Game Reports / Re: ...How did I screw up Ironworks/Gardens, exactly?
« on: June 27, 2012, 07:05:28 pm »
So basically, I should've gone heavier on Ironworks since he wasn't fighting me for Gardens?  That...makes quite a lot of sense, actually.  Here I thought two might've been over-doing it.  I tried to abort and get some points the old-fashioned way, but knew it was too late.

I thought that Caravan, Worker's Village, AND Workshop would combine for a pretty nifty Ironworks/Gardens rush, but my opponent was able to start getting Colonies before I was anywhere close to three-piling.  I am pretty sure that is not how Ironworks/Gardens is supposed to go, so can somebody tell me where I went astray?

Played a couple of games with Rhydgecht, who was quite pleasant.  Nothing spectacular, just a nice guy.

...Ah, I had gathered FunSocket was much more imminent than that.  That's reassuring!

....Backgammon?  I didn't like it the last time I played it, but I was also like eight so my tastes have probably changed since then.  I shall have to investigate.

Do actually have a job and a fairly awesome girl, but the job's barely paying the bills as-is and the girl is busy most of the time :\

Gotcha, thanks.  I haven't gotten it through my head yet that the undo button exists.

And then there's this game:
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201206/25/game-20120625-094217-c68b77b2.html

I probably should've just resigned but decided to be nice.  He never said anything though, and in retrospect I regret my decision.

Dominion Isotropic / Royal Seal, Grand Market, and auto-money
« on: June 25, 2012, 07:51:15 pm »
Is there any reason to have Royal Seal not autoplay?  Just played a game with Royal Seal and Grand Market, and missed my GM on a turn where I had RS/Gold/Silver/Copper/Estate because when I hit the money button, it didn't play the Royal Seal...which meant I "couldn't" get GM, so it played the Copper and I wound up having to settle for Gold.

Thanks!  I didn't know about boardgamearena or that RttG program, so I'll definitely avail myself of those.

So I'm on a big Dominion binge, but I don't often see my friend who plays, and allegedly isotropic is going down in the near future.  I fully intend to check out the FunSocket game, but I'm in a pretty tight financial spot, so if it's expensive or subscription-based or sucky I might not get it immediately, and thus would need something to fill the Dominion-shaped hole in my heart.

Any other free online games that are like Isotropic where I can just log on whenever I feel like it and play a quick game or two to kill a few minutes?  IDEALLY I'd like another deckbuilder, but I hear that there aren't really many other good ones compared to Dominion.  I've dabbled in Puzzle Strike and might go back to it.  I'd also be up for other board games, card games, eurogames, CCG's, or what have you, especially if they're kinda quick to play and anywhere near as good.  I don't even really know what's available, so I'd appreciate any ideas.

I am sorry that right after you embargoed the Gold in early game for the heck of it I got the first tournament win of the game and took a Bag of Gold.

My favorites are the people who complain about luck....but wait until after the game, then return really quickly before anybody can say anything back to them. XD

Just this morning I was thinking about Crossroads.  It gets you places really fast, but if there aren't any Provinces or whatnot to GO to, it doesn't do you much good.

Prinny
$2 Action-Reaction

Epithet of the Golden Witch
$7 Action
Trash your hand.  Gain a Gold for every card trashed in this manner.

Weil's Pawn Shop
$5 Action-Duration
+1 Action
When you play this, name a card.  Until the end of your next turn, you may play any copies of the named card twice, as if you had played it with a Throne Room.

Settlement
Action-Reaction
+2 Cards
When your opponent plays a card, you may discard Settlement from your hand.  If it is an Attack, trash a card.  If it is a Victory Card, +2 Cards.  If it is a Reaction, discard any number of cards from your hand and draw the same number.  If it is a Duration, gain a card costing $4 or less.

Item World
Action-Duration
Name a card.  As long as this card is in play, when you play the target card, it provides +1 Card on top of whatever else it does.

Stars of Destiny
Victory
+8 VP if you have at least 16 differently named cards in your deck.

Velvet Room
Action
Trash two cards from your hand.  Gain a card costing up to $1 more than the more expensive card trashed.

Unchained Storyline
Treasure
+$1 for every two Action cards you have in play.

Variants and Fan Cards / Activate-at-will Durations
« on: October 29, 2011, 12:28:08 am »
I had an idea that I haven't seen before- durations that you activate when you want rather than the next turn.  Something like this:

Officer Academy
$4 Action-Duration
This card stays in play until you choose to discard it.  You may do so at any point during any of your Action Phases.  When you do, +1 Card, +1 Action.

The net effect is that of a cantrip, sure, but it's more like a more flexible mini-tactician.  Activating it doesn't cost an action, which makes it useful in a variety of situations, and if you draw it on a turn you don't want to waste handsize or actions, you can simply discard it immediately and it's just a cantrip.  Once it's in play, you have tons of freedom in setting up a mega-turn, as it's like a free village/lab.  You can even use it to continue an action chain that fell a bit short on cards or actions.

I wasn't sure how to price it, and I'm still not.  It's pretty useless unless you're building a deck that lends itself to megaturns, or a junk deck where you have nothing to lose by playing it.  It's almost strictly inferior to Tactician, but the ability to delay until you can maximize the benefit, as well as the ability to activate it without using an action, and the ability to simply cycle it out on turns where you don't want it gives it flexibility where it lacks power.

I was originally going to propose the idea as a token mechanic rather than a duration, but I like the idea of it being out of your deck until you use it.  This route also prevents an otherwise strong KC combo.  The effect could be used with lots of little "boosts" (+Buy?  Trash a card?  +$?) but this was the one that struck me as most immediately interesting.

Dominion Isotropic / Re: Decline of civility on isotropic?
« on: October 16, 2011, 01:09:53 am »
So I am likely to be offending people with "GG"?  I don't wait or anything, I generally just say it or something similar as soon as the game ends.  Should...should I not when I win?

I feel the civility has declined a bit over the last couple of weeks but it is still generally neutral or good experiences.  I DID have somebody whine and ragequit the other day, but most of my games have proceeded without incident, if not tons of friendly banter.

418
Honestly, half the time I don't start planning until turn 2 or 3- not sure if I'm just that eager or want to move the game along or what.  After a very quick scan and a couple seconds thinking about if there are any combos with the 2-4 range, I often just default to whatever I consider a good generic open.  There have been times I've gotten to turn 3 or 4 and realized I passed up Chapel or something else obvious.

I don't generally prompt until it's been a couple of minutes, but I'm not above tabbing over and getting distracted if it's a regular pattern.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: What's your dominion pet peeve?

-Pirate Ship.  Just Pirate Ship.
-Getting declined in Auto-match.  Why are you there?
-Getting dropped.  Seems both my connection and isotropic have improved, but I used to time out of matches quite a bit.
-Opponents who leave without a word.  I am not the chattiest by any means unless my opponent starts talking, but I make it a point to at least throw out a "gg" or something.
-Ragequitters and people who blame me for my luck.  I am kinda okay with whining about luck, but I had somebody the other day make a snide comment and quit just as my engine was rolling.  Ain't my fault, dude.
-When it doesn't beep at me.  I perhaps am a horrible person for occasionally switching tabs for a couple seconds during long turns or idling, but every once in a while I don't notice it's waiting on me.

420
I have nobody to playtest with, so that route's out, as is any likelihood of these actually seeing play, but I do like making content for things, so I'm tossing around ideas for an Umineko-related fan expansion, based largely around a theme of draconian measures, as demonstrated here.

Witch's Epithet ($7 Action)- Trash your hand.  Gain a Gold for every card trashed.
I couldn't decide between $6 or $7 for this.  I settled on $7, as it makes it more of a late game card.  I figure the only cards you reeeeally are gonna have to think about sacrificing are Provinces, so making it $7 makes it that much more a late game buy.

Golden Witch ($4 Action)- Your choice: Either everybody else gains a Gold and a Curse, or you do.
I am honestly not sure whether the effect is beneficial, but it'd be solid in the presence of other cursers to drain the pile.
