Dominion Articles / Re: How to be good at Dominion
« on: March 26, 2018, 05:07:47 pm »
I don't think there is any person who plays Dominion only to be good at it, without also finding it fun. There are millions of things you can choose to become good at. Why not become good at something that you actually enjoy?

You don't enjoy the process of becoming good at something itself? Sure, Dominion is fun. But if your primary goal is to get good at Dominion, your primary goal can't be having fun. Not even once have I looked at a board and asked myself the question "what strategy should I do here in order to have the most fun I can possibly have?".

I have looked at a board and prioritized winning over learning though, thousands of times actually, and that hasn't been great.

I would say my primary goal when playing Dominion is having fun. Getting better is secondary. Luckily for me, the strategies which are most fun and those which cause me to learn the most mainly coincide. Namely, whichever thing is the biggest, wackiest, Developiest engine possible. Though there are exceptions, such as Hermit/MS which I am still bad at despite it being straightforward and likely to be useful.

I just want to draw some attention to the concept that you have to keep challenging yourself and stepping out of your comfort zone if you want to get better at the game.

And I think just saying this might be more effective at accomplishing that goal than your article is. Part of that is because of how off-putting it begins. It doesn't matter how short or long it is when it starts with the statement: "Always keep in mind that winning is more important than having fun." For me, at best this makes you sound like you're out of touch with why many people play dominion (so then why would I listen to what else you have to say?), and at the worst it just makes you sound like a dick (so, again, I have no incentive to keep reading). Personally, I would have never read the whole thing if I wasn't already familiar with your eccentricities, Awaclus (and to be clear, this isn't intended as an insult. It means I kept reading because I think you often have worthwhile things to say even when the way you say them puts me off).

If you're not playing Dominion because you want to be good at it, then you're not the target audience for this article. I might recommend reading an article titled "How to have fun with Dominion" instead in that case.

I'm confused by this. Why play Dominion if you're not having fun?

Why practice playing the violin if you're not having fun? If you don't want to achieve anything, then it's fine to only ever do things that are fun.

I don't think there is any person who plays Dominion only to be good at it, without also finding it fun. There are millions of things you can choose to become good at. Why not become good at something that you actually enjoy?

Uhhhh....

So, not all tokens anymore? Just the debt tokens?
Yes, that's what I'm saying, just Debt tokens.

How are you guys concluding that Possession works on anything other than debt tokens? It's directly contradicted in the above quote.

So happy about this! Though I understand the awkwardness of referencing a mechanic from a different set. Is this rule change official as of a particular date? Need to make sure I get my Possession-Monument engine going at just the right time.

Pedantry time! Technically, "tokens" are from different sets already. There are no tokens at all in Alchemy.

Note that if you gain a Cursed Village and reveal the Hex, you can't choose to do something else before the Hex resolves. You have to make the decision before flipping the Hex.

There are 6 Ghosts, which is clearly meant to be 1 per player. Does this mean it isn't possible to gain more than one Ghost with Exorcist?
(Is there only supposed to be one Ghost in the game per player, or is it a pile of 6 Ghosts regardless of number of players?)

There are always 6 Ghosts. You are not limited to one Ghost. I think the number 6 was chosen so that in a 6-player game with Cemetery, each player would be able to gain one.

Edited to add: Also in 2- and 3-player, the Ghosts can be divided evenly among the players. This is probably slightly more relevant.

It's not on anyone's list but Vampire is the sexiest suckiest card by far.

Vampire and Exorcist are neck and neck for my favorite Nocturne card. Vampire's attack can carry a real bite, and I think being able to gain Duchies should count for a lot.

Dominion Articles / Re: Masquerade - Market Square is Not a Combo
« on: February 15, 2018, 09:53:44 pm »
What is the play rule for Market Square? Early on you want to keep it in a Masq hand to get the free Gold, but later on you want to play it to maximize coin in hand.

How do I adjust play rules based on early/late game?

I would be surprised if playing a Market Square in hand first after point X in the game makes a significant difference to the comparison of Masq versus Masq-MS other than maybe you can buy one or two more MS. I would be interested in sims adjusting the play rule if they do significantly change the relative win percentages.

I took a look at some of the generated sample games. It seems that the bot is indeed keeping MS early and playing it late, though I don't know what logic it's using. I don't think it can be adjusted by the user.

I tried out some things and it looks like buying a second Masq is bad for the pure Masq strategy; however, opening Masq/Masq into 2 MS then money boosts the Masq/MS to about 52/42 vs single Masq+money.

Donald X. confirmed on Discord that bought-and-gained Nomad Estates become yours before they are gained, so they go to the top of the deck. Nomad Estates that are gained without being bought go to your discard (or hand in the case of Artisan, etc.).

Rules Questions / Inheritance and Nomad Camp
« on: February 10, 2018, 03:05:19 am »
I played an online game recently where I Inherited Nomad Camp and then used Ironworks to gain Estates. I was expecting the gained Estate to be topdecked (and then immediately drawn), but instead it went to my discard pile. I know that when-buy and when-gain abilities of Inherited cards apply when buying/gaining Estates, but Nomad Camp doesn't quite have those, instead having an alternate gain location. So I have a question about two scenarios:

If I buy and subsequently gain an Estate Inheriting Nomad Camp, where does it go?

If I gain an Estate Inheriting Nomad Camp without buying it, where does it go?

Ok, guess this one inspired by a specific person.

How much do 10 copies of Cornucopia cost?  :D

It takes a big man to admin when he's wrong. Which I will not do, and instead ask: How can Echips be designed such that I wasn't wrong? I mean, there's gotta be a reason they're Echips and not just normal coins.

They could be biased coins with p(heads) ~= 0.72563.

I play just one card and get:

+ 5 Cards
+ 5$
+ 8 Actions
+ 1 Buy

Which card did I play?

Storeroom, with 4 Champions Processed beforehand.

Alternate solution: You have an engine with Scheme. Opponent is using Enchantress. Schemes, Enchantresses, and Embargoes are Embargoed, and Pirate Ship is the next cheapest action. You want to have an action to get Enchanted so you can get the full use from the rest of your cards.

It is essential to the concept of forums that you be able to respond to the one part of a post that you want to respond to. It is essential to the concept of forums that you be able to respond to people responding to you.

It is essential to the concept of the dominionstrategy forums that you be able to talk about what you personally think the power level of a card is. It's like right in the title.

What is not essential is ranting about how you hate a particular poster for posting. It's, I'm going to call it "toxic, draining behavior." Try not doing that? Man.

It's not hating a particular poster for posting. It's hating a particular poster for posting, endlessly, in a particular tiresome way.

Rules Questions / Re: Ghost + Duplicate
« on: December 21, 2017, 04:57:56 pm »
No, Ghost only doubles the on-play instructions of the card it plays, which in the case of Duplicate are "Put this on your Tavern Mat." When you call Duplicate afterwards you will only get the effect once.

No, Chapel trashes 4 cards at the same time. You use Overgrown Estate's on-trash ability after you are done trashing with Chapel, so you can't trash the card you draw from it.

As an aside, Imp is a lovely target for Prince, isn't it? If Imp is the first card you play each turn, the restriction fades into irrelevance and it becomes (almost exactly) a Laboratory that costs "up to $4".

Not only that, but you can use it to pull neat tricks like playing a Vault, discarding your hand, and then calling Guide. Or playing KC-KC-(engine) to draw your entire deck, then calling Transmogrify with your whole deck in hand.

Why not just have the client keep the log and display it on the end game screen? There's no need to stay connected to the game server, just use the copy of the log that the client already has.
