Donald's name does seem to be more prominent than most, though.

Maybe it just catches your eye because you recognize it?

It's easier to find because X marks the spot.

Variants and Fan Cards / Re: Dominion: Ice Age
« on: December 04, 2017, 06:09:17 pm »
I really like the concept, and some of the cards are really nice at implementing it. :)

Snow Hag seems fairly straightforward, and still very good. I feel like it might not be different enough from Witch, though.

Yeti is a cool concept that might be a bit too oppressive in multiplayer? Also, giving a Curse seems almost always better than the freezing attack, maybe it could become a Militia on misses?

Venturer seems interesting, except maybe for the name  ;D (Speleologist? Spelunker?)
The only problem I see with it is that it's awful without a way to trash the coppers. Coming with 3 stop cards, it actually hurts your deck unless you can trash them.

Rediscover and Mountain Village look good, among the best of the set

Ice Cave seems weak, I agree it could easily freeze 2.

Glacier seems like a good variation on the "convert coins into coin tokens" event idea. Seems ok at 6, but it's hard to say without testing.

Frozen Cache delivers a lot of power in a single buy. It shouldn't have a + before the , and the color seems a bit off?
Maybe a corresponding Event would solve the verbosity problem?
Let it go - Event 6$
Gain a Copper, a Silver, and two Golds from their piles. Set them aside with respectively 1, 2, 3, and 4 Ice tokens on them.

I like that Frost Spirit essentially keeps away 4 cards as long as you have control of your deck. It might be too powerful in letting you hybernate a lot of points. Or maybe not - it's a criticism that comes up every time somebody proposes powerful pseudo-trashers, but it's a concept that I've yet to see it play out badly in a game (except when on broken cards).

Cold storage seems like a reasonable concept.

Citadel doesn't seem all that unique, and I wonder how often he single ice token will be relevant and whether it's worth the space.

All in all, it's a concept that is definitely worth exploring. :)

One thing worth noting is that you can spend your turn's "base buy" to turn it into a Lost City. If it looks like you're totally going to dud a turn, you can do that to do a Hail Mary, and it might save your turn.
This also means that it works pretty well also with terminal +Buy. (eg: a hand of Fiddler/Margrave is a very happy hand)

The main issue I see would be tracking, and crazyness with spammable +Buy. I would test it eating at most 2 Buys at first.

As of yesterday, Dominion Scavenger has a recorded 2.301.038 2p games in the leaderboard (29k players). (plays/2)
Does anybody know whether they started recording them on 1.1.17 or later?

Later - the ranking system wasn't released until March 31 (http://forum.shuffleit.nl/index.php?topic=604.msg5892#msg5892). Also, games with bots are never rated on ShuffleIT, so they wouldn't be captured at all.

Yes, I don't think any of the above mentioned systems counted bot games.
Thanks for the correction regarding the rating system, I had forgotten. Updating the post. :)

Ok, let's look for some data. Over the years, there have been several platforms for 2p dominion online, and each one had its own stat-gathering site. Correct me if I'm wrong:
BSW
isotropic - councilroom
Goko/MF - Salvager
MF 2.0 - Salvager for 2.0
SI - Scavenger

I'm a bit fuzzy about the dates, again, correct me if those are wrong.

BSW is a mess to search, I think I could estimate the number of games played there but I'm not sure it would be worth the hassle.

isotropic has a recorded 12.051.301 games (I believe with all player counts) between 11 oct 2010 and 15 mar 2013. (of which 8.105.394 "eligible" games - I guess this means 2p).

Goko 1.0: I can get a full leaderboard on the Wayback machine dated 17 mar 2015, and it shows 2.044.155 2p games. I really have no idea about when Gokosalvager started keeping track. 17 march is also the very first capture of gokosalvager.com.

An analysis I ran almost two years ago showed that between June 2015 (launch of Dominion 2.0) and April 13th 2016, there were 1.787.686 games. Unfortunately, the Wayback machine can't really help us fill the gap between April 13th and December 31st, because it only saved the partial leaderboard.

As of yesterday, Dominion Scavenger has a recorded 2.301.038 2p games in the leaderboard (29k players). (plays/2)
Does anybody know whether they started recording them on 1.1.17 or later? EDIT: They started on March 31. Thanks JW.

So, to recap:

BSW: ???
iso: 10/2010-03/2013: 12.051.301
Goko: ???-03/2015: 2.044.155 (2p only)
MF: 06/2013-04/2016: 1.787.686 (2p only)
SI: 04/2017-11/2017: 2.301.038 (2p only)

Don't know what to pull out of these data (except that dominion online is less popular today than it used to be), but I couldn't resist the temptation of looking them up.

We are now testing a new Wisdom totem: Treasure, 1c, while this is in play, when you buy a Treasure, you may gain a cheaper card.
Toghether with Chancellor-Courage and miniMine-Patience.
We're not very impressed with it, maybe it will become "gain a card at most as expensive", which is more wordy.

Rare Spices giving 2 coins and costing 5 is pretty scary, I will probably bump it to 6 when I mock it up.

We have been playing with some of the others, and haven't made big changes. (Ascend discards instead of revealing, Farmer is still looking for its ideal size, Shepherd has been put on the side for the time being, even though it's pretty neat).

Have you figured out whether modded SP deserves a cost reduction?

Rules Questions / Re: Trashing several cards with Monastery

Another choice which might be a tad inelegant would be: if you have cards with on-trash abilities in hand, do it one by one, otherwise, do it all at once.

I think the below-the-line effect makes it mandatory to have a very powerful card on the top. And still, it's like saying that Provinces cost 8P this game, which I'm afraid would be way too sloggy.
Maybe if you want something similar you could make it positive instead of negative, and optional instead of mandatory, for example by an event saying:
Wooosh - 5c
Discard a Duchy from your hand to gain a Province.

There is my own Ascend who does something similar:
Ascend - 9c
You may discard any number of Duchies from your hand. For every discarded Duchy, gain a Province.

...which has proven to be a bit broken at times.

Keeping Cursed Gold in a deck-drawing engine because you can reliably trash the Curse every turn. CG+Curse+Trasher is three cards generating $3. Seems like Copper the hard way to me.

Uh I wouldn't condemn this on principle. Sometimes draw is abundant and gains are not, and replacing that Cursed Gold with something more efficient might cost you a whole turn. And you probably are stuck with the trasher either way, so you'd have to draw it anyway.

Failing to use a clockwise/counterclockwise order was a screw up on my part. I believe some four panel comics number each panel from 1 to 4 to prevent confusion.

And oh man, some pokemon get really ugly as they evolve. take a look at the Generation 6 starter pokemon (Fenekin, Froakie, Chespin).

I think that in later generations they have tried to make evolved starters more and more human-animal hybrids, for some reason. Which generally makes for awful pokemon.

I think the worst offender was blaziken. If the idea was to make a giant rooster of fire, they missed big time.

I actually sort of like Greninja.

I think Sacred Grove would be a great candidate for the Chaotic Good spot.

Cobbler/Cemetery: gain Cemetery to hand, trash Cemetery and three other cards.

Right after buying the last scrying pool:

Quote
A buys and gains a Scrying Pool.
A plays a Vampire.
A takes Locusts.
t receives Locusts
t reveals a Potion.
t trashes a Potion.
t gains a Silver.
A discards Locusts.

This is getting old.

Sibling Pie Cutter*
Action
Cost: $6

+1 Action
Reveal the top 5 cards of your deck.  The player to your left chooses two.  Either put those cards in your hand, or the others.  Discard the remaining cards.

* - Alright Timmy, you cut the pie, and Billy will choose which piece he wants!  No more fighting!

Confectionery - 3$
+2 coins
Choose two non-Victory Supply piles. The player to your left chooses one of them: you gain a card from it.
Every other player may gain a card from the other pile.

Variants and Fan Cards / Re: Banshee
« on: November 28, 2017, 04:52:30 am »
The copper ambassador effect is probably too strong, also considering that Banshee is nonterminal. Fact is, ambassador tends to slowly thin (2p) or slowly junk (3-4p), so it's getting the game somewhere. In 2p, banshee (bar other trashing) is only moving copper around, so you'll get the copper table tennis thing, only nonterminal and infinite. I'd be extra careful when testing this.
I really, really don't like for Ambassador to be considered a baseline against which fan cards are measured.  There a lots of threads that suggest Ambassador is a Very Special Card.
You shouldn't need to.  "nonterminal noble brigand, how dare you", or whatever.
Ambassador is ok.  But I think it's like, a design miracle that it's ok.  In some alternate universe with either 2$ or 4$ Silver I suspect it's very not o.k.

I don't understand what you're saying. Ambassador is by far the closest comparison (with Catapult second), so it makes sense to compare with those two cards.
Then, of course Amby is uniquely OP, and Ambassador variants should be looked at with extra care.

One has to admit that Imps are more fun than Hexes.

Mint - Changeling

Because sometimes you don't actually want the Mint

And a lot of the time a Changeling is a better Mint anyway. How often do you need a third Gold?  ;)

Will the last Dominion expansion (ever) be designed by you? Put differently: what's the likelihood of RGG publishing an expansion designed primarily by someone else?

Relatedly, how likely are we to see a re-implementation by you or another designer? Rather than just a thin re-theme (i.e. not Star Wars Dominion); I'm thinking more of something like what Wei-Hwa Huang did with Roll for the Galaxy.

I have lots of great ideas for that! We could add Japanese maids and big pink hearts (and make Silvermaid cost 4 and add many other balance improvements like removing Actions), or have letters on cards to make it scrabble-style, or we could even put everything on tokens for ease of use. Or maybe make a market with cards that change all the time. That would be nice. With factions and stuff. And spaceships.

This happened to me today. I seem to have the worst luck with Locusts. They have eaten my goat in a game without other trashing. Then they have triggered one of the worst shuffles ever in my Cursed Village/Storeroom engine (deck was suddenly 10 victory cards thank you very much), and at the same time hit a critical Province.
When I attack with them, it's usually "trash an estate, gain a curse" or in one case "let me take that curse back".  >:(  ;D

Anyway, my warrior just hit my opponent's only warrior (his deck being made of an unwise 6 cards) so I shouldn't complain too loud.

I literally had just finished writing this and it happened again. Another Curse bites the dust.

Someone, please explain this.

The top part is Tormentor. The bottom part is Obelisk.
Obelisk the Tormentor is a Level 10 Yu-Gi-Oh-Card, one of the god cards http://yugioh.wikia.com/wiki/Obelisk_the_Tormentor

Thank you. :)
