Dominion General Discussion / Re: Single Strategy Board?
« on: January 27, 2013, 06:18:30 pm »
I would be surprised if the warehouse and cartogs add anything to a chapelled deck. Your deck should be fairly thin to start with, and any bonus from playing your margs more should be offset by drawing your extra actions dead.

So the ideal deck would have a couple of Margraves, Chapel, and a few silver/golds? I had one Margrave, one Warehouse, and one Cartographer. Thanks for the input; we kind of play in a hermetically sealed bubble against ourselves, so it's cool to get ideas of how to play better.
No, I think you should probably have only one Margrave if you have Chapel. In a post-Chapel deck, your terminal draws will collide a lot if you have more than one: let's say your deck is 2 Coppers, 3 Silvers, one Gold, 2 Margraves and one Chapel - I think this scenario sounds pretty realistic. No matter how your deck is shuffled, your second Margrave will always either collide with your first one or miss the reshuffle. In other words, if you have two Margraves, you are playing one of them per each reshuffle, which is also the case if you have only one. But if you had another Silver instead of the second Margrave, your worst possible hand would be improved from $8 to $10 (which can be relevant when you want a second Gold before greening) and your best possible hand would be improved from $11 to $13 (which is very relevant).

Getting the second Margrave is timely when you have about 16 cards in your deck, but that will take a while if you go for the Chapel.

Yes, I grow bored of Dominion daily. And in a few hours, I regain the interest to play it.

Dominion Articles / Re: The things we do to track - IRL

I just state everything out loud after playing any card (except for the first village). After I have heard myself saying how many actions, buys and coins I have left, I will remember it.

How do you topdeck 3 cards with courtyard? And why not trash cache with forager?
I'm still recovering from the over 4-hour concert that I played at yesterday, and apparently it shows. Then let's say you've topdecked them with Armory instead. If you topdeck Cache, your hand will be either Cache, Copper, Forager, NV, Fortress or Cache, Copper, Copper, Forager, Fortress (with NV on top of the deck) and unless I fail to see something here, the first alternative will make $31 unless Fortress draws you $ because there is no second copper, and the second alternative will force you into playing the Fortress, and then you'll have to trash the coppers and some Foragers, which won't be enough for 4 Province buys either.

17881
Operation: edge case: Find a case where you'd actually want to trash the Cache and topdeck two coppers. I think I can do it, although explaining the topdecking is a little harder.
You have Tortured your opponent down to 0 cards in hand, topdecked a Forager, a Fortress and a Native Village (mat contains 10 King's Courts and nine Foragers) with Courtyard and need to buy 4 Provinces to end and win the game. The trash contains a Copper and a Silver. You need to trash the Cache for the Foragers to produce enough $, and even though you probably won't need to topdeck the coppers, doing so will ensure that you will have the required $32.

17882
WHAT?
Armory is by far the best gainer for engines. Top-deck an additional village? Or whatever you need at the time to kickstart your engine?
Add highway or similar cards and it gets awesome - then throw in Kings Court and it just gets crazy.
I love the endless turns where you just keep top-decking additional Kings Courts and Armories and drawers. *drool*
This. It's like a Band of Misfits for the next turn, except it costs the action and the card twice (which is pretty bad) and it gains you the card permanently (which is pretty good).

Signature related.

When my wife is losing, she starts taking forever to shuffle. It's not usually a conscious decision on her part, but it sure gets annoying. Especially because it means I have to re-sleeve more often.
Whenever I'm losing, my opponent is always taking forever to do everything.  ;D

Golden Deck without Chapel - always wanted to do this and now it's done'd! I made a pretty bad mistake on turn 13 playing Bishop before Bazaar, slowed me down for two turns, but in the end I was fast enough.

Puzzles and Challenges / Re: Anti Wishing Well

The real puzzle is, in what situation will you be advantaged specifically by naming Bulbasaur, as opposed to any actual Dominion card (like Chancellor, Curse, Madman, or Diadem).

You play with all cards in BM.
You have a copy of every card via BM and all Ruinses and Prizes and so on. You have 1 card left in your deck, you play WW, first draw gets you a copper and gets you to $11, and you don't want to cause reshuffle cause you have 2 Plats in your hand that you want in your next shuffle. Naming any dominion card might cause a reshuffle if you really are unlucky. So you name Bulbasaur Charmander, cuz he is more awesome.
But if you only have one card left in your deck, you know what that card is so you can just name anything else.

The pattern is not cards that require revealing a treasure, because there is no sixth such card.
But there is. Counterfeit, though that obviously isn't the solution you're looking for.

Hinterlands. I love TFB and Gardens strategies and it has a lot of cards that are generally pretty good with Gardens and TFB cards. My favorite card from Hinterlands would probably be Haggler or Ill-Gotten Gains, though Spice Merchant is very attractive too.

I feel like a key difference between Market Square and Tunnel is that MS triggers on something that you normally want to happen anyway. Sure, there are cards which make you want to discard stuff, but you almost always want to trash stuff. That and you generally want as many MSs as you can get, not quite the same with Tunnels.
Indeed; discarding useless cards won't harm you, but trashing useless cards will benefit you. And MS cares about other useless cards being trashed while Tunnel itself is the useless card which has to be discarded.

Though, Tunnel has its strengths as well and it really depends on the kingdom which one is the better one. But usually, I'd be going for the Market Squares.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: How much of dominion skill is luck?
« on: January 13, 2013, 06:51:29 pm »
In this particular case, more of the issue is that you perceive Gold as being a step ahead of the 5$ cards, and often it's not.
Though, having two Estates miss the reshuffle is always a good thing and completely luck-dependent.

17894
I am a huge fan of the Ill-Gotten Gains artwork, but that aside, I haven't really paid much attention to the illustrations (read: nothing else has been good enough to catch my attention while I'm focusing on the game). So I'm going to say Hinterlands.

FT + Jester is just like playing a witch.
Except that it discards one Curse/V card from the opponent's current shuffle, so it is slightly weaker than a Witch, attack-wise. EDIT: Edge cases aside, that is.

Complaints that you are playing "too slow" seem to have become a common thing from people who are about to ragequit imx. What they really mean is that they don't like, and are really bad at, engine games.
I may have asked my opponent to play faster and then resigned myself after a few turns quite a few times. That's definitely not because of rage, that's because I play a lot of Dominion at school (way over 3/4 of the games I have played, I have played at school) and that means sometimes being in a hurry.

Slight offtopic: why cant I be Eevee on iso? It says that name is already taken, but there has never been anyone called that on the leaderboard.
I don't know if it has anything to do with this, but whenever I log in and stay idle for a while on the page where you type in the name, it will say the name Awaclus is already taken (even though I am obviously the one who should have already taken it).

I don't really mind opponents taking a longer turn if they just want to score more points (because sometimes, who knows, you can count wrong and lose)
I forgot to mention that I always use the point tracker.

It's a fine opener in Potion games, if the power $3s, Warehouse and Chapel aren't there. Especially if the potion card in the kingdom is a Familiar.
