Forum Games / Ultimate Werewolf Legacy
« on: March 28, 2018, 12:11:23 pm »
Bezier Games has announced Ultimate Werewolf Legacy, available this August. https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/206715/ultimate-werewolf-legacy

It looks interesting! I'd be interested in playing it in person, but I'm skeptical about being able to get the consistent player count to play the game. The game is played in several Chapters. Each Chapter has 3 games meant to be played in a single session with the same group, but you can change players throughout sessions. I think it would be most fun to play with the same group across all chapters, which would be extremely difficult offline -- it could be possible online, though!

I have no idea how well the game will port to forum play, but it's definitely worth keeping an eye on and could be something we try here once the game is available.

Section 1: Player conduct

101. All players must always abide by all the rules currently in effect, in the form in which they are currently in effect.

Section 2: Rules and rule changes

201. Whatever is not prohibited or regulated by a rule is permitted and unregulated, with the sole exception of changing the rules, which is permitted only when a rule or set of rules permits it.

202. If two or more rules conflict with each other, the one with the lowest ordinal number takes precedence.

203. A rule change is the enactment, repeal, or amendment of a rule.

204. No rule change may take effect earlier than the moment of the completion of the vote that adopted it. No rule change may have retroactive application.

205. Each proposed rule change shall be given a number for reference. The number for enacted rules shall be the next successive integer (with the first number in each section ending with 01) in the section the active player deems appropriate. This need not be a section currently in use. If the section the proposed rule change will be in does not have a name, the active player shall name the section as part of the proposal. The section will receive that name if the proposal is approved.

206. If a rule is repealed and reenacted, it receives the number of the proposal to reenact it. The first time a rule is amended, .1 is added to the end of its number. Any subsequent time it is amended or transmuted, the number after the point is increased by 1.

207. When a rules change is approved, any part of it inside square brackets takes immediate effect, and then is removed along with the square brackets.

Section 3: Turns

301. Players take turns in player order, returning to the top of the list when necessary. The player whose turn it is currently is the active player. When the active player’s turn ends, the next player’s turn starts immediately.

302. In a turn, the active player may submit up to two draft proposals and one final proposal, in that order.

303. Once the active player has submitted a final proposal, each player may vote. Players cast votes by typing xxx Vote: Yes or xxx Vote: No in the game thread, where xxx is the proposal number. Before the turn is over, players may change their vote. Only the most recent vote by each player is valid.

304. A turn is over only when a player who is eligible to do so declares it to be over. The current player may end the turn at any time. Any other player may end the turn if one of the following is true:
1) More than 48 hours have passed since the start of the turn and no draft or final proposal has been submitted,
2) More than 48 hours have passed since the last draft or final proposal, or
3) A final proposal has been submitted and a majority of players are voting the same way.
Any rule which prevents players from ending the turn takes precedence over this.

305. At the end of a turn in which a final proposal was submitted, it is approved if a majority of players were voting Yes when the turn ended, or if the turn lasted more than 48 hours after the final proposal was submitted, and more players were voting Yes than No when the turn ended. When a proposal is approved, the rule change takes effect immediately.

Section 4: Joining and leaving the game

401. A new player may join the game by posting /in in the game thread. If a final proposal has not been submitted in the current turn, they join the game immediately. Otherwise, they join the game at the end of the current turn. Either way, they are placed before the current active player in the player order.

402. A player may leave the game at any time by posting /out in the game thread. They are immediately removed from the game and no longer subject to any rules within.

Section 5: Roles

501. Each role described in this section must be occupied in order for any player to end a turn.

502. A player who has a role may vacate that role at any time. If this occurs, or if a player with a role leaves the game, the role goes to the first player to volunteer for it in the game thread.

503. The Scribe is responsible for keeping public documentation for the current ruleset, all previous rule changes, and all other publicly known gamestate information.

Section 6: Ranking

601. If any player makes a proposal that gets accepted, they gain one ranking point. If any player fails to make a proposal during their turn, they will lose one ranking point (negative numbers are allowed). All players will be ranked according to the number of ranking points they have, with the largest number going first. Ties are allowed. The current ranking along with the ranking points of each player are posted by the Scribe after each turn.

Non-Mafia Game Threads / Hanabi III (Game Over - 21 points!)
« on: April 30, 2014, 07:45:26 pm »
Hanabi

A review

Full Rules

Hanabi is a co-operative game; one where the players do not clash, but work as a team to achieve a common goal. They play the part of inattentive / drunk pyrotechnics experts, who accidentally mixed up the powders, wicks and rockets of a large fireworks display. Since the presentation is about to start, this has caused a bit of a panic! The team needs to help each other so the spectacle doesn't turn into a catastrophe!

The objective is to play cards 1-2-3-4-5 (in order) in each of 5 suits (colors). In each suit, there are three 1s, two 2s, two 3s, two 4s, and one 5.

Each player will have a hand of 4 cards. Hands are secret, with the twist that each player can see all the cards except his own. Each player will have a QT that all other players have access to, with the cards in the hand in slots A-D. This will be updated each time a card is played or discarded.  (If you play card B on your turn, then you will draw a card and it will go the card B slot.) There will be absolutely no discussion and/or communication in these QTs.

On your turn, you have three options:

1. Play a card (A-D), and then draw one. Your play is legal if the card is the next numerically in its suit - you may not skip or duplicate numbers. If the play is illegal, the card is discarded and the team receives a strike. 3 strikes = game over.

1a. If you play a 5 legally to complete a suit, you gain a bonus clue token for the team. If you have completed the fifth suit, you win!

2. Give information. You may discard a clue token (the team starts with 8) .  You identify all cards of a suit or number that one other player has. You must identify all matching cards.

This means that if person X has this hand:

R1 R2 Y1 G1

You can give the following clues:

A/C/D are 1
A/B are Red
C is Yellow
D is Green

You cannot give this clue:

A is a 1

3. Discard a card, gain a clue token, and then draw a new card. The new card will be placed in the same slot from which the previous card was discarded.

If a player draws the last card from the deck, each player has one final turn (including the player who drew the last card).

Any form of in-game discussion other than posting your action is not allowed. And of course, do not PM the other players in the game.  You in fact should never need to PM anyone.

Final Scoring:

The final score is the total number of cards legally played:

0-5 Horrible! The crowd is booing!
6-10 Poor. Barely any applause.
11-15 Honorable, but nobody will remember it.
16-20 Excellent! Charms the crowd.
21-24 Extraordinary! Engraved in the crowd's memories.
25 Legendary! The crowd is speechless with stars in their eyes

Players
1. Ghostofmars
2. Jimmmmm
3. Teproc
4. Watno

Strikes: 0/3
Clue Tokens: 8/8

Played
Red: (none)
Green: (none)
Blue: (none)
Yellow: (none)
White: (none)

Discard: (none)

Deck: 34 cards

Other Games / Why is Tichu so popular?
« on: January 15, 2014, 04:50:43 pm »
Something that I've never understood is why Tichu is so popular, yet other similar card games never get touched by the boardgamers I'm around. Many people at the board game night I attend love Tichu, and eat it up and play it several times a week, spending quite a bit of time on the game. To me, Tichu's an alright game, but I have never understood the almost universal love for the game.

I don't mean to disparage Tichu -- it's definitely a good game -- but I just don't understand its popularity, especially at the expense of similar games. Can someone who's really into Tichu explain why it's the trick-taking cardgame, and the only one that a lot of boardgamers will even touch? It has never made much sense to me...it's a pretty good game, but I don't think it's heads and shoulders above all other similar games, yet the amount it gets played seems to indicate that everyone else thinks it is.

Mafia Ruleset Changes in RED
Game Rules:

General Gameplay and Etiquette:
1. You may not quote private Moderator-supplied information (either real or fabricated) of any kind.  Paraphrasing (for role claims, etc.) is acceptable.
2. There is to be NO personal communication outside of the forum postings unless your role PM specifically allows it.  Mafia members may communicate at night and during the confirmation stage.
3. Roles with actions will not be able to submit an action during the confirmation stage
4. Players with a night action may choose to submit their action during the previous day, in case they will not be around during the night phase. They may later change this action up until the night deadline.
5. Any player with an action may instead submit a “No Action” PM to let the Mod know that you do not want to perform your expected action that Night phase.

Voting, Deadlines, and Player Death:
1.Whomever has the most votes currently on them at lynch deadline is lynched.
1b. If there is a tie at deadline, the player with the most "unique" votes will be lynched. "Unique" votes are counted by the mods concurrently with live votes, and reflect the number of different voters who have voted for that player.

2. Once you have reached a simple majority no further unvoting will change someone’s fate.  Further votes will also be ignored.
3. Once a player is lynched the game enters twilight until I post a death scene; all players including the one who was lynched may continue to post during twilight.
4. Please submit votes as: Vote: PlayerName.  Votes will NOT be counted if they are not bold or do not follow this syntax!  Obvious abbreviations or nicknames will be counted so long as they are unambiguous.
5. Please submit vote revocations as either Unvote: PlayerName or Unvote. Unvotes are not necessary before changing votes.
6. You may Vote: No Lynch - a simple majority of these vote types are required to send the game to Night phase without a lynch.
7. This game will have 24 HOUR deadlines.  If a player or No Lynch does not have a simple majority at deadline, the player with most votes currently on them will be lynched, and the game will go into the next night.
8. This game will have 12 HOUR nights. If a player does not have his or her night actions in after 12 hours, a random target will be selected for him or her.
9. Once you are killed (either via lynch or kill) you may no longer post. This means that you do not even get a “Bah” post. The dead in this game are silent.
10. Do not edit or delete posts.  We don't want some players having more information than others.  If you want to clarify posts, feel free to double post.

Miscellaneous/Mechanics:
1. Bold, color text is reserved for the Mod.  No invisible/small text is allowed, nor is cryptography.
2. If you have an issue/problem with the game, please PM the Mod privately.  Do not post issues/complaints in the game thread.
3. The Mod may make mistakes - please point out any mistakes gently.  Mistakes will be corrected where possible, but sometimes mistakes are made that cannot be reversed.  These will stand as final to be commiserated over after the game.
4. Please bold all requests to the Mod so that they don’t get missed.
5. Rule violations will be dealt with according to their severity, up to and including a Modkill.

The Golden Rule:

Please remember that this is a game and your main objective is to have fun! Be considerate of each other, don’t get personal, and enjoy the game. Most or all of you have taken the Civility pledge, if you haven't I suggest you do.

Introductions / Hello everyone
« on: March 05, 2013, 03:07:43 pm »
Hi everyone,
My name is Ben, and I'm a college student in the United States. I've been on here lurking for awhile, but figured I'd make a post to say hello!

I've been playing dominion for awhile -- I got the base game about 2 years ago, and played it for awhile, but my addiction to the game started when I found dominionstrategy and isotropic about a year ago. I've been lurking the forums for awhile now, but figured it was time to finally post and say hi.

For board games I own Dominion, Seaside, Settlers of Catan, Ticket to Ride, and 7 wonders, but have been interested in getting into some more intensive gaming lately (unfortunately, finding time and people to play with is difficult...) Just bought Through the Ages but haven't had time to try it out yet.

Apart from board games, I'm a huge follower of the English Premier League, and I have the same interests as any normal American college student :P

Ben
