Port + City Quarter

Not a crazy, broken interaction, but a nice way to quickly build up action density so that City Quarter draws a lot of cards.  Along that same vein, I haven't had a board with this particular two-card combo yet, but I assume that Magpie + City Quarter is also a "neat and potentially useful card interaction."

Game Reports / Strangest game of Dominion I've played in a while
« on: June 20, 2016, 01:46:12 pm »

I played this game against my wife the other day, and it was one of the most interesting Dominion boards I've played in a long time.  I don't usually post in this subforum, but this board seemed worth sharing.  What made this board really interesting was:
* Tactician is the only +buy
* Double Tactician is really good with Outpost
* Alchemist stack is also really good with Outpost, but Alchemists can't be placed back on top after playing Tactician
* You can buy Donate to get a slim, efficient deck
* The number of villages is quite limited when playing Double Tactician
* But if you bought a Coin of the Realm before you went Double Tac, you can use that as a one shot village
* Wolf Den makes you want to double up on things you wouldn't normally get two of, such as potion and Outpost
* Jester is good payload and can make piles run fast (which junks the decks), but unpredictably (which makes it hard to know when to get a second Donate)

Even having played the board, I'm still not sure what the best strategy here is.  My wife and I both did Double Tactician and skipped the Alchemists.  But a case could definitely be made for single Tactician with an Alchemist stack, or maybe even an Alchemist stack that just does single Province.  Which strategy do you think is best?  Does it depend on what your opponent does?

In my experience, Wild Hunt should be a lot higher, maybe even in the top group.  It's easy to make the comparison to Monument, which is an OK card, but not great.  But Monument is a stop card, while Wild Hunt is terminal draw, and that makes a huge difference.  On an engine board, you usually want Wild Hunts to be able to draw your deck, but at the same time you're also building yourself a points lead.

If A and B are both drawing their deck, but A has 6 Wild Hunts and B has 3, A is almost always winning.  The points accrued during building are very hard to overcome. (in my experience anyway)

#339 - Develop

Why is this guy talking to a statue? I don't think I would build out in that wasteland. The shapes of the sand dunes are funky and make the picture look weird.

The shape of the tower is questionable at best but I won't go into any further detail.

I'm pretty sure the guy on the left also has a transparent face.

Thanks Donald for an awesome expansion!

My wife and I played a bunch of Empires games in the last two days and we love it.  It sounds weird to say, but I really enjoy the feel of the tokens -- nice and heavy, but smooth.  For anybody worrying about the quality after Adventures, no need to.

Of course the game awesome too.  It's going to take a long time to really get a handle on how to play these cards well.

Dominate is really cool. It also feels very final to have something called Dominate in Dominion; I hope this doesn't mean this is the last expansion.

Windfall seems weak. If you're drawing your deck, you usually don't want Golds. But I could be wrong there.

Not weak at all.  It's a great way to add payload.  Way easier than lining up treasure maps.

Total game-changer.

Relic becomes action-treasure too, doesn't it? :)

Relic isn't an action card, so it's not affected by Enchantress.

Dominion: Empires Previews / Re: Empires Bonus Preview #2: Crown
« on: May 11, 2016, 02:04:54 pm »
Interesting fact:  Unlike any other Throne Room variant (including Counterfeit), Crown-in-buy-phase gives the exact same effect whether you Crown a Crown or play two Crowns separately.

Also, Crown+Capital is nuts, even better than doubling Platinum.

Here's an interesting question, if you Crown a treasure, can you call back Royal Carriage to play the Crown again and double another treasure?  My hunch is that you should be able to.

Here is ADK's preview from yesterday. I'm sure he will post it here when he and f.ds are up at the same time, but maybe we can start discussing it already.

I was thinking about this last night.  What would happen if you are resolving Black Market, play a Crown, crown-ing another Black Market?  Here's my best guess at what would happen:

  • First play of Black Market, which reveals cards A, B, and C (not technically taking them off the black market deck)
  • Crown is played, we choose another copy of Black Market to play twice
    • Second play of Black Market, which still reveals A, B, and C
    • A, B, and C are put on the bottom of the Black Market Deck
    • Third play of Black Market, which reveals D, E, and F
    • D, E, and F are put on the bottom of the Black Market Deck
  • If we try to buy A, B, or C, we fail due to Lose Track
  • When we try to put A, B, and C on the bottom of the deck, we again fail due to Lose Track

Does that sound right?

Anybody else hate the gladiator/fortune art?

Nothing against Kelli Stakenas as a person, but her other Dominion art is among my least favorite (Candlestick Maker, Masterpiece, Royal Carriage).

I do like the other 4 we got to see today though, especially the art for Rocks (creating a compelling picture of rocks isn't an easy thing to do!).

Dominion: Empires Previews / Re: Empires Bonus Preview #1: Villa
« on: May 09, 2016, 03:18:42 pm »
One thing that wasn't quite clear to me was this:

Suppose you buy Villa when you only have one buy.  When you return to your action phase, before you play Villa, do you temporarily have 0 buys?  Playing Villa then gets you a single buy to use when go to your buy phase a second time?

You always need to watch out for Villa pileouts.  They sneak up on you.

Dominion: Empires Previews / Re: Empires Previews #1: Debt
« on: May 09, 2016, 12:52:55 pm »
All of this debt seems really expensive to me. I wouldn't value being able to pay later and not buying anything till then so highly intuitively.

I like to think of it this way:  We often say that one good turn is better than two mediocre turns in Dominion.  With a debt-cost card, you can buy a powerful card on two mediocre turns instead of waiting until one good turn to get it.  And if you're playing with Capital, you can use it to spike pretty much whatever you want.  To get a really good card early, I'd gladly take a not-so-good turn next time.

Dominion: Empires Previews / Re: Teasers!

I know I just need to wait until it's released before making any judgments, but that sounds really bad.  I'm imagining a scenario where I begin my turn intending to gain card X, but fail to because I get outbid for it.  Unless I am in control of if/when bidding occurs on my turn, I just don't know if I'd care for that.

Personally, I thought Donald implemented these things in a very thoughtful way.  For me, it makes Dominion more fun, rather than less.

Other Games / Re: Temporum
« on: May 06, 2016, 10:11:49 am »
I'm not sure if the rulebook addresses this specifically, but perpetual cards are all "while this is in play"; so returning one to your hand is generally not good.

The rulebook said "When a player plays a Perpetual card, he ... puts the card in front of him on the table; it grants him an ability that lasts for the rest of the game."  So it wasn't clear, but it's good to know how that rule works.  Thanks!

My wife and I had a situation arise last night that we couldn't find the answer for in the rulebook.

Suppose that Industrial Revolution is in the game and I rule that time.  Can I play a perpetual card, return it to my hand, and still have the effect for the rest of the game?

94

I disagree with this. Partly because all the scenarios cannot be covered but mostly because the primary purpose of the engine is to play out interactions correctly and let the player learn from their misunderstanding of how it should have happened. This is what makes good players great. I mean, the next logical step is not just prevent the user from making a dumb play but to point the user towards the smart plays (e.g. you should buy a watchtower before doing X).

The thread topic is a perfect example. This is what people have learned as opposed to have been taught or handheld through.

With Goko/Making Fun, you never know if it's an obscure rule or a bug.

95
In your implementation you could have warning tooltips telling you what will happen if you pick different choices. You can have the option of ignoring tooltips you've seen before.

It would probably be impossible to cover even close to all the scenarios, but it would be great if the client gave warnings (warnings that can be disabled) that say things like "It looks like you're trying to Summon a Death Cart.  This may not work in the way you're intending. [maybe more explanation here]  Do you want to undo buying Summon?"

Variants and Fan Cards / Re: Recycling cards
« on: April 21, 2016, 12:47:33 pm »
I like it, but there are some tracking issues with Durations, which would still give you their effect next turn even though they would not be in play.

Hireling+Recycle would be nuts.  Like Hireling+Bonfire+Graverobber, except way easier.

Still, I like the novelty of it.

I had a blast at this tournament.  The kingdoms were very interesting (thanks WanderingWinder! for designing/choosing them) and the level of competition was quite high.  I'm actually really looking forward to replaying some of these kingdoms.

Goko Dominion Online / Re: Dominion Online 2p players demographics
« on: April 14, 2016, 10:36:08 am »
I don't know how you ran your stats, but particularly in the context of the Dominion Online 2017 thread, it would be very interesting to know what percentage of 2p games were base-only. This shouldn't be that difficult to figure out. What perhaps would be more interesting is what percentage of 2p games were played by a player who played most of their games base-only. That should give a reasonable indicator of how much of the playership is "free". Thats a little more difficult to calculate.

If we're just interested in rough estimate, we can assume that base-only games happen only when two non-paying players are matched up.  If matches are uniformly random among all players (which they're not since lower-rated players are both more likely to be matched with each other and more likely not to be paying, plus paying players probably play more games on average than non-paying players), then you can estimate the proportion of base-only players as the square root of the proportion of base-only games.

Obviously though, that's an extremely rough estimate.

Congratulations on getting the contract!  I'm very excited about this.  Contrary to many people, I feel like the pricing structure is well thought out.  I think this will actually entice me to finally buy the expansions online.

I had a dream the other night that JSH (who I've never met and I don't know why he was in my dream) had an advance copy of Empires.  All the cards were the size of those huge novelty playing cards.  One of the cards had a setup rule where you had to make chicken cacciatore for all the players before the game started.
