Rules Questions / Re: Feast, Throne Room and Band of Misfits - why?
« on: March 01, 2013, 11:43:46 am »
I'll be honest: even though I accept the ruling that TR locks on whatever BoM said first, it makes more sense to me that TR locks in on BoM and plays "whatever this card is" twice. The ONLY time this matters is on one-shot cards like Feast and Embargo, but when those are trashed they're no longer in play, so BoM is no longer locked in. However, BoM is in the trash now, so it can't lock onto anything because it's no longer "while in play" and therefore can't be anything.

And therefore?

A witch!...

I mean, therefore we let TR play that same action again, because it's better than letting BoM sit in the trash with no use at all.

(this means BoM as Fortress becomes a BoM again after being trashed and returned to your hand)

I'm on the side of the fence that doesn't want to pay because I already own the cards. The online version adds nothing for me. Plus I can rarely get it to work more than 1 or 2 games at a time. I used isotropic for solo testing of strategies and only a few times played against someone else. Of those times it was always against someone who I played the physical card game with. As for the positives: the official art is nice, the ai is a plus, and adventure system is a neat idea if you weren't required to use zaps to have a chance at winning.  Honestly, I don't see much else there worth using. When it does work it's difficult to follow the game and the "prettiness" is a distraction from following gameplay. I understand the product isn't designed for my demographic, but that doesn't change the fact I feel like I'd be buying something I already have.

Two cards come to mind when I see this card: Inn and Stables. Both of those cost 5. It's definitely weaker than Embassy. This is definitely stronger than Oasis. $4 seems like a good starting point.

Golem is completely new to me but it is a problem. are there many cards that also get confusing when playing this? any suggestions?

I wasn't promoting the other site as much as I was using it as a visual tool of everything all at once.

Goko Dominion Online / Re: So I bought Dominion: Intrigue the other day

[...]
Why do you think that virtually no restaurants charge for a cup of water, despite the cost of the cup being higher than the soda/coffee/tea that you'd pay 1-3$ to fill it with? People are accustomed to free water when you buy a meal.
[...]
Not disagreeing with you, but it should probably be mentioned that most cities require, by law, that any food service vendor provides free water.

Oh, and Goko still doesn't work very well on my laptop or Xbox. It's gotta be a combination of processor and browser.

Rules Questions / Re: Thief can trash Spoils, but not gain it - right?
« on: February 28, 2013, 03:15:00 pm »
Yeah, I agree. But note that this can put you in the odd situation of having to reveal a card that you may have actually lost track of (because it's been covered up in the discard pile).

How could that happen? You reveal Tunnel when you discard it; presumably, that means you are holding it and putting it in your discard pile, and as you do that you reveal it.

Quote from: Tunnel
2 VP
----------
When you discard this other than during a Clean-up phase, you may reveal it. If you do, gain a Gold.

Quote from: Tunnel (alternate)
2 VP
----------
When you discard this other than during a Clean-up phase, you may gain a Gold.

How are these different?

The difference is that cards that are discarded are hidden to the other players. Without the "reveal" part, there would be no way for all the other players to know that you discarded a Tunnel.
Which is exactly my point. You aren't losing track of something that you are revealing because you are doing it to show other players that you are discarding it. Otherwise you play Militia and I discard Tunnel and Copper at the same time, putting Copper on top of my discard, then picking up a Gold because, well I discarded a Tunnel.

It still leaves you a choice, it says "[...] you may gain a Gold."

Noble -- +$2
Any --> Any - Victory

Act.
Worth 2VP
Noble Feast seems like a good buy ;)
Most of the oneshot cards are redundant to add these parts to.

Not that it aides the discussion much, but I own all the current expansions and have only a few people that I can play games with. So they sit on the shelf for months at a time.

Why do I find the need to watch every school closing until mine comes up when I already know they don't have school??

I just have to wonder why people still rely on watching scrolling school closings on television in the age of the internet. Somebody is doing something weird.
When scheduling employees, I tend to look at calendar school closing days. It is surprisingly difficult to find that information for K-12 schools. It's a bit easier for colleges and universities.

He's talking about inclement weather closings, not scheduled closings.
I understand that, but the information is not as readily available as it could be.

On a pseudo-related website topic: my boss told me he didn't know how to read HoTMaiL.  I think I was less surprised about his understanding, relative to how shocked I was that he called HTML "hotmail"...

1. You already own the base game, so maybe try introducing it to friends and colleagues.

3. Not going to understand the game, or buying everything at once?

4. Get a cheap 3000/5000 count card box until you find a better storage solution. There's hundreds of ideas out there.

5. You suggested you liked Dark Ages and Prosperity best, maybe just buy those two and then buy 4 other games with the money you aren't spending on Dominion?

Fission
$4 - Reaction

When another player plays an Attack card, you may reveal this card, then reveal your hand.  If you have no Actions or Treasures in your hand, all players place their decks, hands, and discard piles into the trash.  Give each player starting decks from the trash, and each draws five cards; the player who played the Attack card continues the turn with this new hand.  Victory conditions remain unchanged.

(inspired by Innovation, of course)
Wow... reset... Multiple torturers might actually activate it too.

Potentially 12VP for 4 cost is a little high... What's the max Fairgrounds can reach without Black Market? (11 Kingdom piles, 10 differently named knights, 5 prizes, 5 different named ruins, 3 shelters, madman, mercenary, spoils, 7 standard supply piles, platinum, colony, potion... ???)... That's 46 different named cards in a game without black market, giving fairgrounds a max of 18vp at 6 cost (the average max is probably closer to 6 or 7vp)

Having this card available will either cause very few provinces to be bought, or cause provinces to be bought in defense. Playtesting will tell which is more likely... (Or let the puzzle forum have their way with it...)

The reaction part is kinda weird. I would have probably made the bonuses +$2 or +$P instead of reducing costs by $1 or $P. It seems very strong to remove the potion cost from cards. Especially when you can chain these because they're non terminal.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: MTG cards as Dominion cards
« on: February 22, 2013, 04:05:50 pm »
My game group found a way against the whole drive to keep spending more money to build better decks than each other. When we decided we wanted to play Magic, a couple guys who had a bunch of old cards lying around donated them to the group, and the rest of us threw in $10 which we used to go buy a bunch of packs.

Then we held a draft with all the cards, after which we acted like the cards we drafted were owned by us... we traded them, built decks with them, etc. All the decks were pretty crappy compared to tournament-level decks, but they were equal with each other.

Every once in a while, we would take all the cards, put them back in the pot, and start over again.
That's basically how our group handled PK Cards when we were introduced to them. There's no point in having more than 3 of any particular card so extras were donated to people as we taught more how to play.

I never knew there was a discarding phase.
Is it triggered by Militia?
Sorry, meant Clean-up phase.

Everything you played (except Duration) are discarded during Clean-up. You would probably want to state "from your hand during Clean-up" to prevent it from being a card on the table.

(sighs) But then it doesn't look like a reversing card, nor does it look particularly interesting or broken, anyway...
I still prefer the version which looks like a Duchess.
Okay. But the reverse of Tunnel would allow you to discard it when you gain a gold, other than during your clean up phase.

Is it really that uncommon for someone like me to thoroughly enjoy Dominion but abhor MtG?

(Why: I don't see how it can be fun losing a game before your 2nd turn.)

You wouldn't like playing against Celestial Chameleon in Dominion, then.
I didn't say 3rd turn...

Hmm... I read it as meaning the second there. So if you draw 4 Copper and your opponent says "Copper" you can't gain anything.
