Variants and Fan Cards / Re: Cards which increase prices.
« on: November 27, 2012, 08:05:22 pm »
I think a duration card which increases prices for opponents as well could be interesting, but I'm not sure how to make it fun rather than a paralyzing slog.

Maybe the text could read something like 'While a copy of <this card> is in play, all costs are increased by one'.  This way, multiple copies do not increase the costs further, the max increase is one.

Well, I don't really understand what you're trying to say about IKEA, but they have a large selection and everything is pretty cheap. I'm not ashamed to have IKEA furniture at all, beats spending double or triple the amount on having something unique.

He's saying he's surprised to learn that IKEA exists outside the United States. He thought that IKEA was a 'fake' European brand, to trick Americans into buying 'foreign', 'exotic' merchandise.

I always assumed it was a perfectly real brand, marketed to Americans, because 'those idiots will buy anything'.

Speaking of which, I'm quite sad I no longer live near an IKEA store.

I like playing with the entire Randomizer deck as the Black Market IRL.  Very cumbersome, but hilarity often ensues.  It's my favorite 'promo' promo card.

I like doing this too, but I sometimes (frequently?) forget to pull out the actual card until I spot a randomizer back in someone's hand.

Why is stash buffed with this suggestion? I don't quite see it.

As I understood the suggestion, Stash is buffed because when you trigger that reshuffle to draw during your turn, you can put Stash on top and draw it.  Then you allow another reshuffle, putting it on top again.  This is more obviously powerful with multiple Stash.

If you just need to look at the cards, you could visit http://dominion.diehrstraits.com/ to look at the sets you don't own.

As for the puzzle, I've got no clue.

There's no option for the promo cards.

Instead of Village/Smithy, you could play two Labs for the same result.

Not necessarily!

Prove it.

The puzzle does specify only one action card in hand, no cards in the draw deck.

No.  It specifies one action.

You have just played a village, then a smithy, and now have one action, 7 cards in hand, and no cards in your deck. None of the cards in your hand costs more than $6.

You may have any set of 10 kingdom cards you like. What is the most money (virtual+treasure) you can make this turn?

My best is $41.
Instead of Village/Smithy, you could play two Labs for the same result.  Gives you one more option for the Kingdom.

I have Seaside, and it comes with 15 Embargo tokens.

Mill (Or better name, to be decided)
Cost: 6$
Victory
At the end of the game, count the number of mills still in the supply pile.
Mill is worth 1 VP per mill remaining.

Sort of plays on the backstabbing aspect of power grid, where you can buy out resources from underneath each other. Could also serve as a way to deny other players points by buying them, but competes with gold.

Thoughts?

That's a brilliant card.

in a sort of related note, isotropic should cross the 10 million games played threshold about a week from today.
Still not even 1% of all possible kingdoms played.  ;D

Hm.  I'm getting 0.00000000534%.  That assumes that every single game had a unique kingdom.  Which, given the staggering number of possible combinations, is possible.

Even if it was 100% it would still be possible. I think you mean highly probably.

/pedantry

Yes, that is what I should have said.

I expect that in most cases, big money will dominate. I mean (assuming you aren't CC) how quickly can you build an engine that'll get at least 2 Provinces faster than a flat BM approach would?

Depends on the kingdom.

No, I already said 'most cases'. Your attempt to get more respect will not work against me, no sir.

Heh.  Actually, I think I'd agree with you until proven wrong by a simulator.

I second anything by Neil Gaimon, although suggest American Gods as the best!

I'll third the call for Neil Gaimon. Wonderful.

It's spelled Gaiman, in case anyone wants to look for his books.  Actually, I didn't like American Gods.  Not his best work.

EDIT: Wait, is that MtG?

And I like the shogi reference on the blackboard.

Variants and Fan Cards / Re: Iron Maiden
« on: November 03, 2012, 07:09:58 pm »
All of which is entirely irrelevant anyhow.  Iron Maiden is /not/ a 'choose two'.  It's a 'If this type...'.  I wouldn't automatically apply a ruling from one style of verbiage to another style of verbiage.  Key word there is automatically, of course.

I would look at something like Tribute, which deals with multiple cards, to find out if there's a specific order that should be applied.  The rules are silent on this point.  But again...  there's no reason to say anything.  The order in which bonuses can be taken cannot possibly matter.

How about Transmute?  Let's say I have Village, Transmute, Great Hall, Watchtower, and Upgrade in my hand.

I play a Village, and draw a Gold.  I Transmute my Great Hall.  What I would *like* to do is, using my Watchtower, first top-deck the Gold and *then* top-deck the Duchy.  That way, I can play Upgrade, draw my Duchy and upgrade it into a Fairgrounds and then play my Watchtower, drawing the Gold I need to buy the final Fairgrounds and clinch the game.  However, if I need to follow the card text, then I need to gain the Duchy before gaining the Gold, and I can't guarantee snatching the final two Fairgrounds.

Edit:  I originally Transmuted Harem, but that's the wrong dual type.  Great Hall works though.

That's the most perfect example possible.  I'm baffled how I missed Transmute.

And I would argue, barring a ruling from on high, that the rules for Trusty Steed does not necessarily apply here.  My reasoning is just that Great Hall is both types at the same time.  Not one, then the other.  That's simultaneous.

If your argument hinges on the fact that Pawn was from Intrigue, and Trusty Steed is from Cornucopia, thus the latter rule should take precedence, well, that is a pretty good reason, actually.  I just don't happen to consider it reason enough.

I don't like that the FAQ tells you to break the usual order.  Rules changes don't belong in the FAQ.  It would be better to list the Shelter type before the Victory type if you want the trashing to occur before drawing.  Personally, I would prefer simply not having an effect for Shelter or Curse type.

I also disagree with the FAQ mandating an order, but for a different reason.

I know you do cards in order, but wouldn't this be simultaneous events that you choose the order of?  I don't think listing one card type before another matters.

No, you do have to do them in order. I believe this is clarified on the Trusty Steed rules. You can't move your deck into your discard pile and THEN draw 2 cards.

*Edit*

Here's a thread about it. Interestingly enough, Pawn rules clarify that you can do either choice in either order (even though with the Pawn choices it never makes any different what order you choose). Donald says he wishes they were consistant, but too late now!

So there's no precedent here.  Any card for which it might matter (and on that subject, I looked through all the cards that are similar and there were none (other than Trusty Steed) for which it mattered) would have to specify which method it used.

Pawn, for example, doesn't matter.  +1 action, +1 buy, +1$ are all future potential.  +1 card is the only do-it-now.  Actually, Pawn and Trusty Steed are the only two that I could find that even have a 'choose two'.

This has taught me the right way to play handicap Dominion...  adjust the starting victory cards.  Messing with the starting coins is too large a handicap.

I think it is good though that they give you the option. Many unskilled Dominion players go for changing the points and not the coins. So, it is a good learning tool

Yes, I think so too.  Along that vein, if I can't win the game with a even board, I know that adjusting my coins is a better payout.
