Keep in mind that Ghost can only be played once every 2 turns if you're drawing your deck. I still think it's way better than Golem, though.

Poor opponent... :(

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Question- What is an Engine
« on: July 28, 2018, 08:41:53 pm »
The idea is that you get super far ahead and then you can empty the piles yourself. In practice, whenever you pull it off and your opponent can't do anything better, they just concede.

Wouldn't the optimal play for your opponent be to make the same golden deck and gain the same number of VPs a turn? Even though you're ahead, neither player can empty the piles with a win, so it's a stalemate.

It's a quick way to get payload if you have a few extra coin and +buys, but I agree that people get it too much, especially at the beginning. I think that opening double Fool's Gold is rarely a good idea, since if they don't collide, you've basically opened with 2 Coppers.

But it also has some of the strongest cards in the game - (...) Mountebank.

No doubt Mountebank is strong, but I hate it. Seeing that ugly image on the randomized board immediately lets me know that it's going to be a long, painful game.

If someone can play faster than you, great for them. But that's their concern, not yours.

I'm happy to wait as long as my opponent wants if they're staring at the board at the beginning, or if they're trying to calculate a pileout. But it kind of annoys me when they play a Hero and take 30 seconds to decide that they want a Gold when there's no alt-treasure (edit- or Platinum) :P

Could we please drop the subject? We've got enough flame wars already.

I once lost a game where my opponent put Lost Arts on Horse Traders and used Menagerie to draw back the discarded cards. It wasn't a terrific engine, but it was better than my money-ish deck.

That example might be kind of rare, but if there's trashing, a village (or "splitter" as some like to say), and good terminal payload, I think that an engine is perfectly feasible. For instance, if you have Chapel, Village, and Swindler in a game, I think that it's worthwhile to trash down and play a bunch of Swindlers per turn.

Game Reports / Re: Dear My Opponent: I am Sorry
« on: June 23, 2018, 01:18:54 pm »
I opened 3/4 while my opponent opened 5/2 on a Mountebank board. He wins the Curse split, but then he plays big money and greens way too early, while I clean up with Lookout and make an engine with KC and Catacombs. This is the chat from the game:

La-Ya:  hi
La-Ya:  glhf!
Opponent:  you too
La-Ya:  ugh [this in response to my opponent's Mountebank opening]
Opponent:  how do you draw tht
Opponent:  every turn
Opponent:  its pretty sickening how lucky you are
Opponent:  banned and blacklisted

Base cards in general play the second fiddle. It's not different for Duchy and Estate, and even Province often stands back behind kingdom cards. That's natural, design-wise, as it ensures the variable supply has a meaningful effect on the game.

The idea that treasures in general, or even the base treasures in general, were poisonous garbage you may not ever include in your deck, is hyperbole spread by people who want to suggest that their experience from 2P games could be applied to Dominion in general. Either because they don't bother thinking about multiplayer at all, or in Awaclus' case, because they are disdainful towards playing preferences other than their own.

My experience is that in games with many players, the Provinces run out too quickly for an engine to get started. If one player goes for the engine and the other 5 go for big money, the engine would have to be absurdly fast in order to actually win the game. Some people might not mind that, and one could argue that that's not better or worse, just different. I personally prefer for it to get around to my turn quickly, and to not have my engine be beaten by many opponents playing Smithy big money, so I like 2 player more. I understand how others may feel differently, though.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Favorite/least favorite Landmarks?
« on: June 04, 2018, 03:10:25 pm »
I like almost all of the Landmarks. They're a simple and elegant idea, and they change the way people play the game without messing with the mechanics almost at all. There are a few I don't like however:

Arena: almost never are you faced with an actually tough decision of whether to play an Action or discard it for 2 VP. Usually, one player will win the split 8-4 just because of luck.

Orchard/Museum/Keep: All neat ideas, but they take brainpower to remember how much of stuff you have, which is brainpower you aren't spending on analyzing the board. I guess it's good to keep track of what you have in any game, regardless of landmarks, but I'm just lazy.

Envoy + Cemetary: get a big hand with Envoy, then trash stuff. It helps that your opponent will want to let you keep the bad cards when you play Envoy, which you then trash.

Dominion General Discussion / Trashing the Engineer

When do you do it? Besides "depends on the board," do you think it's a good idea in general to get the extra early tempo from having two 4-cost cards in your deck, or build a bit more long-term and have one Engineer and one 4-cost?

The wording is so much clearer in 2nd edition, much more beginner friendly. Also, it might not matter if new players play with things like Woodcutter, but it might take them a while to realize that Thief sucks if they start playing with it.

Whenever there's a junker on the board, I will over-buy it to excess and build a deck around playing them as quickly as possible. Less because I think cursing itself is good, but more because I hate dealing with deck junking. After all, you don't have to worry about curses if you opponent has all 10 of them.

(Oh, and if there is rats + any trash-for-benefit on the board, I will buy rats. There is no exceptions to this rule. Anybody who forgoes rats in a set where rats can be used will be silently but sternly disapproved of. Cowards.)

Isn't that just what you do? I think of giving an opponent a junk card as the same as trashing one of their Labs, so Witch is sort of like Sir Destry but it always hits a Lab.

Lol, just a disclaimer: my friends are actually pretty nice, they just can't stand losing at Dominion.

I was playing an IRL 4-player game about 2 years ago. I don't remember the exact details, but I calculated my chances of getting as unlucky as I did to be 1/660.

The other players build huge engines and I got frustrated, trying to keep it in. Since I was so far behind, I figured my only chance was to 3-pile and have them somehow not realize. They didn't green, and I kept thinking they'd go off any minute and demolish the Colonies (they had already built up to double-colony each turn.)

I was winning 10-0-0-0 on my turn with 2 piles empty and one Platinum left, and I had enough to buy the Platinum. I bought it, and was like "Okay it's over gg everyone count up points." This caused an uproar and everyone else "asked" for an undo...

Undo request was denied.

I wish. They proceeded to do their turns over and buy all the colonies.

45
Sorry if I was unclear... I meant that I don't ask for an undo if I wouldn't grant my opponent asking for the same undo.

I make it a policy to not ask for any undo that I wouldn't grant.

I've never actually played against those people who play Wishing Well and then ask for undo when they don't get what they wished for, are they really that common?

I don’t get this at all personally. I would see allowing an undo as being very gracious and sportsman-like, but to a degree above what I think should be minimally expected of people. I think someone is fully within their rights to deny an undo, and that such an act is not poor sportsmanship or rude; it is simply a lack of excessively good sportsmanship.

If I deny an undo request, it's me saying that I care more about my rating than having a good game of Dominion, unless I believe that not misclicking is part of the skill in Dominion. It's not morally wrong, in my opinion, to have this mentality, but I prefer not to play with such people.

Thank you! Someone needed to make this post.

I can sort of understand why some people don't like granting undos, but I personally think that having fun and seeing who's the better Dominion player (or who's more lucky) should take priority over winning, especially winning over a misclick.

Actually, I have 2 people on my blacklist (I know it would be bad to say their names in public) who both denied my undo request after I accidentally played my Coppers when I wanted to buy Grand Market. Both are in the top 1000, and one is even near the very top, around place 20 or 30. I'm not rooting for anyone to fail, but please, tell me they didn't get so high up by preying on misclicks... :P

Imagine this card: "Bandwagon, Victory, cost $0. When you buy this, +1 Buy and set it aside until the end of the game. Worth 1,000,000VP if you are the only person to have a Bandwagon, 0VP otherwise."

Turn 1: buy all the Bandwagons.
