, but not less than $0.

Worse than Princess.  Better than Bridge? Hard to say.

Crappy Apprentice
$4
Discard a card.
Trash a card.  +2 cards for every $1 in the cost of the trashed card.

Probably not that crappy.

Crappy Bandit Camp
$4
+2 Actions
Gain two Spoils from the Spoils pile.

YES PLEASE.

Also, have to disagree with you on Hunting Party:

Crappy Hunting Party
$4
Reveal your hand.
Do this twice: Reveal cards from your deck until you reveal a card that isn't a duplicate of one in your hand.  Put it into your hand and discard the rest.

With other +Actions, a +2 Card sifter is plenty powerful.

Dominion Strategy Wiki Feedback / Re: Dominion Wiki

Seems nice except for the giant ad banner.  Mine is a Romney / Ryan ad.  Is that an official sponsorship - or is it taking into account the amount of money I waste on board games and think that I'm 1%?

Actually, it thinks you're the 1% based on your upvotes vs. posts here.

(Actually actually, it's probably just a random banner ad via an ad service.)

Also, I'll put in another vote for MediaWiki.  Very easy to use and should be simple to install.

General Discussion / Re: Favorite Webcomics
« on: October 21, 2012, 06:04:28 pm »
Oh man, my list of webcomics used to be huge, but it's dwindled over the decades (three of them now, though obviously not 30 years).  I still read:

xkcd
SMBC
Schlock Mercenary (surprised not to see this listed by anyone yet!)
PVP
Penny Arcade
Questionable Content

And used to read:

Sluggy Freelance (I stopped at the yet-another-alternate-universe thing a couple years ago.  Cerebus syndrome without the plotlines to back it up.)
Girl Genius
Dr. McNinja
User Friendly
Least I Could Do
Something Positive
Two Lumps

Plus some defunct comics:

Miracle of Science (still online but story ended)
It's Walky! (still online but story ended)
Queen of Wands (still online but story ended)
Acid Reflux
Repository of Dangerous Things
Catharsis

...and others that I've probably simply forgotten.

Why anyone looked past Civ is mystifying....with the possible exception of Pirates!

Sid Meier owned my childhood.....

I never got the chance to play it, but I understand a large population feels Meier's Alpha Centauri blew Civ out of the water.

Nanometal fluorescence imaging in cells.  Kinda cool, I like it.  (I used to work down the street from you in Nat Sci, assuming the Chem Dept there is still in CC Little.)

Some more Time Travels for you

Bill and Ted!
Star Trek IV
Star Trek First Contact

Also, the Philadelphia Experiment, which I always get mixed up with Philadelphia, thats caused some uncomfortable situations I can tell you!

My favorite time travel stories (Connie Willis) will, alas, never see the screen, because they're more like the length of Game of Thrones.

Another one who's never seen Godfather.  And I really can't remember the last time I had time to watch a movie when I wasn't on vacation (and therefore had little interest in watching movies).

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Hoard in Colony games
« on: October 16, 2012, 11:07:40 am »
A Gold gained along with a green card is, from a cash perspective, the same as buying a Copper and a Silver.

If you expect to green early, Hoard is great, but that's not going to happen in Colony games.  Exception:  Duchy/Duke can beat Colonies and Hoard works well with them.

Game Reports / Re: Tactician / Remodel / Treasure Map
« on: October 11, 2012, 11:26:14 pm »
I agree that WH/TMap is good, but turn 5 is the 2nd-earliest possible hit (with the best being turn 4, which happens basically never). It's not crazy luck, but it's an above-average draw.

I dunno... the T4 hit should happen with a 20% chance any time you draw WH on T4 and had $4 and no TM on T3.  So T4 is probably near a 4% chance.  T5 is probably ~20-25%.

* Every card placing 2nd in a challenge is included in the ballot below if its author does not already have MULTIPLE winning cards in the set.  Most 2nd-place cards got included this way, but a couple did not.

* Every card placing 3rd in a challenge is included in the ballot below if its author does not already have ANY winning cards in the set.  The majority of 3rd-place cards got included this way, but several did not.

I'm interested to know who/what was in this group!  There are four of us with multiple cards (eHalcyon, Polk, Greystripe and myself).

I think its going to be worse with goko IMHO.  More casual audience + more interface lag.

They will probably deal with it if it becomes a problem, but I predict that the answer to your question is something like.

"@ Goko, we recognize that this is a potential issue, but right now we're focused on other items.  We'll keep an eye on this in the future, thank you for bringing it to our attention.

Now you mention it i have heard that line being trotted out once or twice before....

Pretty sure it's been a lot more than once or twice.

Introductions / Hello, and mostly Goodbye
« on: October 03, 2012, 09:53:00 pm »
I always kind of planned to create an introduction post, given the amount that I post, but I was never quite sure when or how to do it.  So I guess I'll go with this:

Hi.  I'm Kirian, and I live in Ohio.  I've played Dominion since about 3 months after it came out, own all the expansions except Dark Ages, and have them all neatly packaged in a pair of containers so they all fit.  I also play a ton of other Eurogames, as well as WOW and D&D (I'm one of the approximately 5 people who liked 4e).  In my non-gaming time, I've been variously a teacher, a biochemist, a writer, a web designer and web programmer, and a father to two.

I was drawn to Dominion for its simplicity and replayability, and I was drawn to DS.com and then these forums by the great discussion of those strategies.  I'm probably responsible for more than a dozen sales of Dominion and its expansions.  That said, I feel that online Dominion is superior to its offline version--though I'm certain we can find cases that make it not strictly superior.

----

But, alas, this is (mostly) goodbye as well.

I haven't been playing on Iso as much lately, partly because of the Goko mess, partly through having less time because of other projects.  The Goko thing has been an ongoing annoyance of mine since before it was even Goko, and I always worried that the new system wouldn't be as good as Iso.  But I had hope, as some of my dealbreakers were getting fixed.

The Goko Q&A today pretty much solidified my opinion.  There are other major problems, but the Walled Village/Google+ thing actually is a huge one.  It may seem minor, but it implies future creep of sponsorship and monetization, maybe not of Dominion cards but almost certainly of other games.  The lack of substantive response on key issues saddens and amuses me; there's at least one future politician in training at Goko, somewhere.  That lack of substance--the continued essential "Yes, we hear you, but no, we probably aren't going to do anything about it"--is the final straw for me.

Prehaps Goko will get their act together.  I'm sure they'll put something together.  I estimate the Goko Dominion community will pull perhaps 20% of Isotropic's traffic at their peak, and that will wane after a short while.  I'll be surprised if, a year from now, Goko Dominion has even 10% of Isotropic's current traffic.  Too many prominent community members have all but said they aren't moving unless these same issues are cleared up.

Donald, you created an amazing game.  I'm truly sorry that your publisher screwed the pooch on this, and then made you the messenger.

----

In the meantime, until Goko cleans things up or goes belly-up, I won't be buying from companies that have licensed to Goko, including RGG, Mayfair, Knizia, and Gopherwood, as well as whoever else gets announced as having licensed to Goko.

I'll play on Iso occasionally in the meantime, and for those in the SE Michigan area I'll be at U-Con; feel free to contact me via PM if you like.  I'll probably even still jump in on the tournament there.

But I won't be here on the forum as much, and I won't be seeing you all on Goko.  Perhaps someday.
