I like this sort of wacky self-synergy, but I am starting to think that you don't really need the action part anymore, and that this is starting to look like a feodum/gardens wannabe, so you might want to push it in a different direction?

Mountain Range - $5
+1 Card
Worth 1 VP per every 5 Coppers in your deck
When you trash this, gain 5 Coppers
If you gain this outside of your Buy phase,
trash it. When you play this, you may gain
a Copper, putting it into your hand

I know that this is a change in subject, and that you probably have/are getting a lot of these types of questions, so forgive me if I'm being rude, but is Prince supposed to be the last sort of official release of anything Dominion related, like Guilds was the last official expansion, or are you still going to release Dominion stuff, but just at a much more staggered pace?

Giving this card an entirely different flavor:
Mountain Range - $4
+1 Action
+2 Cards
+ 1 Buy
________
Worth 1 VP per every 5 Coppers in your deck
When you trash this, gain 5 Coppers
If you gain this outside of your Buy phase,
trash it

"you may not gain this outside your buy phase" is probably the sought wording. There are some differences with silverspawn's version (Haggler, horn of plenty, etc.), but I think it's cleaner.

Any wording needs specific ruling for possession interaction though, and maybe black market with my wording. Some trouble with trader too, maybe. Depending on the wording, you can buy it without gaining it, which is weird.

Maybe this is cleaner:

"when you gain this, if it's not your buy phase, trash it". I think this doesn't require specific ruling for weird card interaction.

Nice. I don't have (yet) Black Market IRL, although I probably have enough blank cards to test this out with BM in the same game. I'll hopefully be getting together with some friends tomorrow, so maybe then I'll actually have a chance of playtesting it.I wonder how this would work with Prince...

EDIT: I think it's important to add some sort of victory point effect to this card just to make it (slightly) more unique. Maybe something like: "Worth 1 victory point for every 5 Coppers in your deck"?

Ok, that would make sense. I just though it would be interesting to have a card where the only way you could gain it was through buying it, that's the only reason I thought of it in it's original form...

What do you think of changing the wording so it says something like: "When you buy this, gain two Coppers and put them on top of your deck. You may NOT gain this with Workshop or other such gainers."?

EDIT: Other than that, I think you do have a point.

Mountain Range - $4
+ 1 action
+ 2 cards
+ 1 Buy
_____________
 2 Victory Points
When you buy this,
gain two Coppers, putting them
on top of your deck.
You may not buy this if you have
any Coppers in play. You may not
use virtual coin from other Actions
to buy this card.

Thoughts?

Other Games / Race for the Galaxy?
« on: September 03, 2014, 07:27:07 pm »
Has anyone on the forum played Race for the Galaxy before? It looks like it might be an interesting game but I'd like a second opinion on it before I go out and buy it. I also know it has expansions, for those that own expansions for Race for the Galaxy, which one is the best one for beginners?

Thanks,
Trogdor

Having said that, I have also played hard mode games which have been fairly easy, so I'd say there's a fair bit of variation in how difficult games are.

I'd say in the hard mode games it really depends on your shuffle luck in the Player deck. Drawing the first Epidemic card on turn 1 has a lot different effect on the course of the game than drawing the first Epidemic card on turn 10 or 15.

Game Reports / Re: Game where opponent ignores Torturer and pays for it
« on: September 02, 2014, 02:16:55 pm »
Wouldn't mass upgrades into GM be better here?  Unless your opponent gives you half the curses before you get two upgrades then I actually see the attack part of torturer being pretty ignorable here.  (being the only the draw I see it still being pretty important)

Also why did you open silver/fools gold?  Wouldn't double fools gold be a better opening?

Your opponent lost because all he bought was fools gold and cities not because you burned him or something

I didn't think of the double FG opening. That probably would've been better. I guess you're right on why my opponent lost, but my Torturers helped ensure that he would at least have a harder time coming back by either a) in the later game at least partially sabotaging his next turn and b) giving him a Curse or two
I didn't really pick up the Torturers for the attack, I picked them up because their draw was very attractive and I knew I had the cities to facilitate the actions necessary to play multiple Torturers a turn at least a few times with the draw making for mega turns where I was able to easily pull ahead. The attack effect was an minor benefit.

"Pays for it" was a kinder way of saying my opponent was stupid for ignoring the Torturers

So, this is a game where, given the board, the obvious choice would be to go for a Torturer engine, especially since there is City, and given the early Fool's Gold rush, the Cities are likely to be (and were) very powerful. It wasn't necessarily always pretty, as I accidentally bought a Curse on a misclick, and my opponent's Lookout probably ended up doing more lategame harm than good (he trashed one of his Fool's Golds with it). Despite the mistakes, it ended in a CRUSHING 83-30 Burnination of Royal by Trogdor the Burninator.

Yeah it might've been a good idea for me to get a Salvager at some point, but I think the highest amount of money I ever had in 1 turn was $10 or $11, so even in the greening phase it wouldn't have done me much good

Except that I could have Salvaged Provinces into Provinces to make the game go much faster

Can I still sign up for the league or am I too late? I'm live in US Central Standard Time Zone (UTC -6?).
I would like to be placed in division E whatever that means.
I will say that there would be two potential problems for me:
1) I am in High School and sometimes will be quite busy with academic-related things and other extracurricular events/activities, so there might be times where I'm not able play scheduled league games
2) I do not currently have expansions on Goko

(My Goko username is Trogdor)

Thanks!

Game Reports / Scrying Pool + Minion

This game I just had is a great example of just how amazing Scrying Pool can be in getting key cards like Minion that you need throughout the game into your hand. I don't think I would've won had I not gotten that final Minion to do the deck cycling necessary to facilitate that final Province buy for the victory:

Dear My Opponent,
I'm sorry I opened 5/2 on a board with Mint/Fool's Gold, and you only opened 4/3
I'm not sorry I had 7-8 Fool's Golds within 4-6 turns after opening.
I am sorry that you raggequit as that rash action of yours denied me the ability to have some fun with 7-8 fool's golds floating around in my deck, as I'm sure it would've clogged at some point, as the board was not conducive to having large deck drawing engines.

I guess you're right on that, and in that respect it may be slightly better than Researcher in most situations, but I just haven't played enough with the Dispatcher to find that out yet

Personally, I've found (from the base game) that Medic, Operations Expert and Researcher have been the best role combination for a number of reasons:
1) The Medic is amazing!
2) The Operations Expert can quickly build a network of Research Stations that people can Charter a Flight to and from to immensely speed up movement around the board
3) The Researcher streamlines Sharing of Knowledge so much so that it can be used as a sort-of "middleman" shuffling needed City Cards between the other players to make cures come to fruition much easier
*I have yet to play much with the Dispatcher even though one of my friends (who introduced me to the game) seems to echo the above mentioned sentiments about it

Huh, funny you should mention the Operations Expert as being the butt of all your jokes, especially since in the second edition they added an ability allowing it to do direct flights to any city by discarding any city card at a Research Station. Even without the added ability I think that the ability to just pop out Research Stations whenever is extremely useful, especially when the Bio-Terrorist can sabotage them in On the Brink...

Contingency Planner allows you to basically keep an event card and use it a second time, removing it from the game when you've played it a second time. That's it's only power and compared to the rest of the roles in the game it basically sucks.

Anyone have any ideas for how to best use each role in Pandemic (including expansions) and best use combinations of roles?
Of particular interest: Has anyone found a way to make use of the Contingency Planner so that it's not completely pointless? It (the Contingency Planner has become the butt of all Pandemic jokes among me and my small group of friends that I play Pandemic with)

Thanks,

"I'll Twiddle your Bone Flute."

No?
A) I don't get it
B) It has to be a reference to an actual Dominion card that could be misinterpreted by a non-Dominion player
