Game Reports / Hunting Party or 5/2?
« on: April 20, 2016, 09:47:05 pm »

Code: [Select]

I don't know what I did wrong here. Was Hunting Party that much better than Stables here? He got Trading Post and I never really got to kick off. I think it was the Hunting Parties for sure, though getting 5/2 certainly helped for him.

Game Reports / For Newer Players

Okay, this board is probably obvious to more experienced players, but I wanted to show this board to some newer or less experienced players because who I played made a serious mistake on this board. (he played valiantly on other boards) I see this mistake a lot when I play Dominion against other people.

He was simply building an engine where there just wasn't one. There's no +buy, so there's no reason to get a Potion (and ignoring that he got Transmute) in order to get Golems. By the time he got his thing going, I was already 4 Provinces up with a steady reserve of coin tokens.

So when seeing big cards like Golem and big engine components, first ask yourself whether there is even a point to building an engine in the first place. If there isn't a +buy or some kind of Remodel variant, consider trying to get to buying the first Province instead of overbuilding, or else you will already be behind in a game where there's no way to catch up.

Let's Discuss ... / Let's Discuss Base Set Cards: Woodcutter
« on: April 19, 2016, 10:46:06 am »

Finally, the least anticipated card in the entire Base set. What even is there to talk about?

-Is Woodcutter worse than Silver even though it's the same cost? Yes, it's because it's terminal
-If Woodcutter costed $4 but had a +1 Action on it, would it be better? Yes obviously
-Should Matthias Catrien ever make a picture for Dominion again? No he shouldn't

Here's way more important news: You all get to decide for me which expansion to talk about next!

Guilds
Adventures
Dark Ages
Hinterlands
Cornucopia
Prosperity
Alchemy
Seaside
Intrigue
Base
Empires

My vote is on Dark Ages, as that is my favorite set.

Let's Discuss ... / Let's Discuss Base Set Cards: Workshop
« on: April 19, 2016, 10:40:57 am »

Idle hands are the devil's workshop. Since you're playing Dominion, you are obviously idle, so you are the devil's workshop while you play Workshop at the same time. You gain a $4 cost card, he gains your soul.

-How is Workshop worse than Ironworks?
-Is Workshop underrepresented because of Ironworks? Should it be bought more?
-Did Workshop get better or worse with Adventures?

Let's Discuss ... / Let's Discuss Base Set Cards: Witch
« on: April 19, 2016, 10:37:05 am »

Which Witch is Witching Which Witch, whilst wishing Witching Witches on Witches Witching said Which Witches?

-Is Witch just a Moat (without protection) that hands out Curses?
-Why is Witch BM a thing?
-How does Witch compare to other Cursers?

Let's Discuss ... / Let's Discuss Base Set Cards: Village
« on: April 18, 2016, 02:55:27 pm »

I think I'm going to do two cards a day. There are just so many blah cards in Dominion on their own, the real fun is with the combos. Take Village and Throne Room for example. Perfectly fine cards, but when discussed in a vacuum, meh.

-Is $3 worth an extra Action?
-Best art in all of Dominion?

82
Let's Discuss ... / Let's Discuss Base Set Cards: Throne Room
« on: April 18, 2016, 11:03:16 am »

Why is it called Throne Room? I suppose it's because things are twice as important in a Throne Room instead of the Hovel you call home. Well, things would then be thrice as important in a King's Court, and also twice as important in a Royal Carriage, and also twice as important in a Procession, but things get trashed because some Cultists like to party hard.

-Is it slightly inconvenient that you are forced to play Throne Room, whereas you don't have to play King's Court?
-Is Throne Room as strong at $5?
-I don't know what else to say because this card is good

I was winning handily in this game, playing some guy on this forum to see how good he was. He was buying Scrying Pool, and I was telling him how that wasn't really a great option on this board... And then I saw Rats. It's a card I always ignore, and I payed heavily for ignoring it. Rats/Scrying Pool easily crushed what little advantage I had.

Let's Discuss ... / Let's Discuss Base Set Cards: Thief
« on: April 17, 2016, 11:32:00 am »

Thief steals the spotlight today! I think Thief is actually a higher skill card. Yes, it's worse than Noble Brigand, but on the right board, Thief is actually a great card to have. With that being said... Thief trashes your opponent's coppers for you, making it harder for you to win, with no extra benefit on your end when you play the terminal. It's not often a good card, and overall usually one of the worst cards in the game.

But it's still better than Scout.

-What are the kinds of boards Thief is good on?
-Is Thief a possible counter to the all new Big Money threat to engines, Treasure Trove?
-Any way to power up Thief a bit to make it more viable?
-How cool is Thief's art? Spoilers: It's very cool.

Let's Discuss ... / Let's Discuss Base Set Cards: Spy
« on: April 16, 2016, 05:13:42 pm »

Basically the Scout of the Base Set, (but still better because it actually draws a card) Spy is something that I'm going to say flat out, something you don't want unless you can just gain it, and only after there's nothing better to gain.

-Spy gets a lot better after getting tons of them, but is it worth the tons of time it takes to get the marginal bonus?
-What's worse, a deck full of Scouts, or a deck full of Spies?
-What is the likelihood of blowing your own brains out if your opponent's strategy is a deck full of Spies?

Let's Discuss ... / Let's Discuss Base Set Cards: Festival
« on: April 15, 2016, 10:55:25 pm »

Time to celebrate, because I finally got around to Festival! Oh, and I completely forgot this card, too. How fun, right?

-How does Festival rank among Villages?
-Does Festival get insanely good with a Pathfinding's +1 Card upgrade? What about Training's +$1?
-Does the lack of draw hurt Festival to the point where you'd prefer Bazaar?

Let's Discuss ... / Let's Discuss Base Set Cards: Smithy
« on: April 15, 2016, 10:04:01 am »

I'm not going to type a funny intro this time, because nobody likes my jokes. As such, people may make their own jokes instead, like a Smithy would make something. And I will draw inspiration, also from Smithy in the Dominion sense.

I can see why nobody likes my jokes.

-Is Smithy still okay nowadays, because it looks so bland and it doesn't have text coming out of its nose?
-How bad is the art?
-Adventures combos?

-Is Remodel-BM a thing?

Game Reports / Beating Rebuild

Code: [Select]

https://dominion-game-logs.s3.amazonaws.com/game_logs/20160414/log.0.1460669406790.txt

Well, my opponent played horribly. He didn't buy more than 2 Rebuilds, and he kept buying Estates. I did not contest his 5/2 with a desperate Rebuild counter, though given how he played his Rebuild game, I could have safely done that and won handily. I didn't know how he'd play. I knew I was already desperately behind. So I decided to build a Scrying Pool/Forger/Outpost engine, and well, I ended up crushing him pretty easily.

He played Rebuild wrong, but could a top Rebuild strat win here against what I did?

Let's Discuss ... / Let's Discuss Base Set Cards: Moneylender
« on: April 13, 2016, 04:18:37 pm »

An inquiry: How does Moneylender even make money? I'd totally invest in a system that gives me three temporary dollars for every one I invested. I'm spending the money anyways. Of course, being the capitalist pig that I am, I don't see any way of making a profit. But Comrade Moneylender here, he doesn't make money. He just cares about the community like the nice man he is, and that is just Making Fun for himself. But Making Fun is getting replaced. Get out of here, Moneylender!

-How good of a trasher is Moneylender? Is it weaker or stronger now?
-Is this card better or worse than Miser?
-Any reason to put tokens on Moneylender?

Let's Discuss ... / Let's Discuss Base Set Cards: Moat
« on: April 12, 2016, 06:35:11 pm »

Donald will soon reveal his new set, but man, you just can't have an Empire without a good Moat to defend it. Hadrian's Wall didn't keep the barbarians out, and the Great Wall of China didn't keep the Huns out. and the Great Wall of Trump won't keep out the SJWs either

Screw walls. They're cliche. Moats are where it's at. Firewalls can't keep viruses out like a Firemoat will, even though that's a total oxymoron.

Has Moat gotten better or worse since it came out?
Moat and Lost Arts is an obvious combo that gets you incredibly cheap Labs, but what else can you do with Moat and Adventures?
Any time you don't want to reveal Moat, besides enacting other reactions?

These topics are Mine. Mine own. Mine precious. Not Jack Rudd's. Mine.

-Mine into Platinum is underappreciated, but is Mine into Relic/Treasure Trove strong and worth considering?
-Any use in an engine?
-Any weird reason to pick this card up?

General Discussion / User Reaction
« on: April 11, 2016, 10:26:38 pm »
Okay, let's play something fun. I'll tell some situation, and then the object is to say how any given user on this forum would react.

example: Someone has just stolen a user's tires from their car. What would they do?

Roadrunner7671: Thinks about Scout
eHalcyon: Posts a meme about it on Random Thread III

Okay, so here's the situation. A user is ordering something from McDonalds, but the order is wrong. Go!

Let's Discuss ... / Let's Discuss Base Set Cards: Market
« on: April 11, 2016, 03:15:27 pm »

I tried looking up Market quotes, but all I got was stock information. So here's the latest in stock market activity:

NASDAQ    4857.73     7.04 ▲ 0.15%
NASDAQ-100 (NDX)    4483.80    8.87 ▲ 0.20%
Pre-Market (NDX)    4493.08    18.15 ▲ 0.41%
After Hours (NDX)    4473.99    -0.94 ▼ 0.02%
DJIA    17626.57    49.61 ▲ 0.28%
S&P 500    2049.91    2.31 ▲ 0.11%
Russell 2000    1100.38    3.07 ▲ 0.28%

-How awesome is this card with Adventures?
-Is Market the card to base all $5 costs by?
-Can Market be ignored on a board with +buy and immense payload?
-Market is just a $1 cantrip with a buy attached. Is that worth $5?

A well regulated militia, composed of the body of the people, trained in arms, is the best most natural defense of a free country.

-Has this attack gotten weaker or stronger with the advent of Adventures?
-How does this card compare to other $4 cards?
-How bad is a discard attack compared to the new Adventures attacks? Older attacks?

If you have a garden and a library, you have everything you need.
                                                                         -Marcus Tullius Cicero

Cicero doesn't seem to be very good at Dominion.

-How good is this card? Is it underrated, or is it as ignorable as it often is?
-Best case scenario for this card? Worst case scenario?
-Is $5 too pricey? Would $4 be broken?
-Adventures shenanigans?

Game Reports / Procession Power

Procession is just insane. It saved my rear in this game. I was very behind, I didn't win the Advisor split, I was thinking about Procession, and I wanted to thin out a bit, but before I knew it, I lost the split 7/3, and he Provinced two turns in a row, so I was very frightened. So I doubled down, bought a bunch of Treasuries and cards to burn on Procession, and I got nice collisions at the right time, for which I am thankful. I stole the win from him by clamping down on Provinces, trashing them for other Provinces to rush a quick ending and hopefully win, which I did.

Like what I did here? Anything better you see?

Forum Games / Bracket Wars
« on: April 08, 2016, 11:22:33 am »
With the Bracket Fad going on (Thanks, Donald X.) I have devised a new game.

1. Accatitippi
2. Haddock
3. liopoil
4.
5. Davio
6. ADrownedKernel
7. J Reggie
8. Awaclus
9. Roadrunner
10. Gkeig12
11. Ashersky
12. Scott_pilgrim
13. LibraryAdventurer
14. Hydrad
15.IguanaIguana
16. Silverspawn

16 players are needed.

Each player will send me two random things/topics/people/nouns via PMs, and I will bracket them using random RNG.

Voting in each round will take place in this thread over the course of 24 hours. In the event of a tie, I'll flip a coin or something, so try not to get a tie. :p

Whoever owns the item that wins the bracket wins the game. It's kind of like Apples to Apples, but with BRACKETS.

I'd say the only rule is not to reveal who submitted what.

So yeah, who's ready to play the most lamest game since the dawn of Monopoly?
