The conflict between those two rating styles is elegantly resolved by the concept of a weighted contribution.

And I'd like to argue with its detractors that Outpost is far more often useful than they tempt us into believing.
I just don't see Outpost being in the bottom 10, even though it's kinda like a cycling Workshop at worst.

Edit: and apparently I put it there anyway. What was I thinking?

And I have Harvest dead last too.

Inspired by Bobby's Soviet Russia joke in King of the Hill:

A lot of the posts here seem to be missing the joke.  The joke here is based on a gag from the comedian Yakov Smirnoff.  On the other hand, several of you are instead posting humorous bits of political commentary, which I'm fine with too.
Let's not go too far with the political commentary, else this thread will get moved to the RSP (Religion/Sex/Politics) subforum.

You sould add spoiler here too. (I have modified the quote.)
I suppose I should. I made the false assumption that the viewer knows how many games were played in advance. There is only one possible score where you lose a series after 4 games: 1-3.
You don't know # of games when you roll down to video link. And even with 4 games, you could have won 3-1.

And this is another spoiler: I do not make it into the playoffs. I do not make it into the playoffs.
I did not read it before, but the score is hard to miss.

Thanks for the videos!
Yeah, I'll be more careful next time, and not assume everyone reads the results thread or the raw data.

My games against dudeabides. All were pretty interesting. I do not make it into the playoffs.

markusin 1-3 dudeabides

Game 1:
Log and Video

Code: [Select]
Poor House, Secret Chamber, Wishing Well, Conspirator, Wandering Minstrel, Catacombs, Horn of Plenty, Stash, Upgrade, Border Village
This board is just begging for a Horn of Plenty megaturn. My opponent finds a really neat interaction: Upgrading Catacombs into a Border Village. That's 3 cards right there, one of which can be a replacement for the trashed Catacombs. Very powerful on a board lacking +buy. This allows my opponent to get extra Wandering Minstrels, while I have my hopes on thinning my deck with upgrades.

Also, this is the first time I see Stash on Goko. Of course, neither of us got one.

Game 2:
Log and Video

Code: [Select]
Herbalist, Pawn, Storeroom, Feast, Young Witch, City, Contraband, Haggler, Market, Minion, Torturer
Storeroom isn't the best bane for Young Witch. Nevertheless, I underestimated their usefulness on this board that at least had city for a source of +actions. My opponent adds a Torturer to his deck, helping him win the curse split despite having two Young Witches to his 1. I started getting Minions, hoping that their cycling would help me find my Young Witches faster, and expected them to be a great asset in finding my Cities once they inevitably leveled up. My opponent triggers a bad reshuffle towardsw the end, giving me a good chance of catching up with my Detroit Rock Cities (because calling them Level 2 Cities or Level 3 Cities just doesn't cut it for everyone).

markusin 1-1 dudeabides

Game 3:
Log and Video

Code: [Select]
Fishing Village, Storeroom, Urchin, Bishop, Envoy, Spice Merchant, Band of Misfits, Counterfeit, Hunting Party, Mystic
This series was full of interesting boards. This one was no exception. Though it featured Hunting Party, it also featured Fishing Village with Envoy for draw. Bishop and especially Band of Misfits also came into play. I went for the trim, 1-Province a turn and using Bishop for VP while my opponent went for something more explosive involving Counterfeit. I do manage to get the early lead though.

markusin 1-2 dudeabides

Game 4:
Log and Video

Code: [Select]
Cellar, Embargo, Pawn, Workshop, Familiar, Gardens, Ironworks, Remake, Rogue, Witch
Ironworks-Gardens mirror with Workshop to boot. I start with a 2/5 split, yet opt to open Pawn/Ironworks over something with Witch. I don't see how anything can possibly keep up with the rush except for the rush itself. I tragically lose the Gardens split, which pretty much seals the game. I wonder if Rogue could have been effective here, but it seems too slow in the non-mirror.

Thanks for the games, dudeabides.

You can really see, why engines are string

anybody else feel like an old fart learning that "string" is a new word for "nifty"?

In addition to spelling errors, c4master needs to copy edit for comma use.   :P

So, I feel like there should be some kind of "Dude, you're on the internet" meme.
(I was only slightly tempted to purposefully screw up the grammar there).

On the other hand, I do find myself somewhat bothered by this kind of thing all over - particularly the superfluous commas.

On the other hand (apparently I have three (or more) hands), there are lots of non-native English speakers (writers).
Is that a stab at overusage of parentheses (for purposes other than smiley forming)? I personally feel like I use them too often.

You know, I won't complain at Conspirator being 20th. I had it a bit lower, but it's still a good card. Great with Treasury.

For April Fools Day next year, theory should disinclude all respect given in this thread from the respect totals. Then we would see some things.
That would be fun to see. I guess I shouldn't even bother upvoting any posts on this thread now.

Attempts to bring back Herminia with a graverobber will inevitably fail, for in-game reasons.

3137
I'd like to add, however, that Grand Market without the +Buy is missing a key part of Grand Market's power: end game control.

3138
Can anyone explain to me, why Conspirator is so high?
It seems to be a "win more" card. Obviously, it's only some kind of payload to an engine. But if your engine works with conspirators, it would also work without them, or am I wrong? Plus, they still need a gaining/buy/attack to be able to catch up later on. And since you don't want your stop cards like Coppers and estates, you probably need at least decent trashing. I can't see how this card changes a game or makes me go engine where I wouldn't do it otherwise. Something like Warehouse/Worker's Villag/Conspirator must be kind of an edge case, or am I totally wrong here?

you're thinking way too complicated. there are a lot of boards on which you play 2+ action cards every turn, and on each of these boards conspirator is an extremely cost efficient card, basically a grand market for $4. so it's good.
Conspirator doesn't have to be the star of the show. It let's you add money to a deck without reducing the decks reliability by all that much.

It's harder to have a deck centered around Conspirator, but again you don't need to go for such a deck on every board with Conspirator.

That said, I don't see it being as strong as I used to think it was.

I'm predicting Herminia gets pregnant, they get married at the castle of the guy from Scheme, and then Herminia and Albert get brutally slaughtered.
Brutally slaughtered? Unlikely, as Herminia would be ignored by Knights, Rogues, and Saboteurs.

I'm guessing a swindler convinces the King to trade in Albert for the Philosopher's Stone, which would supposedly make Albert obsolete.
Actually, the whole love story might be the beginning of the real story:

HERBALIST/PHILOSOPHER'S STONE: A STORY OF POWER, EXCESS, AND OBSESSION.

The thing with Apprentice is that it's a really good win-while-you're-ahead card. Jack decks are pretty good at getting an early leaf. Once that happens, you can just trash Provinces or Golds or something to rush the game end. If your deck also has +buy, then there's a chance to double-Province after trashing a Province. Trashing Silver's with Apprentice is one of the worst ways to use Apprentice in this kind of deck, but you can do that if you're desperate.

During the really late game, Apprentice can even trash Jacks. It's worth experimenting with before any definitive conclusions are drawn about Jack/Apprentice.

Good article!

I'm with soulnet, Polk and others in thinking the Jack-in-an-engine section could maybe say a little more about synergy with trash-for-benefit cards.  You mention Forager several times, but not Bishop, Salvager or Apprentice.  Jack seems especially suited for engines built around tfb, since he does two things you'd otherwise need to do separately, draw up after trashing, and gain more cards to trash.

Granted, silver isn't the greatest thing to feed your Bishop or Salvager, but maybe you use some of that silver to buy bigger and better trash :)  And if Jack fills your deck with enough silver that you Apprentice one to draw three more, that's a non-terminal +$4, right?  Maybe not as sweet as Apprentice/Market Square, but speaking of that combo, opening MS/Jack would be a solid road to buying the Apprentices.  And if I saw Jack, Bishop and any village other than Fortress, I'd at least consider plodding to the win at 2VP/silver.

It seems the only real synergy here is Apprentice, and it doesn't strike me as that strong -- I think it's a big deal that it's non-terminal, and it seems to me the main reason why you would what that is just to have some decent way to get rid of Silvers you don't want. Would you say that's accurate?
I don't think Apprentice's ability to trash Coppers, whose position in your hand can be replaced after playing JoaT, should be ignored. An early Apprentice should make a good addition to a JoaT deck.

I think I bott'ed Festival Library out once and it lost to Library BM.

Try adding an elite trasher like Trade Route (opening TR/Silver) and it should crush. If it has to be Base-only, I guess Chapel will do the job as well.
I've played some solitaire games with Moneylender instead of Chapel. Moneylender seems to do the job pretty well.

Adding a cantrip to a Jack deck is not like adding a Peddler to a terminal-draw Smithy deck. As HME said, Jack will only draw 1 card without handsize reducers. Not only that, it spies on the top card first. If it's an action you'll draw dead, at least you can skip it for what will likely be a non-action in a primarily money deck. If the top card isn't an action, you can leave it on top if you're worried about drawing one of your actions dead. Deck tracking helps here.

Festival and Library are so devoted to each other that, when Festival was added to the base set, Library crossed 6 expansions to be reunited with its love.

Almost no major disagreements on this list, and a whole bunch of cards exactly where I ranked them (including Taxman). I don't like seeing Silk Roads drop in ranking, and I seem to have underrated Quarry.

Good luck!
£66,000 seems awfully ambitious but i hope you get there.
(You realise to get this you need to sell 492 out of 495 cases you have, seems fairly specific!)

Why dont you have a $1 pledge level, that gets the person a plain old thank, seems the vogue these days
I imagine it will be especially difficult if you're only shipping to U.S.. Living in Canada, it would seem I'm out of luck here.
