Dominion Articles / Re: Shepherd
« on: April 27, 2018, 11:38:03 pm »
It feels remiss not to mention Tunnel when talking about Shepherd. And not to mention Inheritance when talking about Pasture.

But this bit bugs me considerably:
in order to get started, you want to make sure to always start with a Shepherd in hand. Assuming a 5 card starting hand, that means that 20% of your deck should be Shepherds.
It's simply not true that 20% of your deck being Shepherds means that if you draw 5 cards you're certain one will be a Shepherd. All you're certain of is that you'll average one Shepherd per five cards.

As an example, if you have twenty cards, four of which are Shepherds, you only have a 72% chance of drawing a Shepherd.

That's not just mathematical nitpicking; it seems to me it strikes at the heart of the viability of a Shepherd engine. Especially as a hand with multiple Shepherds is also undesirable.

I just played a tunnel shephard game.  it was amazing.

Dominion Articles / Re: Villa Quarry: A PSA
« on: April 27, 2018, 11:36:39 pm »
One thing to keep in mind, though, is that you don't necessarily want all of the Villas.  If you don't need additional actions or buys, Villa is basically just a Copper (that can be drawn dead, costs more, etc.), and gaining a bunch of Coppers to your hand is probably not the best move.

So while this combo is certainly useful, you should take care not to do it unthinkingly just because you can; make sure that every Villa you buy is making your deck stronger rather than weaker (or denying your opponent, moving towards a three-pile, or serving some other purpose that makes it worthwhile).  Even without this combo, I've often seen inexperienced players overbuy Villas just because it's convenient even when those Villas did them more harm than good.

yeah i only bought villas when they collide. And i think i bought like 4 or 5 on my mega turn to draw the rest and pile out provies easily.

On the same topic a fantastic engine to murder your opponents that i pulled out the other day and just crushed someone.  Villa/Bridge on same board.  Buy literally as many bridges as you can get your hands on.  If they collide just buy cheap villas.  needs a tiny bit of draw but this absolutely crushed

you realise that was a question asked 4 years ago?

Time doesn't exist. It takes time to understand.

This is the kind of paradoxical logic that causes computers to self destruct.

That was kinda my point.  This thread hadn't been posted in in 4 years... and it's still on page 7 on the forum.  That's a pretty sad rate of activity when you think about it.

This is a good start to an introductory article to Dominion Base 2nd ed. Not sure what exactly it's supposed to get at but it's a nice read and there's nothing wrong content-wise.
If it's directed towards beginners (which I assume) and also for the sake of courtesy, I would strongly advice you to omit the phrase

First off, yes, in case you’ve been living under a rock for the past year
This is a snotty remark against the reader and you can't know how each individual person on the internet receives that. You don't want anyone to start reading your article (or end it right there) with a bad first impression, do you?

Since you mentioned how much the 2nd ed in particular has to offer, consider writing a paragraph about catrips. Explain what they are and why they're good to have in your deck; reliable action densitiy, Vassal enablers, good targets for Throne Rooms, etc.

I mean I personally think it kinda sucks.  In some quirky combos in makes sense but I mean I don't care if it's on the board or not.  I mean it's on a two card list with Possession, one of the most controversial and hated cards?  I'd much prefer to see Kings court or Rebuild on a banned list than stupid stash.

Would like to join (new).

Shuffle IT Username: HonkeyFresh
Timezone:EST (but I am a night owl and don't mind playing in any US time zone)
Rated around: No clue.  I used to play a ton and visit post here a lot.  Took a few years off.  Still getting used to new cards and doing it all on feel (ie no help from here).  So Whatever my rank says should prolly be adjusted down a bit.  But I like playing good players too so whatevr. :o

My mother and I plan on coming from on down. It's not an 18+ event though, is it?

why?  You're mom not 18?  You might be better suited for a tourney in Kentucky...

Cultist
Fairgrounds
Fool's Gold
Knights
Magpie
Peddler
Rats
Tournament
Transmute
Treasure Map

Cultist isn't that bad even when you only have one of them.

I assume that he listed it for the same reason he listed Fool's Gold, Treasure Map, Rats, Magpie, Transmute, and Knights... it's a card that can't fully do what it says if you only can get one of them. So it becomes just a weaker Witch. I don't think there's anything wrong with that though; it's probably still strong enough that you'd at least consider getting it.

especially if its the only source of ruins.  more-so in a multiplayer game.

I favor AdamH's view:  it isn't the luck aspect of Black Market that's the major problem, it's the *exclusivity* aspect.  One of the big points of Dominion is that everyone has access to the same cards in each game.  Sure, there are piles where who gets to them *first* is a factor, but except in weird cases, you'll always have the chance to buy every card on the board.

Black Market and Tournament both break that part of the basic premise of Dominion.  That's the reason I find both distasteful.

The thing I like with Black Market is the variety it gives to a board, with unique cards to put in your deck. But I'm also not that fond of the exclusitivy aspect, and I think I would have preferred everyone to have their own BM deck with one each of the BM cards selected for this game.  Then they shouldn't be more than perhaps ~20, so you have a decent shot of finding your own copy of That Important Card that you opponent(s) already are using.

somehow I never even considered this, but this alone would make the card much better IMHO.

I despise luck-based cards (Swindler and Urchin come to mind), but i looooove Black Market.  Like, it is my favorite card by a lot (Bishop comes in at a distant 2nd).  I just love the possibilities it gives you.  And that's basically how I see it -- it doesn't add luck to the game as much as it adds possibilities.  You have to have a legitimate reason to ignore 25 kingdom cards.  And like you mention, it adds other neat mechanics to the game (in addition to what you mentioned: draw-up-to-x, Menagerie, exclusive access to Prizes, etc.).

Who really dislikes it?  I'd be curious to know why, especially if it were for other reasons besides just the luck factor.

Totally agree.  Nothing makes a game more one sided than one guy getting the only tournament/KC/Prince  or even curser/looter when no others are available on the board

Man, I don't understand why people hate on Balck Market.

Poor taste, unfortunately, is an all too common affliction.

are you referring to the Urban dictionary sex act http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=balck
or the Nazi general https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hermann_Balck.

I guess both are in pretty poor taste...

I still wonder how some people can be 4000+ and have a negative iso rank.

There is a known bug where if you change your username then your iso rank won't update with the extension and will look like -50. But their rank for the new username will be correct on the leaderboard.  http://www.gokosalvager.com/leaderboard

ahh. That makes more sense too.  I'd always wondered about that. I didn't even know you could change your username.  How do you do it?

Your opponent quit. At the bottom it says this and correctly labels you the winner. The first result is incorrect and results from a bug.

ahh then the points make sense I guess.  thanks.

added oddness, I somehow was granted 45 pts for a win by Goko.  I've had games where i was womping someone 10 turns in, they quit and I get 0 pts.  Wonder if this  is some weird hack/glitch as The guy I was playing is one of the guys who has a 4500 rating and a negative Isotropish score.

I also agree with almost all things AdamH said, but I'm not so sure about Sea Hag. It's not the best curser in the game, but it's still a curser, and it's pretty cheap for one as well. It's still stronger than Young Witch because it topdecks the Curse and doesn't have a Bane card, which imo makes up for the sifting. Also, wasn't it voted the best $4 card in the game once or twice? Would be kind of weird to rank it B then.

Cursers tend to have the game revolve around them in general.

Sea Hag does absolutely nothing for you except take up an Action. If your opponent can get rid of that Curse, then he's better off doing that instead of getting Sea Hag (unless it's something awful like Trade Route). Young Witch does something for you and that's a big deal.

Sea Hag was voted best $4 card in the game at one point, and I'm of the opinion that that was a giant mistake made by the community (myself included, I remember ranking it high at one point). I've said it before and had people reeling, but I stand behind it: Sea Hag is not a very good card. If I'm challenging your basic intuition about these cards, if I'm saying something that feels really off-base to you, then good. That's exactly what I want to do. The "conventional wisdom" surrounding these two cards is wrong. Maybe I should write an article about it? Hmm...

Sea Hag and IGG are the two more ignoreable Cursers. More so than Familiar and Soothsayer; the fact that they hand out purples and can still be ignored as often as they can speaks to how weak they are.
IGG is rarely ignorable. as it rapidly depletes 2 piles, something no other card does.

Nice article, I like the idea.
Only changes I would make are:

Counting house: C- > C or maybe C+
Doesn't happen often, but when it is good it can be the centerpiece of your strategy.

Talisman : B > B- or C+
I very rarely find this to be a key card.

Explorer: C+ > B
Can be a strong card in slogs, especially with alt VP.
Talisman can be a key card if there are any 3/4 cost cards people race for (fools gold/menagerie/single villages where other + actions arent available). And can be especially good when used in combination with any cost reducers like bridge/quarry, enabling u to grab 4-6 5 or 6 point cards in one turn.

Yes, Counting House is never great. Just an empty space on the board, always.

Why weren't there any a+s?
]

Chapel and KC are both A+ cards.  Neither can be ignored and both are the key cards to build/execute any engine based strategy.

I kind of think moneylender should be an A- too.  Early TFB helps building any stategy and thinning a deck helps all but quirky weird strategies that involve coppers or estates (ie crossroads).

Overall great list though.
