Rules Questions / Warrior Clarification
« on: August 10, 2015, 07:15:11 am »
I played a game last night where during my turn I played Page, followed by Warrior. My opponent had one card left in his deck at the time, which ended up being an Estate (and thus, would not have been trashed by the Warrior). Our question is: Should the Estate have been shuffled back into his deck before drawing the second card, or not? Or, more generally: Are all X cards for the Warrior attack drawn at once then discarded one at a time, or is it draw-then-discard (and possibly trash), repeated X times?

I think our confusion stems from the fact that while the card text suggests that it's one at a time:

For each Traveller you have in play (including this) each other player discards the top card of his deck and trashes it if it costs or .

The FAQ seems to imply that if multiple Travellers are in play, then all cards subject to the attack are drawn together:

Each player, in turn order, discards the appropriate number of cards from the top of his deck, trashing the ones costing or .

Thanks!

(1) Exchange a Hero.

(2) You're facing an opponent who has foolishly bought Masquerade while Possession is also in the Kingdom and the Champion happens to be in their hand when you Possess.

New Puzzle: I gain a silver. Why would I reveal Trader other than to annoy my opponent and slow down the game?

  • You gained the silver through Messenger's on-buy effect, but don't want your opponents to also gain silvers?
  • You gained the silver via Mine, but don't actually want the card to go to your hand (maybe because you're about to play a Library or Watchtower and you have reason to believe the cards you'll draw will be better on average than silver)?

Yet again, I'm very intrigued by the cards that are in this set.

I almost wonder though, if Patrol shouldn't possibly cost $6 (at least). It seems OP at $5 to me when comparing that trash-for-digging ability to the +1 Buy of Festival.

Most of the time, you probably have something you can trash with it at all phases of the game to activate its digging power. Early on, it's Estates, sure. In the midgame you can probably chuck a Silver or a now-less-useful $2 or $3, and near the end you can trash excess $4s and $5s or even Duchies, to get whatever it is you need to get you to $8 (or even $11). You can either dig for a Gold or Platinum, that second Treasure Map, another Fool's Gold, that crucial discard attack, or exactly the action you need to accelerate your engine, and with +2 Actions it could really be a powerhouse. As far as I know, it's the only card that let's you dig for exactly the card you want, right?

Anyway, I could be full of it, but I'm definitely feeling like that's really strong. Have you experimented with it at other price points?

I think a lot of these cards are very neat; thanks for sharing them.

I guess my concern with things is more logistical than anything else, and you can probably speak best to this having playtested these cards quite a bit: How do you find it is to manage all of the "In games using this" effects? A couple of people earlier posted suggestions about tokens or a new card color. I suppose that could be helpful but even so, with just nine of the cards you've revealed so far, if I'm playing with all of them in the same Kingdom I have to remember:

  • Trashed Curses return to the Supply (Arcanum)
  • Victory cards cost $1 more (Countess)
  • Curses are of variable penalty based on how many valuable treasures are in your deck (Idol)
  • The first Victory card you buy each turn is top-decked (Inquisitor)
  • Attack cards cost $1 less (Fletcher)
  • Coppers can be trashed from hand before Clean-up (Slave Trade)
  • You have 2 buys per turn (Street)
  • Copper costs $1 more (Architect)
  • When you gain Gold, other plays may gain Prospector in hand (Prospector)

I could imagine that playing with all of these at the same time (which I haven't tried, admittedly), it would be really tough to keep all of these new effects in mind. Over time, much like official cards doing weird stuff, some of that probably just becomes ingrained.

I suppose it's just that unlike with "while this is in play" cards, you don't have the text right there in your play area, but rather you have to survey the Kingdom each time you need a reminder.

Am I the only one who finds sitting down and sleeving a bunch of cards to be therapeutic?
I love it, too. Now that I have all the expansions I'm kinda bummed I won't be sleeving anything anytime soon.

Rules Questions / Doctor (overpay) + Overgrown Estate
« on: May 05, 2015, 06:15:11 pm »
Just came up in a game I was playing:

If on my turn I overpay for a Doctor and as part of resolving the overpay ability I reveal and decide to trash an Overgrown Estate, do I get +1 Card immediately, even if I still have to resolve more cards for the Doctor overpay, and put it into my hand? Or do I wait until I'm done resolving the overpay before drawing?

I also assume that I can't actually ever do anything with that card that I drew? If it's an Action, I can't play it since I'm in the buy phase, if it's a Treasure I can't use it since I can't lay down more Treasure after I've started buying cards.

Or... wait, I suppose if it's a Market Square I can gain a Gold with its reaction ability? Are there any other cards I could draw that I could possibly use in that situation?

Xylographer -- a person who makes wood engravings of text or images -- could be neat and particularly thematic as some sort of Woodcutter variant?

Edit: Since xylographs were used to produce new things like prints, maybe something like one of these?

Xylographer
Action: $5
+1 Card
+1 Buy
+$2

or, perhaps more thematic of turning one resource into another via a xylograph:

Xylographer
Action - Reaction: $4 (this cost is probably not right)
+1 Buy
+$2

--

When another player buys a card, you may trash this and another Action card from your hand. If you do, gain a copy of the bought card.

You definitely can, because I think the same way you do!

This is every set + promos (except Hinterlands, which I've ordered and is arriving tomorrow, but space has been already allocated in each row since my cards are arranged alphabetically so I know they'll fit): All kingdom cards, non-supply cards, one set of basic cards, the Seaside, Prosperity, and Adventures mats, all the tokens (Adventures / coins / VP / Embargo), and the rulebooks. The only thing not in here anymore are the randomizers (I use an app anyway), although they could fit. All of these cards are sleeved with Mayday regular Euro sleeves.

Some questions about new cards, and tokens:
With which cards specifically are the new tokens played?
The Wiki probably covers this best: http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/index.php/Adventures_tokens#List_of_token_cards_and_Events

Since there is only one copy of each event, am I understanding right that it is played upon purchase?
Yes.

With reserve cards is it discard pile upon purchase then once shuffled in play the top half such as (+1 action, +1 card) or whatever. Then during clean up placed on reserve mat to be called on to use at beginning of turn when needed?
Mostly right. On play though, reserve cards technically go to the Tavern mat immediately, even if in practice you may want to wait until clean-up for this. This is relevant for cards such as Duplicate and Royal Carriage, which can be called at times other than the start of your turn. You may play a Royal Carriage, move it to the Tavern, play another action, and then call your Royal Carriage immediately to replay it.

38
I definitely seem to be one of the lucky ones. I haven't noticed any cutting problems, but I am definitely disappointed with the bendiness of the cards. I do sleeve my cards though, so it's not nearly as noticeable as it is without the sleeves.

Have you ever considered releasing an expansion-to-an-expansion, like a Prosperity II, Dark Ages II, or Alchemy II (although I know I've read somewhere that the latter is fairly unlikely)? Something where RGG wouldn't have to include tokens or pieces again but that would allow you to further explore the design space of, say, VP tokens, Ruins, and Potions a bit more?

Miser + Raze: Buy an extra Copper at some point. Take your deck down to 1 card (8 Coppers to the Tavern, 3 Estates and then Raze itself get Razed). Then buy a Province every turn, 4 in a row before you run the risk of drawing totally dead. Speed things up with a Royal Carriage or two, if you can buy them early enough. (Much easier with Ferry on the table.)

Bonus points: Use your first $8 to buy a Prince, Prince your Miser, and then let your deck be completely green without a care in the world.

May not be the best strategy in the world (in fact it's probably definitely not, I haven't been playing Dominion all that long), but it was certainly very different and that was fun in its own way.

Edit: Obviously way too dangerous if there's a trashing attack on the board.

Rules Questions / Reserve Cards Timing
« on: April 25, 2015, 09:44:18 pm »
Apologies if this has been asked previously.

Is there any requirement that Reserve cards remain on your Tavern mat for any period of time other than an instant? If I play a Royal Carriage, followed by a Miser, can I immediately replay the Miser with the RC even though it has only been parked for a second? If I play my Wine Merchant to boost my buying power from $6 to $10 and only end up buying a Province that turn, do I get him back at the end of that Buy phase, even though he wasn't at the Tavern long enough to order a glass?

<insert Duplicate joke here>
<insert Duplicate joke here>

I suspect that the answer is no, they can be called immediately if desired, but wanted to confirm before I get too many plays under my belt. Thanks!

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Card Sleeving?
« on: April 25, 2015, 03:41:03 pm »
I use the regular Mayday Euro sleeves, and have only had to replace one sleeve at all so far (on a Silver). We play maybe two or three games a day, and have had the cards sleeved for about two months or so. Some people claim that even sleeved they fit in the original box (except you might need to shift a few Coppers), but I thought it was a bit too snug to do that, honestly. We ended up switching to the Broken Token box like the one AdamH has recently been showing off.

Bought them from FRP Games ($1.80/100) with a bunch of other sleeves of various sizes to do most of my card-driven games at the same time. Shipping was $9.95 flat in the U.S.; I find that Mayday's shipping tends to be outrageously high, even if you get a good discount with an active coupon code. Amazon's price for the same is exorbitant.

10 is something Trade.  That's definitely the Triangle Trade being pictured.  Maybe Merchant Ship/Trade?
I actually thought that 10 was something Trade Route, but there are at least 10 Adventures cards that produce images very similar to #10 when combined with Trade Route. But in the hopes that it might combo with another answer that's already been given, perhaps it is Trade + Colony?

I'm pretty sure that #10 is Survivors + King -- The character is Mother Abagail, from The Stand
