Other Games / Re: Game rules and their depth
« on: January 04, 2013, 10:01:24 am »
Depending on how you define depth, chess is not as deep as Dominion.

I know several people who believe Go to be a deeper game because chess is so much more easily conquered by AI

Relevant:

That said, I agree that Dominion is a deeper game than Innovation, partially because of the available cards, and partially because of the (usually) smaller decision tree in Innovation.

"I have had it with these monkey-fighting snakes on this Monday-to-Friday plane!" -Samuel Jackson

This was the actual TV version of the line.

Dear god.
I'm surprised Samuel L didn't grab Tarantino, go to the studio, and just f**k every foley editor's s**t up over that one.

I'd love to see how they deal with Blazing Saddles on network television.

Well-timed chimes on a large bell?  Seems obvious.

"KHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANNNNN!!"

That's perhaps my least favorite line in the movie.  It really adds nothing, or very little, and it's atypical of Kirk, who's been taunting Khan all along the way.

My favorite censorship of all time... For those of you Big Lebowski fans (I know at least Davio is!), you should all know the line "This is what happens when you fuck a stranger in the ass!"

When I saw the movie on Comedy Central?

"This is what happens when you find a stranger in the alps!"

I think that's a lot of people's favorite censorship of all time.

Depending on the type of cookie, you should either soften or melt the butter before adding the sugar and egg.  That will give a better consistency and make them a bit fluffier.

Bad chemistry pun on top of bad chemistry pun.

Egyptian -> Egypt ion -> ion is a (highly) charged entity

Oh wow, that's terrible. :)

And I remembered because I was the one that made them!  Finding them was a matter of scrolling through the first few pages of the thread... I knew I'd posted them way, way early on.

"Anybody else wanna negotiate?"

"I never took the Koabyashi Maru test... until now.  What do you think... of my solution?"

Theory reminded me of another good one:  "There's a shortage of perfect breasts in this world; it would be a pity to damage yours."

Or, frankly, any quote at all from Princess Bride.

One suggestion I have: display which way the piles are splayed, if any. Sometimes it is not immediately obvious, especially if the tucked cards have no symbols revealed by the splay.

Also, it still doesn't work on FF 9.0.1, so I had to use IE instead.  I'm sure it works on Chrome at home, but what's the point of Isotropic if you can't play it at work?  :D

There actually is a display, a little left/right/up arrow on the top card.

Also... 9.0.1???  How far behind is your workplace?

Think about it this way: would you get a copy of StarCraft: The Board Game free because you bought StarCraft 2?

From all I've heard about it, I think they'd have to pay me to take a copy of that out of their inventory.

Feature suggestion: Add a warning for when you're going to be activating a dogma that your opponent has a higher score in (a demand that will fail or dogma that will be shared). It could work just like entering the buy phase with unused actions, buying something with unused treasures, and the resign button.

I don't think this is a good idea. Using Dogmas that will be shared is often a good move. Demands that do nothing, possibly, and Dogmas that will do nothing for you, probably.

Sure, it can be a good move, but it's useful to know that it's going to be shared and/or if the demand will fail.

Finding dogmas that will do nothing for you, though, is going to be almost impossible to program.  Just like Iso Dominion doesn't tell you not to play a ninth Highway in a Province game when your deck is empty.  (Go ahead, find me an edge case.)

Heh, the most funny censor was on MtG Gatherer site. It was very strict, and would censor even if a swear word is in another word. But the fun part was that there were actual MtG card names, that were censored, like "City of Brass" :D

That must have had you all taking about the City of Bras.

They've also, later, made a Joke Card:

(It's not legal or anything, it's from a joke set).

"Comes into play tapped."  Brilliant.

Rules Questions / Re: Another Procession/Duration question
« on: January 02, 2013, 09:37:25 am »
I play Procession, then on the procession play a second procession. Then I play let's say two Caravans. What stays in play until the next turn? Nothing, or the first Procession? Obviously, I'll be drawing a card four times at the start of the next turn regardless.

From my understanding of the rules, the only cards that stay in play are durations themselves, and the cards that modify them directly, i.e. not the first Procession. But then I know the reason modifying cards stay out is to show you that they're doing something and to remind you. I would guess that the hard rules trump this, but, I'm not 100% certain right now.
Nothing stays out, via the hard rules. For a brief time I ruled that Thrones that Throned Thrones that Throned duration cards stayed out, but I abandoned that in favor of following the rulebook as closely as possible.

Wait, why wouldn't the second Procession stay out? It was used to play/modify a Duration card, so wouldn't it stay out the same as a Throne Room?

That appears to be what the rulebook states:

Quote from: Dark Ages Rulebook
If you use Procession on a Duration card (from Seaside), Procession will stay out until your next turn and the Duration card will have its effect twice on your next turn, even though the Duration card is trashed.

Yeah, the Blizzard forums had that problem with the word "Drape" for quite a while, which was amusing given how many pieces of equipment were the "Drape of Foo."

Before I go and read the rules, I always heard that it is very luck dependant.
Can someone say something about that? Is it a game which you are able to play competitively?
And if yes, dougz, will you implement a leaderboard?

The cards are reasonably well-balanced, but as every card is different there's definitely a significant luck aspect.  Nonetheless, the choice of what actions to use when ends up being based not just on your hand and board, but the cards your opponent has in play, the cards in their hands, the cards they've scored, etc.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: If Dominion...Didn't...Exist...
« on: January 01, 2013, 06:14:23 pm »
The reason I prefer Dominion is because that's what I was introduced to at the time. If I would have been introduced to Thunderstone or another similar game I might have been a fanboy of one of them and I would be posting this on thunderstonestrategy.com.

I don't believe Thunderstone would exist without Dominion.
Well, if Dominion wasn't developed, I believe another deckbuilder would have to take its place. Someone else would have gone: How can we make Magic better for people who don't want to spend gazillions of money (and still end up doing so with all expansions)?

Certainly, though it's difficult to predict true innovation in game mechanics, much like true innovation in science.  I mean, it took ~10 years of Eurogaming being popular in the US before someone said what Donald X. said.  Sure, someone eventually would have come up with it, much like someone eventually would have come up with special and general relativity.  But when?

6596
I still feel the Goko level should be taken into account as well.

I disagree.  Goko level is poorly defined, based on at most a few hundred games (and that's probably only a very few people), and only tags a small fraction of players (there are very few top-tier players on Goko).

"Well, I gotta crap. Hopefully we can continue this later."

Doesn't sound that bad to me.

Ha, nice. It was a six-letter word, though.

At first I thought it was censored because of its connection to bodily processes, but after consulting Urban Dictionary, I discovered it can also be used as a term for a certain ethnic demographic. I feel a bit like Randal in Clerks II, although I'm guessing my usage of the term is still perfectly acceptable in mixed company.

EDIT: Ah, I might as well give it away before people start guessing off-color things. The censored word was 'boogie'.

I'm pretty certain multiple meanings of that word are acceptable in mixed company.  For instance:

...but I want to be ahead in the "get tunnels and then discard them" race, and I want to pick up my terminal draw right away while I still have a good opportunity. I'm planning on Warehouses and Cellars to discard the Tunnels, and those decrease hand size.

Warehouse/Smithy, then.  That (or Cellar) also helps cycle your first couple of Tunnel pickups into your deck so you can start discarding them.  Still, FV is so much more powerful that you can't ignore it early.
