Dominion Articles / Re: Masterpiece
« on: December 03, 2013, 11:33:23 am »
The first paragraph is not emphasized enough.  That first Gold is extremely helpful.  Subsequent $6 should most often be Masterpiece buys.
I almost agree with this now. Early on, Gold is superior, and as the game goes on, Masterpiece becomes better and better in comparison. However, I think that rather than buying 1 Gold and Masterpieces after that, you should buy Golds until you get your first big Masterpiece and Masterpieces after that, because the reason why the Golds are extremely helpful is that huge Masterpiece buy - you want to maximize the number of Golds before that, but after that, Golds aren't that useful any longer. Usually, this means getting 1-2 Golds in practice.

A peddler that discards a copper is like a lab (unless you prefer copper over +1$ for some reason).

Btw in which case is it just a great hall?
Even if you reveal curse, the discarding option makes it nearly as strong as a lab (unless you wanted to have that curse in hand for some reason).
If you have no card on top of the deck, or you reveal an action you want to keep and can't spend the +action.

Dunno if I'd include the second scenario... if we did, we could of course say that Village is only a Great Hall if you don't play 2 actions (which might be a fair assessment, but doesn't fairly rate Village's power), or we could say that Peddler is just a Great Hall if it happens to give you more than you can spend that turn.
Once I opened Ironmonger/Masquerade and on turn 4, hit Masquerade with Ironmonger. Replace Ironmonger with Village and it would be an obvious misuse of the cards, but it's much less so in this situation, so I think it is more fair for Ironmonger than it is for Village. Though, depending on how you look at it, maybe it also fairly rates Village's power, because it is a reason why you wouldn't buy Village in a big money deck, so if being unfit for some strategies makes a card weaker, then Village is made weaker by the fact that you don't always connect it with two terminals. But if you only look at the strategies in which Village is actually good, then it isn't.

Gardens, Horse Traders, Catacombs, Hunting Grounds, Rats, Stables, Ironworks, Nobles?

EDIT: Gardens, Catacombs, Hunting Grounds, Rats, Stables and Ironworks are people enough.

I have already said this somewhere else, but the good thing about Ironmonger is that it is better than Village as a Village, because it is not a Village in the first few shuffles, when being a Peddler or Lab is way better.
Though, the thing is, you don't need a village during the first few shuffles anyway (unless there's an edge case), and when you need a village, Village is better as a village than Ironmonger, because it's guaranteed to split the action. If you've got to use Ironmonger as a village, the fact that you can start getting them earlier than usual is just compensation for the reliability that you lose when you actually need it.

Dominion Articles / Re: Combo: Hermit/Madman + Market Square

Because one of my favorite things about Dominion is that it's symmetric. Playing against someone who's been practicing a particular board breaks that.
By that logic, doesn't playing against Stef on any board break that as well?

I am in no position to say anything and I'm fine with whatever decision you make, but I think that players should be allowed to replay any of their games for any reason, as long as they both agree on it. Of course, this isn't in the rules and changing the rules after the tournament has already started is slightly questionable, but:

1) It's obviously an improvement with no drawbacks
2) Even if it's not in the rules, people can do it anyway: just don't post the log from the original game, and if anyone is bothered enough to check from drunkensailor, they can claim that the one game whose log was not posted was just a casual game for fun in between the tournament games (maybe that's a little weird, but it's not prohibited, and there can be reasons why people would want to play a game with no pressure in between the "serious" games).

First of all, a Rebuild Deck is a Slog.
I'd say that Rebuild is more like a rush, since it's a fast scoring strategy that aims to grab some points and end the game as soon as possible.

Yet another thing to note is that Silver isn't always beneficiary in a Colony game, so it could have been better to keep it in hand instead of topdecking it (depends on the situation: in early game, topdecking is a good idea).

EDIT: Though, I guess that trashing it with the Watchtower would be better than doing nothing if you don't want the Silver.

General Discussion / Re: Gas prices

Definitely working better of late.

Perhaps they did this just to mess with our minds to make Goko seem awesome when it works, when in fact it still is not.  Kind of like how gas prices went from $2.25/gallon to $4.50/gallon in the summer of 2008, causing an outrage, but in the 5+ years since then everybody now thinks that $3.50/gallon is just fine.

I always feel so sorry for people in the US having to pay a ludicrous $4.50 per galleon. That's insanely high, almost 40% of what petrol costs us here at the moment.

(inb4 I get sent to RSP)

Only $4.50 per gallon....
Its £1.30 a litre in UK...think thats about £6 a gallon, so about $9 a gallon?
(Maths may be waay off, its late)
It's that expensive in the UK? That's surprising, I thought it would have been cheaper there than in Finland for sure, but it's only about $8.4 a gallon here.

Wouldcutter
Action - $3
+1 buy
+$2
---
While this is in play, ignore the word 'would' in all other card's text, resolving the card as though it did not have the word 'would' there.
I play a Village, then a Wouldcutter, then another Wouldcutter. No wait, the second card is now just a cutter. And I have to ignore the word '' in all other card's text, resolving them as though it did not have the word '' there. What?

Personally, I like this version:

Quote
Types: Action
Cost: $5
Reveal then discard any number of Victory cards. +$1 per card discarded. Draw until you have 5 cards in hand.
It's a Ruined Library if you don't have any Victory cards in your hand. Sounds pretty swingy to me.

Goons say Hi.

Needs a restricton of sorts.

And bridge too.

I play KC-KC-Bridge-Bridge-Bridge and ten Goons.  I get 83765483 points by buying everything.
How can you get 83765483 points when you have ten Goons in play? Wouldn't that be 837654830 points or something?

Well, you have provinces, duchies, and estates too.
:o How do you get those into play?

My memory fails me. What did DXV have to say about Silver-with-bonus costing $4?
I can't find a quote from Donald X. himself, but here's a quote from soulnet: "The original point is, there are many times in which people buy Silver for $4. If there is a Silver+ for $4, you will always buy it over regular Silver if you have $4, therefore making Silver kind-of obsolete many times, and making a pile too likely to be fully consumed for no particularly good reason (especially in multiplayer)."

Depends on the Kingdom, but with Upgrade in play, I'd slightly prefer gaining Scout over nothing at all.

Agreed, Scout is only terrible if you consider that when you bought it, you could have bought any other $3 or $4 instead. But a free Scout is generally a benefit, not something you'd want to get rid of.
Once <25% of your deck is green then Scout is on average worse than a do-nothing cantrip. It doesn't take long to get there: after your opening buys, you have a deck of 12 cards with 3 estates, a green density of 25%. The situation gets better for Scout once greening begins, but it's still a pretty narrow window where it's better than nothing.
Unless you can benefit from the deck manipulation.

I thought Highway could not reduce the price of something to below zero?
So what happens if you play a Poor House and have a Goko in hand.
Nothing for 5 minutes, then the game crashes.

The last part of the card is largely superfluous.  Royal Seal and Watchtower can both be used on the copy anyway.  A second copy of Nomad Camp will top-deck itself just like the first copy.  What else is there?  Explorer, I guess?
Mine, Armory.

Sweeper (Action, Cost:3)

+1 Card
+1 Action

Choose a card in your hand. Discard it, or trash it.

this should cost $4. being able to open with 2 cantrip trashers is too strong, i think
Though, opening something like double Forager isn't much worse.

Forager hurts your early economy and cycling, though. This hurts your cycling not at all and your economy only when you have it with 5 coppers.
If any player trashes a Copper, Forager can help your economy, and it has +buy, too. Sweeper/Sweeper is better than Forager/Forager, but they both leave your deck at a pretty miserable state economy-wise; I would rather open something like Sweeper/terminal silver.

Make an argument for why Scout is not such a bad card.  If the argument is convincing, gain a Scout in hand (whether or not Scout is in the supply) and +$2.  If you lose this game, your friends are allowed to continue to bash Scout.
I like how your friends are still allowed to continue to bash Scout even if you lost a game without any Scouts, if you fail to make a convincing argument.

We have a new player, I just introduced a coworker.
But everyone is already playing the game, there are just some people who never lose it because they don't know about it.

I don't play the game.  I used to, but not anymore.

People say that, not you are playing. Unfortunately its not a choice...

The way you win is by realizing how you can win.
The statement is true: there is no way to win, thus, you can't realize how you can win, thus, there is no way to win.
