It's a fine opener in Potion games, if the power $3s, Warehouse and Chapel aren't there. Especially if the potion card in the kingdom is a Familiar.

Worst:
$7: King's Court
$6: Goons, Nobles
$5: Embassy, Hunting Party
$4: Tournament, Monument, Smithy
$3: Menagerie
$2: Fool's Gold

King's Court being there surprises me a bit, but other than that, I'm not surprised. I would go for Fool's Gold and then Tournament here, possibly with some HPs, but I'm not confident in this strategy at all. I'd open FG/FG with both possible opening splits.

Best:
$7: Expand
$5: Ghost Ship
$4: Bridge, Baron
$3P: Familiar
$3: Black Market, Masquerade
$2: Pearl Driver, Herbalist
$0P: Transmute

Potion/Masquerade is probably the strongest opening here. With 5/2, I'd go for Potion/Herbalist. In case I fail to have $3P after the reshuffle, I'd buy a Pearl Driver or Herbalist (Pearl Driver if I already have Herbalist, otherwise Herbalist) with $2P and Transmute with $1P. Ambassador and strong village cards would make me buy the Black Market, but I wouldn't open with it in any case.

Yeah, shuffle the randomizers.  If the top card is from Prosperity, play with Colony.  If the bottom card (or second card, if your prefer) is from Dark Ages, play with Shelters.
Why shuffle the randomizers twice? If you have used them to randomize the kingdom, they are shuffled already.

I somehow understand doing this when you are losing, but surprisingly many opponents do this when they're winning. Many times my opponent has revealed a $8 hand with Shanty Town and then proceeded to take all the time in the world to play out their Scrying Pool engine with Stashes, Bishops, Torturers, Young Witches and Vaults before buying the last Province, top-decking all 10 of his Alchemists, and a Royal Seal with Herbalist and winning the game. All the while I have five Secret Chambers (which is also the Bane card) on my hand and two on my deck. And this most likely happens when I'm already late for class.

Yes, it is fun to answer the questions first, please keep the spoilers. I learned some things about Dominion strategy in general and many things about my own playstyle, and how it could be improved.

I don't disagree with anything, but there's one thing that I don't understand: Why would you pass a Grand Market when you have $6-7 without Copper and go for a Gold instead? Most likely, it will draw you a Copper which is as good as a Gold $-wise, but in addition it also gives a +Buy and marginal deck cycling and can hit Silvers or Golds, too. And it certainly doesn't hurt that the engine player will have one less Grand Market available. Is the risk of drawing an Estate too high, or does it have something to do with Courtyard being a terminal, or something else I have missed?

It's just the word "copy" that's causing me headaches, it makes me think that there must be at least two of something, an original and its copy.
When you Ambassador for 1, you are returning up a "copy" of the card and your opponent is gaining a "copy" of the card, but what you are returning and what he is gaining is actually the original card. A copy and an original card don't have to be separate cards.

Also, unless you specifically want this card to have a Harry Potter theme, call it Brownie, rather than House Elf. (Brownies are the folkloric creature that House Elves are based on.)
That's only if he wants this card to have a Scottish/English folklore theme, though.

I feel like understanding the late game has traditionally been the hallmark of graduating Iso levels:
You get to 20 by understanding Dominion has a distinct late game with its own strategy.
You get to 30 by understanding precisely when the late game starts.
You get to 40 by understanding that the game has a continuous, dynamic flow, and there's no such thing as a distinct late game.
Hey, then why am I not 40 yet?

Well actually, you have a decent chance of winning with better shuffle luck.
Yes, but then you have to buy something better than what your opponent bought to utilize your luck, and that isn't copying.

I would call it "taking into account your opponent's strategy and adjusting your own strategy accordingly" rather than "copycatting". I do it all the time when I have the feeling that my opponent is more comfortable with the kingdom than I am, as long as I (think I) understand why my opponent is making the choices he makes. Why would I make a suboptimal play when the optimal plays are presented right in front of me? Also, it's worth noting that unless you do something differently from my opponent at some point, the best you can do is a draw so there is no reason to be upset about copying.
