Another answer that technically fulfills your conditions: Hand has KC/KC/Wharf(or any other drawer)/2 other cards. Play KC/KC/Wharf and draw into all the cards needed to do the turn 5 8 colonies thing.

You don't have any cards in your deck so you can't draw any cards unless you gain them first.

I would think you could go crazy with a KK/KK/KK/University/Nobles hand by using the university to gain bridges and ironworks, then using the nobles to pick them up, then play the bridges and ironworks to gain more bridges/ironworks/nobles/kingscourt constantly drawing them due to ironworks-->green gain and nobles +cards.  I'm too lazy to actually figure this out though.

Also, is this cheating, you mentioned not starting with Ironworks/workshop in your hand and you may have just forgotten about university being pretty much identical

You have ambassador/province in hand, play ambassador to reveal a province but don't return it to the supply.  Each other player now gains a province depleting the province pile.  You win because you were more than 6 points ahead of every other player

Looking at tat's councilroom stats (http://councilroom.com/player?player=tat), he is 1 - 3 against ARTjoMS.  Assuming this ARTjoMS is Latvia who currently has a ranking of 41, there are at least a few games of a highly ranked player against him.

If you're that concerned about your level dropping, play under a different screenname with abandon.  No one will know it's you.

We will now. From now on I will assume that anybody I play who is not called "Eagle" is actually Eagle in disguise.

It might be me in disguise ;)   I've been known to do that at times.

No!  It's me!  ME ME ME!  Everyone is me!

No!  I am Spartacus!

Thank you for making my day!

Game Reports / Re: Retrospective Board Analysis
« on: July 25, 2011, 10:29:50 pm »
This is a tough one.  I guess I'd pray that I don't get a 5/2 start and open with remake/fishing village.  Remake estates into menageries with a warehouse or two.  I'd probably want to get a conspirator engine going but I would definitely want to pick up a tournament.  I'd really want to get the princess.  With no plus buy on the board, that would be helpful in end game situations.  Also, I think tournament would be essential for picking up duchies when the provinces start to get lower.  That's just my 2 cents.  Feel free to agree or disagree.

Puzzles and Challenges / Re: Grand Market

Do these two cards combine? If so, here's a solution for solo:
Quarry/Workshop

Sorry, they don't.  You play your workshop in your action phase, thus before quarries effect goes into play.  However, if you played a black market, you could play a quarry during your action phase, then play workshop and gain a grand market.  This required the use of a village though.

"well, just one game more...painted_cow has lost...okay, just one more..." :D

Ha ha... too true.

If you're going to remake them into silvers anyway, why not just do it right away?  You get rid of "dead" cards earlier and replace them with cards of monetary value.  I think this would help get to the $5 or 6$ level faster than leaving green cards in your deck.  Then once they are remade, you can work on the coppers.

On some of the newer US pennies, instead of the Lincoln memorial on the back, there is a shield.  Let's just say I think the US treasury is copying dominion.

Nice article and nice organization.  I think something regarding cellar and warehouse could be added.  You mention +action type cards, but in the absence of hand reducing attacks, these two cards help get through your junk and help put conspirators in your hand.

You don't need the chancellor, but by only buying one chancellor and one counting house, the golem strategy isn't compromised and you gain some deck cycling ability before the combo gets running.  I would imagine that this could help speed up the combo slightly (although I haven't actually tried any simulations).

Council Room Feedback / Win Rate vs. Turn Card was played
« on: June 16, 2011, 01:31:24 am »
The title pretty much sums up my idea.  Is there anyway this would be possible?  It would provide a lot information about the shuffling mechanic, especially in regard to the beginning portion of a game.

1315
It's pretty clear within this dominion community that reshuffling can have a huge effect on the game.  Using council room, I was able to observe the effect reshuffling can have on a game.  Specifically in regard to familiar because to purchase familiar, you must have a potion in your hand.  Below is a graph of win rate vs. turn card was gained (sorry I don't know how to integrate this into the post, you'll just have to look at the link).  At the beginning stages of the game, people will most likely have 1 potion.  This means that their potion was in their hand on the turn they gained a familiar.

http://councilroom.com/win_weighted_accum_turn.html?cards=familiar

From this graph, familiar is obviously a very powerful card.  But upon closer analysis, you can see dips in the win rate corresponding to turns 5, 7, and 9.  Coincidentally these turn numbers (especially 5 and 7) happen in which a reshuffle was necessary to complete the 5-card hand.  A familiar gained on those turns indicates that both the potion and the familiar purchased missed a reshuffle.  I looked at a few different cards, but familiar was the only one showing that trend.   I would guess that since most other cards don't depend on a single card (potion) to purchase they would not be that susceptible to bad shuffling (because you could purchase them anytime you had enough money).

Check the council room section for an idea related to the shuffling mechanic.

 Gardens  8)

Ahhhh... you would bring up that one.  The game where ambassador get's beat.  Definitely a good example of a very successful garden based game.

Other Games / Re: What other games do you enjoy playing?
« on: June 15, 2011, 05:00:56 pm »
Unfortunately my friends don't want to handle learning and playing different games all the time.  As of now I mainly play  dominion, catan (cities and knights over regular), colosseum, and ticket to ride.  If I had my way, I'd make them play any euro style game.

Regarding catan, does anyone play online at games.asobrain.com?  I haven't played in awhile, but feel free to send me a message if you feel like playing a quality game of catan.

Here's a related question - in a game with both Familiar and Sea Hag, when is it a good idea to open potion rather than Sea Hag and go for the Familiar? On the one hand, Sea Hag cripples your opponent early on, but on the other hand, Familiar is much more spammable and won't slow down your deck later on. Obviously which other alchemy cards are available and how many/ what type of villages are both factors to consider. Any thoughts?

Here's a game I recently played.  I opened seahag and managed to get a 6 / 4 advantage in the curse department while DG went for the familiar.  I don't know the probabilities on what would happen if more games were played.  But here's the game log if anyone's interested.

Game Reports / Re: Mint Fail
« on: June 15, 2011, 11:44:33 am »
I know that you said turn 3, but another epic fail is the turn 1 or 2 mint without any usable 2-cost cards. I myself made that mistake in my first mint game with a 5/2 start without something like lighthouse, embargo or pawn for their 2-cost card.  That early trashing just seems so good...

Feedback / Re: How to update the card rankings?
« on: June 15, 2011, 10:45:47 am »
I would recommend "The five best ____ cards, June 2011" idea.  Even though the old lists are outdated, they still provide useful information.  Maybe make a separate list for
"cards that used to be in the top 5".  That way the analysis you wrote for those cards isn't wasted.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Is the point counter cheating?
« on: June 15, 2011, 07:38:00 am »
In my opinion, I don't like using the point counter.  When playing with friends, they don't allow me to go through my deck and count up every single green card before I decide to buy the last province.  Why should I have that luxury when playing isotropic?  However, if someone wants to have a counter for VP chips, go for it, those don't remain hidden during play.

Feedback / Dominion Card Beneath User Name????
« on: June 14, 2011, 01:40:43 pm »
I don't know if there is somewhere else explaining this but I was just wondering what the dominion card name under each person's user name is.  I notice that it's pawn for most people and other 2-cost cards for a few others.  Does this change with how many posts a person makes and work it's way from the 2 cost to the 3 cost... all the way up to 7 cost?

Dominion Articles / Re: Deck Control
« on: June 14, 2011, 01:36:08 pm »
Cards that are in your hand or in play when you trigger a reshuffle mid-turn are omitted from that reshuffle, and will be lost for the next trip through the deck.

Thanks for bringing that up.  That is definitely stated more clearly than I originally wrote things out.

Another question that occurs to a less experienced player is how exactly you cultivate the skills you capsulize as 'playing meticulously'. Do you train yourself to remember the cards, or does the ability develop naturally with many games played? Do you create a mental map of your deck and check off the cards as they are played? And are you able to do it while continuing to play at the speed Isotropic games tend to go?

In regard to those questions, the simple answer is that practice makes perfect.  Play more games of dominion where you try to remember what cards have been played.  It's possible to do on isotropic, but it is more difficult.  DSTu makes a great point in regard to thinking about your last two turns.  However, once you get your deck to the point where you have >5 hands per reshuffle, you can't just think about the last two turns.  When this happens, I would recommend at the very least, keep track of the good stuff as you place it in your discard pile.  You can't really teach someone how to memorize cards, it's just something that you acquire with time and a sharp mind.
