Variants and Fan Cards / Re: A self-limiting searcher
« on: January 17, 2013, 07:03:10 pm »
To solve the supply problem I would add a "When you trash this card, return it to the supply." Maybe add "instead" at the end and "would" before trash, but Trader has wording issues and have the card visit the thrash before going back to the supply should be no problem. In any case, you get the idea.

You should also limit what you can put in your hand to non-Searchers, otherwise the limit is just non important, because you can put the next Searcher in your hand and start over.

The searching seems quite strong, especially with cursers. I would price it at 4 so you cannot open Searcher/Sea Hag or Searcher/Young Witch. In any case, besides the opening, the pricing would probably be no big deal because you mostly will buy one of these and just gain more with it if you need.

Final comment, stacking the effect with KC can set up combos like KC + Scheme + Golem + X without needing a third enabling card.

I've never seen such a thing. I've seen America as continent, and also North/Central/South America as 3 continents, but never only two. In any case, an American is an individual born or a citizen of any country of North/Central/South America.

I was actually taught America is one continent, but heard the opposite from other people. Also heard North American only consists of Canada and the US, but mostly from ridiculous attempts from particular US people trying to separate themselves from Mexico. In a related hilarious/frightening note, I've also seen US elementary school books showing the amazon as not belonging to any country, making Brazil less than half its size (and also restricting the surface of other neighboring countries, but not as significantly).

North American Surely?

That would still include Canadians (and Mexicans, but is irrelevant to the original point) besides US people.

And then only Americans if you are including both North and South America continents, which is unlikely.

Back on topic, the sumary for the rules should specify that the final is going to be played with preset kingdoms, right?

EDIT: Or at least state "every round before the final ..." instead of just "every round".

Besides USA-Canada jokes, for which I have nothing to say about, Canada IS an American country, therefore canadians are americans, as are citizens of the rest of the continent. I'm not sure if there is a different english word to denominate only USA citizens or people born in the USA, at least Wikipedia also lists American as the demonym.

BTW, in 4 players I would go green as soon as I hit 8 (assuming I have at least 2 of Venture/Hoard at that point) because you don't need as much green in your deck as in 2p, and also, three pile endings are way more common (in this board, both Venture and Hoard seem like they may run out, and Fool's Gold as well, although by the moment you hit 8 you will already know about that to have better judgement).

I do not like Stables here, because there aren't any powerful terminals and Venture and Hoard are not especially aided by big hands. Bank is, but if you are discarding treasures to Stables, is more likely that your big hands is going to be a lot of green when you are done drawing. Stables is way better for Action chains, not so much for Treasure decks. I would rather have another Venture.

I would open Silver/Lookout and play Venture/Hoard, to have high density of good treasures to make Venture worth 3 on average. If you get a couple of ventures, I would prioritize trashing coppers instead of estates with lookout. If you have less than 5 in the second reshuffle, maybe pick up a second Lookout, but you want the Silver opening, because 2 lookouts will delay Venture and Hoard too much. After you have a couple of ventures, you may want to go Mandarin if you have 5 with few treasures (especially with Hoard), because it is likely that you will get your first province after that, and the card on top Mandarin makes you place can be discarded by Venture and since you don't have other terminals, Mandarin is almost like a Gold.

Alternate solution: They will all return to the deck when the game ends.

I guess this being in the non-Dominion related subforum, this solution is incorrect, though.

Only homosexuals (and maybe asexuals?) would remain in the Island for more than a couple of days, given that there are only males on it. Actually, I guess almost every male in the world enjoy some form of interaction with females, so probably everyone will eventually leave if they can.

On a more serious note, I've heard an equivalent problem more tha 10 years ago, non-equivalent statement and answer, but the same reasoning behind the solution, so I'm going to guess that it is an old problem, and probably is recorded in a couple of books.

About the stranger being relevant
They know there is someone with blue eyes, and they also know everyone knows that, and they also know everyone knows everyone knows that, but blue eyed people do not not (everyone knows)99 that, because you need to see at least 100 people to be sure of that, and blue eyed people only see 99

I think its best if you don't have to leave, even if it means 4 byes in a row. I know I would not want to be asked to leave, and I would rather have everyone wanting to play playing, especially the ones making extra effort to make the tournament possible.

In any case, it makes it likely that everyone gets a single bye through the tournament, and it does sound fair. The problem is that we may run into a forced 2nd bye to the same person in the semifinals.

Another option is to have groups of 3 with round robbin when there are 9 people left, and then a round robbin with the 3 winners (and maybe round robbins for the 4-6 and 7-9 spots, assuming people is willing to participate in that). I would love to get in that format, should Qvist let me make it that far.

Actually, it should be "when you discard this from play", otherwise the game actually hangs: you gain the card, and would usually put it into your discard pile, so the player to the left gains it, so he would put it in his discard piel, so his left neighbor gains it, etc...

I don't see any problem with reactions if the Curse is only given to 1 player.

I swindled two prices of my opponent and got swindled one of my own on the same game. It is so fucked up.

Nice overview!

I wish you mentioned Apprentice as non-terminal Draw. I think with Apprentice especially, but also with other trash-for-benefit (like Salvager) you may WANT to green early, especially against an alt-VP opponent. Just deny the Gardens/Silk Roads and use them as fuel early. Also, Apprentice likes you buy the most expensive cards, and its really hard to gum-up once you have several Apprentices as long as you don't mind trashing your big cards.

What are the best games of Dominion you remember playing and why? (more fun, surprising, whatever)
I have commented on some memorable games in secret histories and that post in response to "maybe you should try getting beaten with KC/Masq/Goons before commenting on it" and such. It will be hard to find good new stories. Which I think is what I said previously in this thread. There isn't generally going to be much of a story to a random game with Rats that was a blast.

Sorry, I did not explain myself correctly, I was not requesting anecdotes (although I love those), I was thinking more on "were there boards that surprise you because of its power or fun or whatever?". Do you even keep some boards to study later like we do here?

And re-checking the 'do I even buy Noble brigand on turn 1?!' - yes, yes you do. You really do.

Is this just because of your opponent's T2 buy missing the reshuffle? Or you are also trying to delay silver to avoid getting robed yourself? (compared to buying it on turns 3 or 4, I don't see any other reason).

Does BM + NB beat Masq + BM or JoaT + BM or Wharf + BM? That would be soooo surprising! Especially for Masq and Wharf, is adding a NB instead of a Silver a good idea? The potential collision seems not worth it.

Also, if your oponent is going JoaT, NB seems kind of a liability. You will steal Silver often, but he is also gaining Silvers with Jack and the other benefits of Jack seem much better than the +1. And against a BM opponent, I guess you will never or almost never give him a Copper to make the attack hurt their economy.

How about not giving the cantrip (maybe just not give the +1 Action) if you gain a Card? That way, you cannot activate a lot on the same turn as easy (having an engine to do it its fine, I guess, since it involves additional strategy).

... When someone asks you if 2/5 < 3/4, you say "depends on the Kingdom".

Witches have the power to make 2/5 > 3/4.

1799
Also, if you could play 6 Highways is likely that:
1. you can win by 3-pile as Davio said.
2. you can buy more than 1 province per turn and come back on pure green, without attacking (for instance, buying any $5 with +Buy should easily give you one more province and possibly more instead of "just" removing an opponent Province, getting him a Gold or Duchy -or Alt VP- to compensate).
3. your opponent also can buy more than 1 province per turn and 3-pile at any point.

I think it is rare that Highway->Saboteur is the best choice, it may be a desperate move, or something to compensate if you have extra actions but no +Buy nor gainer. UNLESS you can KC or at least TR the Saboteur, that can be a devastating turn and you can do it and then 3-pile for the win, getting a massive VP swing.

On the flip side, if you can pull it off fast, 2 Highways -> Saboteur will mess with your opponent engine by killing its 5s early, instead of its Provinces late. If your opponent has a good engine, it will quickly recover from a Province lost much more than a semi-built engine from losing its key $5 card.

He could have just designed Dominion, moved on to the next game laughing and swimming in the money a la Scrooge McDuck.

He already said he prefers engines to BM.

About the post, I agree with Davio, however, I do not think those good qualities are related (at least not too strongly) with him being arrogant or whatever. Plenty of arrogant people that are also smart, passionate and good persons.

However, why would we (or him) care so deeply about him being perceived as arrogant or not in the internet? Is definitely not such a big deal, and I don't think responses in this forum are conclusive proofs about his actual personality in either way. If he was asking people their skin color to decide weither to answer their questions, it would be different, but is nothing like that, so what's the point?

I think what we are actually doing here is almost Analysis Paralysis, just analizing a situation for the sake of arguments and discussion without any actual consequence or conclusion coming up. I know I do this a lot, and the nerdy folks I know IRL also, so I guess is just "professional" deviations, but we should seriously stop and get something useful, like nice questions.

So, questions:

What are the best games of Dominion you remember playing and why? (more fun, surprising, whatever)
