Tournaments and Events / Anything in Chicago?
« on: March 18, 2019, 02:21:41 pm »
Hey y'all. I moved to Chicago a year ago and so far haven't had much luck finding Dominion tournaments or even just  board gaming events with a sizable Dominion scene. Anyone know of anything around here that I don't know of yet?

Cards being played can only move into the play area if they are where they expect themselves to be.

Vassal checks the top of the discard pile. If you reveal Faithful Hound and set it aside, you cannot play it as Vassal lost track.

Herald plays from the top of the deck. I'm having trouble thinking of a real loss-track situation here; I guess if Patron's reaction topdecked a card instead of giving you a Coffers? But then it would lose track.

Throne Room actually doesn't move anything. Once the card is played the first time, it stays where it ended up. You don't pull Reserves off your mat or move Encampment back from set aside land or whatever. So when BoM ends up in the trash it's not going anywhere.

Throne Room doesn't lose track because it was never keeping track. Throne doesn't care where the card is at any point I can immediately think of. BoM doesn't "play itself" - it is played like any other Action card is played, so it doesn't come in with a special redundant "move itself" step that differs from other actions. The text of that wording in the rules just clarifies that Band of Misfits is an action that gets resolved in addition to whatever it is emulating (at least before you decide what it is)

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Research is not fun

Research isn't great, but I like it in the games where you desperately need to increase your handsize. Played a weird game with a good gainer and a pair of research's where it let you do engine-ish stuff that you otherwise couldn't.

This is just the Theoretical Messed Up Highway Wording discussion again, isn't it.

Irrelevant sidetrack time: It would actually work if there were no dividing line on the Wine Merchant.

It would only work the turn it was played, right? Because then it would be an on-play effect of Wine Merchant, and this it wouldn't linger. So in general a way worse card.

Weekly Design Contest / Re: Weekly Design Contest Thread

Will make images later. They're a bit strong but cute.

Boneyard / Action - Shelter / $1
+1 Villager

Hole / Night - Shelter / $1
Trash this. If you do, trash a card from your hand.

Dilapidated Estate / Victory - Shelter / $1
Worth 2 VP per differently named Shelter you have in your deck.

I think you all are assuming your personal dislike for Hexes is universally understood across most of Dominion. I like them, and many others do too. I have friends that hate most attacks but love Hexes.

Payload to me is more vague: it's the thing that makes building your engine worth it - the thing you're trying to do every turn. An engine could have a payload of a single province with a consistent Ghost Ship play, for example.

So Outpost is payload because the presence of Outpost pushes you toward the engine and you're really trying to play it as often as possible as it increases your output. Otherwise, what else would it be? It's not really an engine component as it doesn't provide draw or actions or any other resource like that. It just increases the output of the deck.

Economy (source of coins) is essentially always a part of payload but it's not exactly the same meaning. Same with gains / buys, etc.

Don't you just pretty much build the engine there with Outpost for payload and that's it?

Outpost isn't payload is it? I think if it as something that, in the type of deck you can build with this Kingdom, simply doubles whatever other payload you have.

An extra turn with a hand size you can only take advantage of once you're built up is payload, definitely. The same way you could build an engine just to play Possession, you could build an engine just to maximize Outpost turns.

No trashing is a bit of a bummer but you can get good reliable cycles with Wharf and Enchantress plays.

But it's not payload by itself. It's almost exactly like Fortune, actually; it doubles your total payload. You still need to have other payload in order for it to do you any good.

By that standard, you could essentially rule out almost any other payload card. Most payloads need economy from elsewhere in order to fully work.

Watchtower will also mitigate opponents' Goons, of course.

I've seen worse three-card hands than KC, KC, Watchtower.

The biggest thing is that you're stuck with Estates and at least one Treasure (Loan) - you'll also likely carry a Silver or two for awhile early. So that's at best four stop cards out of a six card hand. You'll never draw your entire deck, but you can still set up big turns sometimes I think.

Sorry, my brain mixes up Vault and Venture. That changes things a lot.

You can still get SOME draw out of Watchtower, and do KC Goons Watchtower... you won't be consistent but you only need a couple big turns to come out on top.

King's Court and Goons is going to dominate this board for sure - you get to keep scoring while building so you just never stop building up.

I'd open double Loan probably just because there's no other trashing, grab a Vault or two early to help spike 6, and then just shoot for as many KC and Goons as I can stuff in a deck. It's a little precarious with the limited draw and no cantrips so you have to have 2KC in hand to start off, but you can probably still set up some big turns.

Maybe there isn't time in 4P, but in that case Loan / Venture into Goons BM is also fine.

Dominion FAQ / Re: gardens How many points?
« on: March 04, 2019, 07:47:24 am »
3 + 3 + 2 + 3 + 4+ 4+ 2+ 1 + 10 = 32
32 / 10 = 3 (remainder 2)
Gardens are worth 3 points each

3*3 + 3*6 + 2*3 + 3*1 = 34 points

I was specifically trying to contradict the hint that you needed to buy cards to do it.
OIC!

I guess you're also trying to minimise shuffle luck, there? Otherwise, just draw Cursed Gold and 4*Copper then spend your starting Coffers. (-8

Whoops, somehow missed the obvious move there...

Variants and Fan Cards / Re: Where to buy blank cards?
« on: March 02, 2019, 12:34:51 pm »
Board game geek seems to have a bulk of blank dominion cards, you can even buy the promos separately. Did they have an exclusive deal with rio grande games? Or something. There the only ones that seem to be selling them, there even pre packaged. For the blank cards to be packaged wouldn’t you need a small factory.

They just come in a clear plastic sleeve, similar shape to a trading card booster pack. Don't really need a factory for that, just a heat crimper and a roll of plastic.

I was thinking the same thing. If you really want to be cost-effective, get Dark Ages. It gives you the best value for money of any set.

Dark Ages is 500 cards for $~45, vs 250 cards for ~$18 with the Base Cards box. It isn't super close, Base Cards are the Best Buy here.

It is disappointing that buying the base cards is our 'best buy'.  I would think that the supplier would have a 'bulk' option for the blank cards.  As I have determine the best option to playtest, is to use the base cards as the 'support' for my 'playtest' cards (printed on standard paper inside sleeves).

I don't see why a supplier would stock bulk quantities of blank cards. It's not as if production cards are printed on already-cut card blanks or anything like that.

Puzzles and Challenges / Re: get a province... ON TURN 3

Setup: Pooka, Baker or Borrow, some shuffle luck.
Uh... if Pooka's in the Kingdom you start with Cursed Gold in your deck. It's simpler just to buy a Gold on T1/T2 and draw Gold, Cursed Good, Copper, Copper, something on T3.

I was specifically trying to contracdict the hint that you needed to buy cards to do it.

hint: u have to buy some cards

Do you?
Setup: Pooka, Baker or Borrow, some shuffle luck.
T1: 3C 2E: Expedition
T2: 4C 1CG 2E: Baker token or Borrow - buy Province

To do it specifically on Turn 3 just skip your first turn I guess.

If you want to literally not gain any card that isn't Province, open 2/5 with Borrow and Baker; use the Baker token to buy Expedition T1 and then Borrow for the Province T2.

Rats is not TFB; it doesn't care what you trashed. It does work well with TFB cards.

I guess what I'm saying is it also works well with TF-no-B cards.  Maybe TFB is the combo, not the trasher?

"Well" is relative; I wouldn't get Rats on a board with Steward or Junk Dealer as the other trashing.

"Trash a card for a benefit, usually proportional to the properties of the trashed card" (name, type, cost) is what TFB means when people use it. Nobody says TFB talking about the nombo between Rats and Steward.

Variants and Fan Cards / Re: Houseruling Caravan Guard
« on: February 25, 2019, 01:43:06 pm »
Two things the original Caravan Guard does:

1. It's a cantrip that lets you "check" what card it was going to draw before a discard attack hits. The problem with cantrips in those games, especially vanilla ones that don't do a lot like Caravan Guard, is that you have to make your discard decision without knowing what they will draw for you. Caravan Guard bypasses that by letting you know now.

2. You get the beneficial effect (Coin) a turn sooner as many have noted.

It's not super strong but I don't think it needs to be stronger.

You lost me at "Seer is hardly seen as a power 5 cost card".

Possession votes must be people going "it must be banned because it's too good". It's not.

You're right, the case is impossible unless someone decided to break the rules. I'm unsure why it's in the wiki.
