Dominion: Empires Previews / Re: Empires Bonus Preview #2: Crown
« on: May 16, 2016, 12:55:04 am »
One thing I'm happy about is that we're getting another Throne variant. Honestly, we have not gotten many Throne variants. Prior to Adventures, we just had 3.
4 if you count Scheme, but I agree TR and variants (almost) always make a kingdom more fun, and Crown more likely than others because it still works in money-based decks.

Everyone having access to the same cards is one of the big reasons why I love Dominion while I hate MTG.
(and yet I love Black Market too.)

« on: May 15, 2016, 12:35:24 am »
Beat my previous best in arena, yay!
went 5-3, previous best was 4-3.

Was also the most fun deck I've drafted in arena:
(Paladin class)
Avenge
Humility
Blessing of Might
Lowly Squire
Repentance
Selfless Hero
Worgen Infiltrator
Light in the Darkness
Argent Protector
Boneguart Lieutenant
Faerie Dragon (I never drew this card in any of the games)
Loot Hoader
Aldor Peacekeeper
Harvest Golem
Spider Tank
Squirming Tentacle
Blessing of Kings (2)
Infested Tauren
Keeper of Uldaman
Twilight Guardian
Colbalt Guardian (yeah I drafted this again, but the other choices were at least as bad)
Dragon Consort
Madder Bomber
Mukla's Champion
Drakonoid Crusher
Nerubian Prophet
Sunwalker
Faceless Behemoth  (never used)
Y'shaarj, Rage Unbound

In my first loss, I mullagined two ~6 cost cards and drew both 10 cost cards, and didn't draw any cheap minions for a few rounds.

(In the prize pack, I got Ragnaros, Lightlord. And for some reason, my arenadraft.com app recorded this run as 9-3.)

Variants and Fan Cards / Re: Really bad card ideas

More interesting:

Hibernate
Event
42 Debt

If this is your first turn of the game, gain 6 provinces and a duchy. Each other player gains a curse.

Your opponent has exactly 19 turns to get the rest of the VP... unless there are other options.

Here's my version:

Duke of Swamps
20 Debt.  Event
If you haven't gained any victory cards yet this game, gain all cards in the Duchy pile.

Hearthstone / Re: Tavern Brawl Discussion
« on: May 14, 2016, 03:20:46 am »
So I played more of this brawl because of the Tavern Brawl quest. The Doomsayer / Thoughtsteal suggestion on here sounded the most fun and turned out to be good. After it won all but one of the games needed for the quest and then lost twice, I won my last one with mirror image / fireball (which probably wouldn't win often, but I thought I'd try it).

1107
It looks to me like the wording of Enchantress would mean it would nullify everything on the first action played by other players, not just the on-play part.

It would be clearer if it said "Until your next turn, the first time another player plays an action card on their turn, they get +1 Card, +1 Action, instead of its on-play instructions." or "instead of its usual on-play effect."

1108
I guess just sticking "When you buy this, play it immediately" under a line was considered and rejected for some reason?
Having an effect when you buy a card works fine. Playing a card when you buy it means you played it (putting it into play) before gaining it, and may not even gain it. It's really wonky.

There was a lot of discussion of, could Noble Brigand be when-gain; Jester is an example of that being problematic. There was a version of Noble Brigand at one point that said, "when you gain this during your turn, play it." That gets rid of issues with e.g. Saboteur but leaves Jester.

Man, then we would've had a (non-treasure) action card that could be played during your buy phase!

This tavern brawl sucks. If you play a fun pair you get destroyed, if you play a cheap combo, you can win. And playing the games with a cheap combo is no fun at all.
I played several games before getting my pack, and I don't think I'll bother playing any more of this one.

What is Cultist even doing here?

People keep voting for it. It's like some sort of cult.

This is for most fun/favorite, right? Because I would obviously vote very differently if it's about power.

Yes. If it were about power then we could just throw out everything but Ambassador/Goons/Cultist/Mountebank and start from there.
I agree. How did Cultist beat Giant?  Giant is way more fun.

1 Ambassador
17 Ghost Ship

31 Relic
18 Marauder

3 Goons
19 Haunted Woods
really tough choice here. But I like Goons as a VP gaining card, not so much as an attack.

4 Cultist
20 Swamp Hag

5 Scrying Pool
21 Bridge Troll

22 Knights

7 Witch
23 Soothsayer

25 Jester
9 Swindler

My mage opponent just played Yog when I had 2 HP left. When the turn was over, there were no minions left on the board but I survived. I died next turn to a frost bolt.

« on: May 03, 2016, 12:56:22 am »
I always wish people would finish me off quickly if they have fatal damage on me instead of making their turn last longer when the winner is clear. So today I played an explosive trap when both me and my opponent had 4 HP left. My opponent had a 6/2 minion, but he attacked first with his 1/1 minion. My explosive trap kills all three of his minions and I win.

Attacking with the 6/2 minion first wouldn't have helped though, Explosive Trap triggers before the minion deals damage so all of his minions were going to die anyway. If your Secret had been a Bear Trap or a Freezing Trap, attacking with the 1/1 would have possibly allowed him to win whereas attacking with the 6/2 would not have, so your opponent actually made the correct play there.
oh yeah. it was nice that I had the explosive trap at just the right time anyway.

Also, you can (and should) resign as soon as you see that your opponent has lethal and there's nothing you can do about it.
I do occationally, and sometimes I resign when they have lethal and start doing things other than finishing me off. But I don't agree with 'should'. It seems like a lot of people would think it rude for you to quit without giving them a chance to finish you off. And then there's the possibility that you're mistaken about having nothing to do about losing as in the case I was taking about.

« on: May 01, 2016, 11:07:01 pm »
University is a tough one for me to know when it's worth it.  There have been times that I didn't think it was worth it and got beaten by someone who went for it, and other times I went for it and got beaten by someone who didn't.
(or maybe it's just cause I'm not very good at the game in general.)

I had the same thing happen the other day. The turn after playing Reno, he brought out his C'thun.

In Constructed presumablyou, since C'Thun isn't available in Arena.
oh yeah, I wasn't paying attention to which thread I was in...

Really?  I've only played about seven games today and seen C'thun played in about half of them.

I didn't see that one, but he had the one that gives C'thun bonuses every time a character is healed, plus two of the automatic ones that give C'thun +2/+2 as a battlecry.

I think they nerfed two silencers because they didn't want to have C'thun get silenced as often (which shouldn't be an issue when it's battlecry is bad enough).

EDIT: Silverback Patriarch should be made to cost $2. We lost one nice card that made it obsolete and gained two more (squirming tentacle and twighlight geomancer).

EDIT2: still not as OP as that guy who gives mages free fireballs for every spell they cast. How did he not get nerfed?

seriously?  this C'thun thing is OP. My opponent (priest) just played an 18/18 Cthun. game over.

You might find the Heartharena app more useful than the tier list, because it helps with synergies and curve and so forth.  The main problem is, the guys who calculated the lists and everything no longer work for/with HA, so I wouldn't bet on it after the patch, which... I guess is happening right now, isn't it?
Is the app free?  (And is it still being decently maintained after the patch?)  I went to the site, but didn't feel like making yet another username/pw at the time.

(another crappy 1-3 run.)
Abomination would be bad for a paladin then, because paladins tend to have lots of minions especially since I had violet teacher, murloc knight, and mukla's champion in that deck. Probably should've gone with ancient shade (I succombed to my first instinct and got colbalt guardian -partly because I had already drafted a tinkertown tech). Apart from Colbalt guardian, I drafted all cards that the tierlist said was the best choice of the three (or tied for best).

I won the majority of my games in the most recent Tavern Brawl (which someone said was both high-skill and high-luck), so I'm not that terrible at the game. I'm guessing my horrible arena winrate is a mix of lack of arena experience and bad luck (I've never gotten more than 4 wins and that only once). Also, out of about 9 tries, I've only gotten the option for paladin (my favorite class and one of the best for arena from what I've heard) twice.
