Dominion Articles / Re: Hunting Grounds
« on: March 21, 2015, 04:10:34 am »
If there are no objections, I'll put this up on the wiki?  Think it's in good shape now.

I don't know if I exactly object, but I still don't think the article is, uh, very helpful? I'd actually prefer either of Stef's versions.

I like the article as it is. Yes, you always can do better, but its definitely a good article with a lot of useful information. Don't forget the most players are not L40+ (including Wero) and haven`t played thousands of games.

I felt like the feedback was quite harsh partially and also felt a little bit ashamed when i saw that some better players were making fun of this article in a stream chat. In my eyes this is a little bit disrespectful to Wero, who made an effort with this article.

Actually, that you are extremely unlikely to hit 5 again that shuffle is why I particularly dislike masterpiece over wharf on turn 5. Your deck has 1 silver, 4 copper, and 5 estate/curses. I do not consider that "a good chance" to hit 5 :)

Havent tracked that exactely neither ingame nor at posting. Ingame my feeling was like that. And yes, given that fact i think wharf>masterpiece at turn 5 as well.

If you are going for a wharf masterpiece thing then open feast/silver against the sea hag. There's also a possibility that you might want a journeyman before a wharf as it could deliver better masterpiece hands, if that's important.

Yeah, opening silver/feast is a point. I almost never have an idea whether silver/silver or feast/silver is better. In the first case you can avoid 4 and 4 on turn 3/4 to a high percentage. I also had games with feast on turn 5 colliding all over the game, but due to the hag here feast/silver could be better. Dont like the idea of journeyman.

I feel pretty comfortable with the masterpiece on turn 5 with a good chance of hitting the 5 for wharf in turn 6. Having no wharf after my 2nd shuffle was pretty devastating for my strategy there. I agree that 2 hags should be too much on this board whatever the opponents strategy is.

One hag being 2 to 1 favourite over 0 hags seems too much for me, but i have absolutely no feeling in this setup for that i have to admit. Thats the reason why I posted :) And yeah, I agree, he had some big misbuys in there.

Code: [Select]
Masterpiece, Armory, Bishop, Feast, Sea Hag, Silk Road, Explorer, Journeyman, Venture, Wharf

I opened double silver here with the plan to go into Wharf BM with 2-3 early Masterpieces and green after the masterpieces and 3-4 wharfs pretty early due to the presence of silk roads. I had unfortunate shuffles and the opponents sea hag did an awful good job in discarding my good cards all the time. I lost this game.

How would you have opened? Is opening double silver arguable or is opening Sea Hag/silver simply superior?

Sometimes it's fine to trigger a bad reshuffle with Minion if your discard pile only has 4 or 5 junk cards in it; usually that hand will be Minioned away by your opponent.

I wouldn't rely on this against good and observant players.

On Topic. If you want one copy of a card (e.g. Woodcutter for 2nd buy) in your deck anyway, but its not the optimal way to buy it right now (e.g. because silver is now slightly superior to woodcutter), its often good not to buy it on the first occasion that occurs. Most of the time its more precise to buy that card later and optimize your chances of a good/fast deck now.

going live just about now

Wow, wow, wow. What a thriller game 6 was. Watched the video today with popcorn on my couch. Thanks to both for this exciting match

Announcements for signups for Tournaments (World Cup, Gokodom, etc.) and new Seasons of the Dominion League would be cool. As well as announcements and links to the Final matches if they get streamed.

Is this going to replace the "League Streaming" thread where we said when we were going live in the past?

Yep

My World Cup 11 (not looking too strictly at their positions):

Neuer
Lahm - Hummels - Vlaar - Blind
Neymar - Mascherano - Müller - J. Rodriguez
Robben - Messi

I think Vlaar really played a terrific and solid World Cup, it was sad to have him miss the first penalty. Neuer is not necessarily the best goalkeeper (I think it's close with Navas, Ochoa and perhaps Howard), but he is super solid. Hummels has been quite important and Blind I don't known, could put Boateng here I guess..

Messi hasn't been stellar, but he has been important and that's good enough.

This is my World Cup 11 so far:

Navas
Boateng - Hummels - Thiago Silva - van Buyten
Mascherano- James - Cuadrado
Robben - Benzema - Neymar

Bench: Neuer - Sokratis, Maza, Garay, Vlaar - de Jong, Valbuena, di Maria- Müller, Messi, Alexis Sanchez

61
Unfortunately influencing the referee is standard and part of the game these days. I agree that he tends to overdo it. Dont like that either.
In one point i strictly disagree. He is the most individualistic player i know. And thats no exaggeration. He has such an unothodox and brilliant instinct for travel paths on the field. Thats a skill you cant see at any other player and cant be learned. The media invented years ago when he becomes good an own word for him called "Raumdeuter". Its hard to translate, it means that he is an interpretor of room and sees room and gamesituations before they are there. Thats unique and the reason why he became such a good player although his technique is way under average

62

Müller is human scum yes.

Do you really know what you are talking about? He is definitely not. In germany Müller is the most loved player (and thats mainly not because he plays successful) and a great example for all kids. In his interviews and as a person generally he is so down to earth,  very very authentic and very funny as well. In his personality and attitude he is kind of a "Anti-Star", who could easily be a Handy-Seller. He is the exact opposite of Ronaldo, Mario Götze and all the other adapted, vain football players and he doesnt care about how he looks like in his playing style. Müller always gives everything for his team and is there when it comes down to the big games and never gives up. You really should adjust your opinion in that point.

Dominion League / Re: Challenger/Champion Discussion
« on: July 05, 2014, 03:14:53 pm »
dunno, is it fair if everyone votes? I'm not very fond of the idea, but well I'm not in the A leauge. If i were, I would very much dislike it, but as is I feel that the guys in the A league should decide.

I think its better if everybody has the chance to vote. You have a better decision base if 40 people vote, than max. 6 ppl are voting. If the Challenger/Champion-System gets installed, it should be for several seasons. And a 3-3, 3-2, 2-3 outcome of the vote has no value, especially if you see that the A League can have a completely different player pool with other opinions in, lets say, season 4. So, why not letting a C or D-player vote, who can potentially make it to that system in one of the later seasons? And as ADK said, its non-binding.

For my taste, i share the opinion of Mic Qsenoch. I personally prefer playing 5 matches a 6 games against different players a bit more than 20 games against the same person. But for sure I won't pass the chance to play for the crown if i surprisingly get the chance become League Champion

Edit: @SCSN Challenger/Champion gets my vote if there is a chance to have more external commentary (like yours with Mic at Gokodom finals, my favourite stream so far) ;)

Also I couldn't find the justification for use of game points over match points.

A good example is League D2, where Alan Malloy promoted with 2 wins - 1 tie - 2 losses, while kylar did not with 4 wins and just 1 loss. So whats better?
Both systems have their advantages and disadvantages and its basically a matter of taste what you prefer. I like the actual system a lot, cause I like it that every single game counts and it turned out that in a lot of cases the league remains exiting until the last match and even game is played. In my case for example, I had already played 27 games and 3 games were remaining against AI. If I could have won all 3 it was still possible to win my division, if I would have lost all 3 it was still possible to demote (depending on AI's last match against PG).

So, I wouldnt change too much there, but can see your point. So, why not combine best of both worlds? It may be worth considering, to maintain the point system as it is and give a bonus point as reward for a match-win.

66
Generally I like Forager/Silver opening here most. I think you dont need more than one silver. Forager/Jack is the more agressive way and should be close to that as jack has some synergy with forager/necro and can be faster with with good draws, but the risk of bad draws is also bigger. As played your opponent didnt get punished by his draws. I think Forager/Silver is slightly better than Forager/Jack.
With Minion on board,  I think you dont want a 3rd forager at turn 5, as it increases the chance of non-5-turns, better buy just a marketsquare instead.

The rest gets divided between the people that ended #2 in C divisions. Currently they're all very close to each other on the leaderboard.

If it becomes relevant, that a free slot will be given to a #2 of the C devisions, i'd rather see the player with the most total points promoting (or in this case the player with the best average score, because C1 has only 5 players remaining) instead of the best on the Leaderboard.

I think its more fair/consistant letting a player promote based on a criterion, that belongs to the given performances in the League.

Why does England always play so poorly?

From the time I've been following the world and euro cups ('94), England has only made it to the semis in their own country ('96) and no further than the quarter-finals in any other cup.

Because were just rubbish, too much one dimensional thinking at the lower levels means English players can't adapt or do anything except what they are taught
Maybe too few English youth players are coming through because the clubs are owned by rich playboys who just buy any (non-English) player they want.

England is overrated in this World Cup as always. If i see that people rated them before WC on one level with teams like Italy and over teams like Colombia or the Netherlands, I just can laugh about that. That youth players dont get enough games in premier league is a point but not the mainpoint imho.

I think the big problem in English football is the youth player education. Almost all English youth player academies promote the same type of players. The attention in education leans towards speed and strength. These two abilities are essential in football, but thats not enough anymore in modern football. It was often good enough until the 1990's, but today you need to be able to be very good in tactics and especially technics to compete with World Class. Somehow its part of the mentality in sports (and maybe even the societies of that countries tends to that) of the most of english speaking countries to tend to speed and strength. If you see teams like England, Australia and USA, they have good players, but their game is too uninspired, too predictable and in some way too straight forward to compete with the best.

As said, the main reason for the failure of England in the past is in my eyes, that the english youth player education missed the progress in modern football and that for the last 25 years. The focus is still on the essential skills that you need in football, but too less on the skills you need to be Tier I. Germany had exactely the same problem in late 90's and early 00's, but there the old men in decision functions were able to change their thinking and built up a first class education system on national level and on club level as well. So, its doable, for such a great country with that passion for football like England is, anyway. But it has to be done.

I think the first season went very well so far. For me it was a lot of fun to play competitive dominion in this format and i enjoyed it a lot. And its my impression, that almost all other players enjoyed it a lot as well, it simply is a well thought-out and well executed format.

Its hard to set up strict rules regarding promotion and demotion, if not all matches get played. The situations of the groups will be very different, so will be the reasons for not finishing. I think, it would be best to set up some "soft rules" like Stef did with the guidelines in the Rules&Regulations-Thread.

I suggest to remove all players, who only played 2 games or less (<40 % or <50% of the games is also reasonable) . To be fair regarding de-/promotion, the results of the matches played by those players should be removed as well. It will be often the case, that Player X was able to play a match against the removed player, while player Y wasn`t, although he tried to contact him.

I would also ban these removed players for one season from league. As the active players shouldnt suffer from the inactive ones, the removed player should count as a demoted player. So in Division C1 where already one player has been removed (5 player division now), only #5 in the final standings should demote.

Edit: If two active players dont manage to play their match, the standings shouldnt be affected by that. For example if MX and Markowkette (sry to both for using you in my example  ;) ) in B2 wouldnt manage to play their last match in time, they just dont get any points out of their match and have to live with 0 points. 5 weeks is just a long enough period to play the match for active players. The current standings would be the final one in this example and yed should promote with 17.5 points.

The Spain Squad is still good, but the players got 4 years older and have already won everything. That reminds me on the performances of Italy 2010 and France 2002. Both were the World Cup Winners at that point and went out as 4th in their groups with poor and uninspired performances. Spain has the quality to promote, but the players arent hungry for success anymore

Finally the Belgians are kicking off, expecting a lot from them.

algeria - belgium running. belgium has a lot of really good players, but do they have a good team? not sure about that, to be honest i doubt that. i know it was the nr. 5 pick of a lot of ppl before WC started (behind Brazil, Argentina, Spain and Germany). I just dont believe that all this talented players can be formed into a team which is capable of reaching semifinals+
