Well, Copper junking is a rather annoying attack, and combining it with discard attacks is mean. But you give it in hand, and if somebody's lucky, he may actually get mostly a benefit from this. This makes the card possibly annoying and under guarantee very swingy. The fact that it doesn't give the player any benefit just joins in on that. I dare say that cost isn't the cards main problem.

Gain two bad things as fodder when gaining a $4 card? That seems... established.

Assemble is a new card. It's more like "dissemble", actually, but good luck finding images for that :P
Actually, it's more like "disassemble". "Dissemble" is something completely different.

Ah, i didn't know that. Thanks.

I would use the old wording, yes.

Changed it back, thank you.

Also, here's Vampire:

Certainly not the best card here, but it's my take on the Self-Curse concept and an older version was pretty popular in my gaming group. Figured i could just as well pick some art and post it here.

Not really a criticism, rather a question: Isn't it rather untypical for Remodels to give a vanilla bonus? Not that i mind. I mean, there's certainly no law against that.

I think it's pretty atypical, yes. But Tinker is first and foremost a deck thinner. Also, it's not unusual for other TfB cards to have vanilla bonuses (Bishop, Apprentice).

But of course it's really a matter of practicality. I think Tinker would be too weak at any cost without the +$1 bonus. I could add a non-vanilla bonus instead (like Ambassador has), but the card already has a concept (tokens-for-remodel) and doesn't really want another one. Nor does it want more words. I was considering +1 Cards (or +2 Cards for $5), but I prefer that you know what your trashing options are before you play the card.

Nah, i think it's fine the way it is. As i said, no criticism. It's just something i never before really thought about.

I got a card that costed 4,
but when i play it, then what for?
I really feel that you should know,
that for the Scout you shouldn't go.

Does it trash cards? It never trashs cards.
Does it gain cards? No it never gains cards.
Does it draw cards? It NEVER draws cards.

It does nothing, the Scout does nothing!

Played in Androminion, so no log

Can't you log your games in Androminion? I certainly can. It's not neceaarily the typical format (i don't know anything about that), but i know it's possible.

I like Tinker. The art is nice, too. It's really funny how many words there are in that "create" family to make cards of :)

Politician seems very... political.

I don't see where you draw that connection. :P

On a side note, i would be glad to find a better option than the +1VP one, just so the card doesn't ask for material that's otherwise not needed. There's trashing, gaining, drawing, accelerating and i wanted one that gave no economy boost at all. I pondered a few alternatives, including "set aside a Victory card in his hand during the end of the game", "gain a Copper in hand", "discard his hand and draw 5 new cards", but they were too redundant to the existing options.

I believe with the new wording of Assemble, you cannot gain two copies of the same card, as only the top card in each pile is "in the Supply" for this kind of purpose. Same way you can't use Band of Misfits as Sir Martin if he's buried in the Knights pile.

I think with the old wording, you gained a card costing up to $3 more than the card you trashed, then gain another card costing up to the remainder. If there is no such card, you'd gain nothing, but there almost always will be either a Copper or Curse to gain.

Would you recommend going back to the old wording? I'd like to give the option of gaining duplicates and wasn't aware the wording wouldn't allow it. Maybe it would be sufficient to go back and only clarify the actual order in a faq - given it will matter very rarely.

I like Assemble, but it's gonna need some clarification. Do you choose both cards before you gain either of them?

Good point. I imagined that you would first gain one card costing up to $3 more and after that gain another one costing up to whatever is left, but couldn't find a nice wording for that - i guess i forgot to make it clear in either way  :-[ Anyhow, i think it should only matter if Curses and Coppers both are out, but of course that can happen. Either option works for me, it's all about which wording is better.

I have this: "Trash a card from your hand. Choose two card in the supply that together cost up to $3 more than the trashed card. Gain them"
A bit lengthy, though.

Edit: Changed wording :) It now makes clear you choose both cards, then gain them.

So if i get this right, it's either a Silver or a Horn of Plenty for cards you have. I assume it's balanced, but i get the feeling that this is just "Mint for actions" with a bit of added complexity (Treasure type, coin production, discard clause...) so they are more different. The basic concept is compelling, if a little redundant, but the stuff beyond it feels... added.

Well, the fact that it's a Treasure matters because otherwise you'd be unable to duplicate terminal Actions without a village. Yes, you could have "play an Action then gain a copy of it" or some such, but the Treasure is more flexible in the same way Scheme is: you don't have to always collide the Magic Mirror with the Action you want to duplicate; you can draw the Mirror later.

I'm aware that the fact it's a Treasure buffs the card by a fair bit. Not only will you never draw it dead, but the point when you draw it doesn't matter, either. I just feel it's unnecessary for the card idea. Not that i never did a treasure that couldn as well have been an action... And you have a point, HoP is a pretty un-treasure-y official card that seems to have that type for buffing mostly. Anyhow, my alternative would have just been Mint with a +action attached:

+1 Action
You may reveal an Action card from your hand. Gain a copy of it.

Edit: Fixed a double negative.

That is a lot of +Actions.

Interesting point... I guess Assassin doesn't really need to be one of those. There were some more cards that didn't have +actions, but i had no images.

After some search here's part two. Should reduce the +action percentage ;) Also has a few $4 cards.

Assemble is a new card. It's more like "dissemble", actually, but good luck finding images for that :P
Edit: Forgot vampire.
Edited Edit: On second third thought, the picture for that one isn't good enough, though :P

I like River.  But you have to strike a balance as to how many you get - too many, and you have a bunch of Rivers in hand that you don't need.  Too few, and you'll only see it once a shuffle, though the turn you get it will be awesome.

When i suggested it in the "-1 action" thread, there actually was some discussion as to how strong it was. Like you, i believe that balancing how many you want is tricky (considering you may be unlucky and draw it without Villages), which is why i priced at easily available $3. I don't have people who would playtest cards with me, though, and i find solo playtests terribly unsatisfactory. So maybe i'm totally wrong here.

Images!!

Figured i could just as well follow my own advice and add images to some of my cards. Naturally, positive feedback should now ensue.

Assassin & Sultan are two new cards. Sultan is vaguely as good as Oasis (i think), being less useful when paired with Estates, Curses, Ruins and dead Actions, but better if you can meet it up with Duchies, Provinces or alt-VP, or if you have no junk in hand at all. As a gainer, it plays actually very differently.
Assassin is a super-powered Militia/Ghost Ship attack. +2$ seemed a logical bonus, but i didn't want it to become a card that just goes "play one of these every turn". If you have no other actions, the bonus is useless, and if you play several, the attack doesn't stack.

Tribunal is the renamed Dragon. A lot of cards don't have (good) art yet, either, so i left those out. They are in the first post, though.

And because Roller Coaster Tycoon is one of the greatest games ever.

I've been thinking of picking it up on Steam just for the nostalgia factor.

It's on Steam!?

So is Railroad Tycoon II. I bought them both on the same night.

Ask me where I've been for the past few months.

Hey Voltaire, where have you been for the past few months?

Expect your answer late March.

I can confirm that having more players lessens the viability of engines. One important reason would be that important engine pieces like Fishing Village might run out before you can get more than 3 of them. Also attacks will hit you more often, which can actually raise the importance of trashers, but also drags out the game, raising the chances for successful slog strategies. Just my two cents.

« on: February 05, 2015, 06:03:24 am »
Is making your own shuffle luck cheating?

How could it be cheating if you buy the right cards to make the shuffle luck successful. Sometimes it just doesn't work that way and we still get a bad shuffle.

It isn't cheating, it's playing the game well. IWB just wants to start an argument again it seems, his last thread was about use of the word "Hands".

Hands down the best thread started in the last month or so.
Wrong thread.  The hands discussion is elsewhere.

THAT WAS THE JOKE.

Thank you, sir.  You are the poster f.ds needs, but not the poster f.ds deserves.

That's hardly a compliment, if i recall that movie correctly...

A friend of mine (hurr durr, "Mint") is very gifted with stage-wizardy card tricks. We sometimes play IRL Dominion. If he "made his own shuffle luck", i would most certainly call it cheating. I mean, he's a good friend and i trust him, but i'm pretty sure he could set up that KC-KC-Bridge-Bridge-Bridge if he wanted to.

Edit: Not that anyone cares for a serious opinion.

Scheme/Sea Hag here, too. Probably get a Remodel later to get rid of Sea Hag. 5/2 seems worse, but i'd probably go Embargo/Bandit Camp, though there's no real idea behind that. I'm just awful with Mint.

Being able to target only Copper makes Spice Merchant able to at best do 70% of the trashing job a full cantrip trasher can, and in the presence of junkers it can easily fall to 50% or less. Junk Dealer and anything along its lines can do 100% of that job, and that difference is worth more than Spice Merchant's little side benefits. Especially when junk like Estates and Curses are much worse than Copper.

Yeah, I know Junk Dealer's better, that's why it's a $5 cost card. It trashes something and effectively draws you a card and a copper every time you play it. Spice Merchant draws you 2 cards (which is better if you have more engine components to draw) and still trashes the junky copper card.

Junk Dealer can always be played, whether it's a Copper, a Curse, a Ruins, a Shelter, and Estate, even if there's something in your hand you don't necessarily wanted to get rid of but don't really mind losing, either. Without a Copper or silver in hand, Spice Merchant is junk. And hey, guess i'll play Junk Dealer to get rid of it.
