Right on cue~!

An old woman is woken up in the middle of the night by a familiar tune. She immediately pulls out a gun and shoots a man. Explain.

Anyone like Russian music? My favorite singer released his new video about a week ago and it's preeeeeetty sweet. (And it kind of looks like it belongs on a Dominion card.)

Dominion General Discussion / Greening traps?
« on: November 05, 2014, 08:36:53 pm »
I'm sure everyone here has heard of PPR - in a game without or with unreliable +Buy it's dangerous to get the second-to-last Province because the other player might have more VP than you blah blah blah. There's also that tactic of trashing all but one opening Estate so you can win on an even Province split.

But there are definitely other ways you can trick your opponent in the greening phase/endgame. The one I've noticed a lot when I play my default Base deck is what I call the "Three Province Trap". It happens when both players are aiming for engines that get double Province and goes something like this:
Quote from: Setup
Player 1 buys one Province before their engine is finished
Player 2 finishes engine and buys two Provinces
Player 1 finishes engine and buys two Provinces
Now there are three Provinces left and the split is Player 1: 3, Player 2: 2. This normally goes in one of three directions:
Quote from: Outcome 1
Player 2 buys two more Provinces
Player 1 buys the last Province plus some combination of Duchies and Estates and wins
Quote from: Outcome 2
Player 2 buys just one Province and some combination of Duchies and Estates
Player 1 buys the last two Provinces and wins
Quote from: Outcome 3
Player 2 buys some combination of Duchies, Estates, and non-VP cards
Player 1 buys two more Provinces
Player 2 buys the last Province and some combination of Duchies and Estates (and then loses from not enough VP)
Obviously this is in a game where the only VP come from Province/Duchy/Estate. The only way I've managed to beat people who pull this off is by them getting bad draw on their would-be winning hand. Are there ways to avoid this trap? What would you do?

But more importantly, what other greening traps are there out there? There are a lot more VP cards than the basic three, so there have got to be more tactics like this.

Random question: Can I do the next one?

I don't think you even need to wait.  Just start a new thread.  I don't think anybody would mind.
I only wanted to do one, which probably doesn't merit its own thread.

I don't want the questions to overlap because that would get kinda confusing. I was planning on just waiting until this one's completely solved (because it looks like it's almost there) and then posting mine, but I could also just send it to you sudgy so you don't have to wait.

I personally thought Flatline was the strongest episode writing-wise of the season, but the horror element crossed a line with me. I had to remember how to move after watching it.

I affectionately named this picture file "holyfrickenfrack.png"

I was getting Goonsed for a long time and I thought I was going to lose but then my Cities leveled up and Colonies happened. Ka-ching.

After that my non-bot opponent wanted a rematch and ended up getting 344 victory points. (But there was the slight matter of me convincing him to use unrated mode, just in case...)

Very happy that Missy is a Time Lady, and completely fine with her being the Master. The only part of it I don't like is her earlier-episode comments that the Doctor is her "boyfriend" and her kissing the Doctor - look, if you're going to do Doctor/Master slash, have the guts to do it when the Master is still male. Waiting until she's conveniently female is grating, and more "Moffat being Moffat". That is, if they even go down that road. I have hope that these comments were just Mistress-esque madness and won't be dwelt on, which would be for the best.
YES. THIS. YES YES YES. On the one hand, I'm REALLY happy that we finally have a legit female Gallifreyan/Time Lady again and that there's been a male-to-female regeneration, but on the other, is Moffat seriously canonizing Doctor/Master now just because the Master is a woman? That just screams homophobia AND misogyny. Oh sure he'll make a lesbian couple as background characters and such but when it actually "matters", nope, no non-straights allowed. Like you, the least I can hope is that the story doesn't actually dwell on it. Also, I really want to know what the person in question's plans are...

Not to mention, some of the lines in this episode reminded me a LOT of a scene from my favorite webseries, Chronicles of Syntax. Spooky much? (the beginning is timestamped in the link - watch until at least 14:43 to get the connection)

Was James's grief relationship/romance-related?

No.
Dammit! I thought I was onto something. Ah wells.

Okay I'm leaving the details to someone else but this is a hunch about the answer.

Was James's grief relationship/romance-related?
If so, was the sawdust proof that Alex's intentions were about business rather than romance?

Was James's motivation for killing himself related to Alex?
Was it grief?
Anger?
Jealousy?

I hate to "interrupt" sudgy's challenge but there's one logic puzzle that I've been dying to know the answer to for years. It goes something like this, though I can't remember the details:
A person has died. Someone takes the arm of the dead person, and sends it to someone else, who sends it to someone else, etc. Ultimately the arm ends up going through seven people before the last one throws it away. What is going on?
Please, if someone knows that one, could you rephrase it the right way and open up questions?

Now questions for sudgy:
Were the two men in professions related to entertainment?
Visual art?
Construction?
Was the sawdust part of something's creation?
Or something's destruction?
Did Alex know that seeing the sawdust would have prevented James's suicide?

This is mostly curiosity but I'll turn it into a puzzle/challenge anyway.

Suppose you wanted to make a (still playable) game with the most expensive kingdom cards possible. What cards would you choose and what would your strategy be?

Screw this game

Correct me if I'm wrong.
Nup, you're absolutely right.

Actually, I should have rephrased my post to say "get a 3 Estate/2 Copper hand 3 shuffles in a row", that would be more accurate.

Total domination: Achieve a pin combo
Might as well resign: Be on the receiving end of a pin combo
What's the use?: Dead-draw more than 5 action cards at once
Traffic jam: Draw a hand of all terminals
Empty chairs: Draw 3 or more Throne Rooms or King's Courts without other actions
The CEO: Have 100 or more coins during buy phase (inspired by Adam H.)

Caravans. Cities. Provinces. Margrave. Coin tokens. GG. And when I say GG, I mean GAME OVER SORRY NOT SORRY.

(I think what made the difference is that the other players wanted to thin their decks down with Uprgade which I thought was kind of weak while I didn't bother with trashing and went straight for Cities.)

Oh what a good card is KC
How I love to play actions times three
What cards will I pick up?
There's two King's Courts, what luck!
And no other actions? F**k me.

I might go with
"What cards will I draw?
Two King's Courts! Huzzah!"
because it scans a little better and also lets you say "Huzzah"
I was wondering how to make that third line scan better. And I say "huzzah" all the time so I can't believe I didn't think of this.

I dug myself into a deep pit today by opening Spy while my opponent opened Smithy and proceeded to buy two Witches. They then proceeded to seriously curse me and empty out the Labs trying to get a mega engine. I was about to resign BUT THEN I saw that two piles were gone and the Cellars were close to out, plus I grabbed an early game Province while I had the chance before. Evidently my opponent either didn't notice me only buying Cellars or they thought that missing Province was theirs but I managed to slip past their engine building and snag the win. And that is why you watch the piles, kids.

(Seriously, they had enough money/buys per turn that they could easily have had at least one Province/Cellar turn and screwed me over. I was actually whispering "don't buy a Province, don't by a Province" whenever it was their turn.)

Goko Salvager is down so can't show the log, but basically, I managed to grab like 8 Alchemists for a mega engine plus sabotage two of my opponent's Saboteurs AND a Province. Am I actually getting better at this game?
