Innovation General Discussion / Re: Figures in the Sand

You draw Figures cards when your opponent gains a standard achievement.  I am confused if it's drawing you a regular 7, though.

This was in a base game. But I guess that's probably how the bug got in.

what is up with drawing a card when your opponent achieves?

also, reveal on physics seem to be bugged now.

Completely off topic, but something that's come up a couple of times and bothered me:

When scoring your whole hand through bicycle, isotropic doesn't award Monument and I always expect it to. Is this right?

No. Scoring a card is different than exchanging cards between your hand and score pile.

It's just like how chancellor doesn't trigger Tunnel.

Innovation General Discussion / isotropic stuttering?
« on: April 10, 2013, 10:20:47 am »
Has anyone else noticed isotropic having several second pauses when no player input is needed?
It seemed to start a few days ago for me.

At first I thought maybe it was intended to stop the information leaks, but the times when it happens don't seem to make sense for that purpose.

A similar thing was discussed here, but some of the results are quite different. The data is from a couple weeks ago, so maybe trends have changed (as there are a lot more people playing now). Does that account for all the differences?

Interesting. One thing I noticed is that he saw no first player advantage, however in the data I analyzed the 2nd player won 57+/-1% of the time.

I don't see a contradiction here.

I could have worded that better - they saw an exact 50-50 split (don't know what their uncertainty was), while I saw a quite significant bias towards the 2nd player.

If I had to explain this, I would point out that a lot of the alphabetically early cards are inferior (Agriculture, Archery, City States, Code of Laws). 2nd player winning more, to me, does not imply 2nd player advantage as much as that a player who decides to meld one of those is more likely to be lower-skill and thus lose anyway.

Yes, I think this is probably right. Of course, they might not be low skill, they could just happen to have ended up choosing between Agriculture and Archery.

I am genuinely surprised that Tools beats Metalworking.

I should mention that the error bars on winningness are quite large - I don't know enough to calculate something rigorous, but I'd estimate sigma is about 0.01-0.02
See modified graph for errorbars

All the brouhaha over the value of writing got me curious.
Some numbers on initial melds (data from march, usual caveats apply, N ~ 16000)

Initial meld popularity:

EDIT: once more, with errorbars
Winningness (# won) / (# won + # lost) - 0.5:

Of course this may be inaccurate due to skill effects, when there is more data it will be interesting to rerun this broken down by player level.

Your wish is my command. Probably would be more interesting broken out by age, may do that later.

That's a pretty dick way to win

It's more of a dick way to lose.

Hence the second half of my sentence.

OP said they were in a grim situation, which makes me think their opponent probably wasn't being a dick but had an actual reason to be delayed.

That's a pretty dick way to win, unless your opponent was purposely taking a long time just to piss you off.

Probability of winning without a particular achievement: [p = (# in which winner didn't achieve X)/(# of games)]

People talking about the relative values of achievements got me wondering, so here's some quick and dirty calculations.
Data taken from the first 3 weeks of march, there will be some errors as I didn't bother figuring out how to exclude Echoes and solitaire games, but hopefully minor.
Total number of games was 13108.

Probability a player wins given they achieve a particular achievement [p = (# games where winner has X)/(# games where winner or loser has X)]:

Same data, grouped into 4 categories:

Which achievement the winner took first:

That being said, I think the circumstances are vastly different.  The licensing for Dominion was done by language, as it is for most games.  In other words, RGG gets the license to publish all english-language versions of Dominion regardless of where they are released.

WUT.
So we could have dominion back if we all learn to speak french???
