Dominion General Discussion / Re: Homage to the Best Card

This thread now has 253 pages!
It seems swingy. It's either a Peddler (with edge cases both ways), which we've agreed is worth $4 or so, or it's nothing at all when you get unlucky. So when you get yours on turn 3, and I get mine turn 4, hooray for me! Counting House has the same problem, but at least there when it pays off, it lets me have a crazy turn; here I'm gambling just to get a Peddler. It's much less swingy than a menagarie isn't it?
Border Peddler - $8*
+1 Card, +1 Action, +1 Coin
----------------------------
During your Buy phase, this costs 2 less per Action card you have in play, but not less than 0.
When you gain this, gain a card cheaper than this.
Action
I'm not sure how it would play out. Usually you'd want to buy it at $6, $4, and $0, but not $2. Weird.
I would definitely host one. Although I'd like us to take a shot at making our own Treasure Chest expansion, which means that we should wait until Guilds is released.Well, we can start that right now by designing cards one by one.
Wait, are we seriously saying Inn is a trap?
I thought it was just an Admiral Akbar thing...
Actually I think removing Knights makes sense. After all, there is no card named "Knight". Half of the knights are named "Sir xxx" and the other half are "Dame xxx". How can you fit them into your alphabetical games at all?
Every pile has a pile name, even if it contains differing cards. The example showing this is Ruins; the text of the Looters says "gain(s) a Ruins", which is the pile name. For every pile where all cards are the same, the pile name is the same as the card name. The pile name for the Knights is Knight. I would alphabetize them as that.
Personally, I think vanilla half harem is fine. They can't all be the best card ever.
Also, concubine.
I think the problem is the cost. $3 is simply too much, but at $2 it would be strictly better than Estate. It is a card that, if you started the game with, you would want to trash out of your deck, just like Coppers and Estates. The only 2 times you should ever be willing to buy it are 1) times that you would otherwise buy Copper (pretty rare) and 2) times that you would otherwise buy an Estate (only towards the end of the game).
Sure if the game is close to over, and you have exactly $3 or $4 to spend, you choose it over Estate. But otherwise I'm just pretty sure this would be purchased far less often than Explorer, Scout, etc.
When you would otherwise buy Copper, you still probably would not buy a Half-Harem (HH). When do you buy Copper?
1. Coppersmith, Counting House or Apothecary strategy -- doesn't work with HH.
2. You just want to hit $5, e.g. for Duchy/Duke -- Silver will be better for you.
3. You just want lots of cards, e.g. for Gardens -- the reason why Copper is attractive is because it costs $0 so you can use up all your +Buy; HH won't let you do that.
Speaking of Scout, this has great synergy with Scout.Personally, I think vanilla half harem is fine. They can't all be the best card ever.

So it makes Scout better?
On a more serious note, i think it's possible to find something that will make Concubine (i second that name) okay. Maybe not a Reaction, but maybe an on-gain-advantage or something like that. Free Silver for everyone, maybe?
What about this:
Dame Looter
Each other player gains a Ruins and put it on the top of his deck.
Each other player reveals the top 2 cards of his deck, trashes one of them costing from $3 to $6, and discards the rest. If a Knight is trashed by this, trash this card.
Action - Attack - Knight - Looter - $5
I don't like it. So the net effect is that it's a Knight that only searches 1 instead of 2 to trash. I don't like that on one hand, it really should just say that, but on the other hand, the other wording would make it less consistant with other Knights. But as it is, it just seems like an awkward trick to change the attack.
Then there's issues with the attack only attacking one thing to begin with. It's probably too weak, and definitely too swingy. Then there's cases where searching only 1 instead of 2 can actually be worse for the person being attacked. Sir Martin revealed Goons and Silver? I trash the Silver. If you had played Dame Looter instead, I would be forced to trash the Goons.
Tips for the "Dominion" Game"...however, the card you play may allow you to play another turn, such as in the case with the Village, where you can play two additional turns..."
"The Village is the best card to collect in Dominion because it gives you plus 1 card and plus 2 action..."
Taking additional turns, well, that's powerful! But now which advice should I take, should I piledrive Villages or Bureaucrats?
