Dominion: Dark Ages Previews / Re: Knights vs Rogues!
« on: August 16, 2012, 06:59:01 pm »
I think I know this one. You ask one of them which door the other one would reccomend, thus forcing the same piece of information to pass through the minds of both an honest knight and a lying rogue, so that way you can… wait, what was the question again?

Variants and Fan Cards / Re: Fan Expansion: Proletariat v1.2

I'm here thanks to icesphere just now adding these cards. I haven't looked at ay of them, but those Token Rules caught my eye. I like the concept, but it seems that in terms of real-life play, it must be clarified what "any time" means. My interpretation is: Only during your Action phase, and only before, between, or after fully resolving Action cards. I have a feeling it would be extremely problematic if you could spend two cattle in the middle of playing a card.

Variants and Fan Cards / Re: Really bad card ideas

I wish I could help this about myself, but semi-Curse fan cards bug me so much, I'm annoyed even when they're proposed as bad cards. Make them negative semi-Victories, dammit!  :P

When you think about it, three of the pieces in chess have movement abilities that don't make thematic sense. Why is the queen so insanely powerful? Why would a bishop move diagonally? And what exactly is a rook? A tower that moves on its own? Huh?

(To clarify, I happen to know the answers to those questions, but that's a side issue from my point. AFAIC, all that matters is the cards having simple, memorable names.)

Dominion Isotropic / Re: Isotropic

You access it by magic, like Diagon Alley in Harry Potter.

I'm not sure, but I might be getting better than my relatives who actually own it. That said, all of us are truly non-competitive, in the sense of not caring deeply about winning. (I tend to care more when I'm playing against an AI, oddly enough.) It's all about the experience, and little rituals, like singing each card title in a tune specific to that card. I see games with them more as a chance to experiment.

Our last game had a rather advanced setup but also a relatively new player, one who will likely never really learn the game because she doesn't play board games often. I advised her every turn, took as little time as possible with my own turns, and came in dead last. That's just how things go sometimes. A few months back, we played a game against involving two people who are definitely more advanced, and I won by a large margin with the help of Apprentice, now one of my favorite cards. We'll still be talking about the time I Apprenticed a Colony and got two Colonies out of it.

A thought that just occurred to me: I might care less about my success against human players because when I do care, whether in online or RL play, I tend to take really long turns; since I'd rather not annoy anyone, I simply don't bother with "playing to win" to quite the same degree. And this can have the fun benefit of seeing combinations in my hand that I hadn't even thought of before!

Variants and Fan Cards / Re: What would you like to see in Dominion?
« on: June 19, 2011, 10:36:11 pm »
No, those force the reveal if you don't have the relevant card, so they're fine. Throne Room and Explorer could just as well say '..or reveal a hand with no [Actions/Provinces]'.

As it happens, Donald X has said that Throne Room's lack of "You may", in contrast to King's Court, was an error, but that (unsurprisingly) the official rules still require following the card's exact instructions.

In general, it makes sense for cards like these to have the card choosing/revealing be optional, but effects that would hurt you to not be.

I do have a feeling that some "cares-about-having-silver" card is coming. The weird option on trusty steed, some comments Donald X. made in the recent secret history about cards that were scrapped, Bureaucrat, Explorer (when do you NOT want to reveal the province? Why is it "may"), and a couple other things.

Regarding Explorer: even without a "Yay Silver" card, I can think of a few odd situations where it's better for Explorer to give you Silver than Gold, mainly having to do with their different costs.

For example, say your VP is 8 less than the leader's, and your hand is Village, Explorer, Province, Forge, and a Curse. You play Village, drawing a Tactician. You play Explorer for Silver, then Forge your Tactician, Silver, and Curse into the last remaining Province, winning the game. You wouldn't have been able to do that with Gold. (I imagine there could be a simpler example involving Upgrade or Expand.)

However, even apart from that, it's important for the card to have that text for absolute clarity, so that there's no confusion for when you don't have a Province in hand; it would also take more words. (It's the same way with Reactions and a few other cards as well.)

Treasure Map for me. The rest of the cards can be frustrating, but I find the swinginess of Treasure Map to be even more frustrating. Tournament can be the same way.

And if I wasn't playing on Isotropic, I would totally hate Fairgrounds, Vineyard, and all those hard-to-count Victory cards.

If anyone has a good way to play with philsopher's stone in a RL game let me know.  I've told my friends, "It's not a bad card, but I don't want to play with it because of how much it would slow down a real-time game.

Ditto. My sister really likes it, but I just get bugged by all the counting. Which is hypocritical of me because I love taking long turns, but more by doing stuff, y'know. Plus, I dislike the luck-based "decision" of whether or not to play any card-drawers, given that it reduces the Stone's value.

Of course, the card-counting is just the inverse of the problem with cards like Hamlet, which is their taking too long in computer play. Maybe the ideal Dominion program would actually be less "question-asking" and more like playing with real cards, just giving you some relevant numbers throughout (like the current size of your deck) and telling you when you can't do what you just clicked.
