Help! / I know I could've won this one
« on: February 20, 2014, 04:37:43 pm »
I'm on a ridiculous losing streak and it's starting to get really frustrating. I don't want to spam this section of the forum but I might as well get some help. I'm clearly not playing nearly as well as I used to to. My rating has dropped significantly and I'm losing a lot more than I'm winning. I'm sure there are some finer points that I've forgotten somehow and hopefully you guys can clear them up for me.

This one was really close but I know that if I played a little differently I would've had the win. Maybe I could've gotten more goons? Skipped fools gold? Gotten madmen? I don't know. Are there any cards that work especially well together here? How do I know what to buy and what to skip? Obviously I'm very confused.

Mafia Game Threads / Re: MXXXIX: Adventure Time! Mafia (Day 1)
« on: February 20, 2014, 02:52:34 pm »
I think PPS's post was a joke, although watching how people react to jokes is a big part of the early game. Getting super-defensive right away isn't exactly super townie.

What exactly did Axxle post that seems like he's "trying too hard"? Not trying to be aggressive, just asking for something specific.

Yeah it's a joke, but it's not the first time I've heard "thick skin" be mentioned in the same breath as mafia and I think it's silly.

Again, I have no experience with what is "scummy" or "townie" but Axxle's erratic posting and constant joking about being scum is obviously to get some sort of response. Would it be scummy to cast early suspicion on yourself so as not to be considered scummy later?

I think we should lynch one of the new guys just to help him grow the thick skin he's gonna need moving forward.

Vote: Andrew

Thick skin? Yeah I need an online forum game for that, thanks.

Yes I'm new and I could be wrong but I don't see how a post like Robz's post could be considered either townie or scummy. Both town and scum are capable of posting something like that. I guess you guys know the kind of stuff he does during games but he knows that too and can adjust accordingly. PPS's logic is just as good as anyone else's right now, at least in my mind.

That said, everyone knows Axxle better than me so maybe you can clue me in but I feel like he's trying too hard to seem town.

I 2nd the fuzzy one (even though it isn't really a second anymore), vote: shraeye

And, as always, I'm loudly and morally opposed to claiming but I have to cook right now so I'll skip the loud bit and just be moral.
I cannot confirm that she is actually cooking now.  She could be dancing a scum-dance in her scum-pants.

Ew.

I am honestly very surprised by the early Heralds. Moreso for your opponent, but even for yourself, you only had two Junk Dealers when you got your first. And you got it on a 5. Given how many crucial engine pieces like Merchant Guild and Catacombs depend on 5, that was definitely a mistake.
Generally, you only need villages-even good ones like Herald-after you have multiple terminals in your deck. With the Fortresses supporting, the Herald split wasn't going to make a difference. Besides, there was always the risk that Heralding into a Junk Dealer would make you trash something you didn't want to trash.
The engine looked strong here, and I think you definitely had a better opening than your opponent, but always look for opportunities to improve.

Thanks for the advice! I think I bought the herald on 5 before I realized that 3 junk dealers would be really nice. But I was thinking of using heralds to catch eachother or maybe a junk dealer and use them as villages. I wanted to use the fortresses more as something the junk dealers could trash as I had no way to get rid of them after their job was done. I seemed to be drawing my deck fine without catacombs, though I'm not sure why I didn't pick a couple up.

This worked out better than I thought and I didn't know what to do with myself. I probably messed around building way too much instead of ending it earlier but having about 40 coin tokens was just too much fun. I really just wanted more buys so I could buy a bunch of stuff because that's what Dominion is about, right? Playing a bunch of cool cards? Anyway, I'm sure you guys have some input about poor house type decks and I would appreciate it, as I haven't played many of them. Thanks.

EDIT: I wonder how rebuild would do against this engine?

Total newbie here but I'm in the middle of Lord of Chaos so I'm tempted...
I really want you to join, but I would advise you at least complete 1 normal game first.

Btw, that book has an awesome ending.

I don't know why I said Lord of Chaos. I'm actually in the middle of Fires of Heaven. This book is apparently when everyone slows way down, although I haven't had a problem with it yet.

I think the mere presence of Pirate Ship (And Thief and NB I guess) altars how you need to play
True, Altar is a great card to have in a Pirate Ship game since it trashes your Treasures and gains you Actions.

Not the first time people pick on my spelling. Damn you synonyms!

I think you mean homophones. Sorry to pick on your diction as well.

Damn you English!

You should really have a comma there. "Damn you, English!"

You really should stop talking. :P

You mean typing, right?

I think you mean you should stop dissecting my comments, right? I am a native English speaker! I swear!

Swearing is bad and you should really get yourself out of that habit.

It's bad to "make a solemn statement or promise undertaking to do something or affirming that something is the case"?

What if he swears never to swear again?

I interpreted that to say, "Losing is just a painful experience to be terminated wherein I learn nothing".

I've already stated maybe the winning move was to never go for Familiar to begin with.

You interpreted what I said, where interpreted is the key word.

Losing is not a painful experience. But losing when you never had a chance to win is. If I play chess, and with the first ten moves I take my opponent's Knights, a Bishop and Queen, I wouldn't be surprised if they resign. They can sit out the rest of the game, trying not to lose, but at this point they've probably learned all they can. The rest is just ass kicking.

I learned that maybe pure trashing can outrace Familiar (Although I do not think Doctor is good enough to do this). After I resigned, this game of dominion would have just been ass kicking. I don't find it interesting to play a game where I can't do anything due to 9 curses in my deck. Now, maybe you find it fun. Play it then. I don't, so why not move on to the next game? I've learned what I can. Don't always go for Familiar, especially when the only trashing is Doctor. Now I can move on, because there is no chance that I win this.

I'm with you. Sometimes certain games just aren't fair or fun. I just played this game,

http://dom.retrobox.eu/?/20140215/log.516ddc20e4b082c74d7cbc04.1392530089105.txt

in which I received 9 of the ruins while the chapel barely hit any of them. I immediately thought of this thread. Not as bad as your game but frustrating nonetheless.

I think that you mean you should stop dissecting my comments . . . .
That isn't always necessary.

Whoa, that sentence works on both levels!

Both levels? What are the levels then, huh?

"That isn't always necessary."

I mean that it works either if you interpret "that" to be a pronoun or literally the word "that". Since the word "that" is the subject that the pronoun "that" would be referring to. So it's ambiguous, and yet it's not!

And that's that.

3595
Great, thanks guys!

There is a rule that we can't talk about ongoing games at all, especially if we're in them, so you might have to wait a little for a response here.

Oh, sorry about that.

3597
I don't want to post a bunch of random questions here but I'm trying to follow along with the Mario mafia although I'm having a hard time understanding what most people are talking about. I know A Drowned Kernal is a newbie just like me so I wanted to see how he (she?) is doing. I kinda know what's going on here but can you guys explain this further? Specifically "claiming", and "L-1" and announcing putting someone at L-1. Thanks.

I think most people agreed that the claiming plan was a really bad idea for town, given the setup.

I also agree that a wagon stalling seems like a good indication that it's on scum, and chairs hasn't really given much of a response, so I suppose it's time I stopped waffling. Vote: chairs

Did you realise this was putting chairs at L-1 by the way ? Because you usually announce that, to make sure no one derphammers.

I'd like to reiterate : ADK, did you know you were putting chairs at L-1 earlier ?
