#196 - Inn

This is a nice, rustic piece of art. I hope this Inn has another source of revenue. That road doesn't look very heavily traveled.
There is something about the shading and style of this art. It's so simple yet effective. I'd easily rank this in my top 10.

Dominion is also shown in Me and Earl and the Dying Girl.

Fairgrounds still beats over half of these cards.
Fairgrounds beats every card listed so far.

#302 - Doctor

Doctor, doctor, give me the news....

I know you're sick, but let me autograph this ball for you.

This guy has the worst beard in all of Dominiondom. The scene is tilted funny and the doctor got all he wanted for Christmas, his two front teeth. Too bad those are his only teeth.
That dutch angle.

Overlord looks like Joaquin Phoenix Mark Cuban.

Gladiator should be Dumb Success Gladiator. Make a dumb move that pays off. Or was that the original joke?

Settlers/Bustling Village's picture is beautiful. What the heck? How did it end up this low?
Jessi J isn't doing as well as she should. Fairgrounds and Settlers/Bustling Village  randomizer are fantastic. It doesn't seem like the kids are rating her very well.

The closest Dominion has ever gotten to lowering in quality is when Adventures released with those awful cheap cards.

I don't know how much longer Donald can make great Dominion sets, but he is still going strong so far.
And the cardboard tokens. I would pay extra for separate metal tokens.

Sure, but that far fetched moment could be Villa or Mountain Pass to some (the latter actually matches your Charades example, though an auction is a lot less ridiculous). I don't think Dominion has jumped the shark, but I can see why some might feel that way and it's a reasonable question to consider for any game that has as many expansions as Dominion does.
I'm not even disagreeing with you. It is certainly reasonable to question whether the game has become too gimmicky or has declined in quality. My point about jumping the shark was more pedantic than substantive.

And yes, that analogy purposefully mirrored Mountain Pass.

The phrase "jumped the shark" simply makes no sense in this context.
If Donald ever runs out of good ideas but continues to release sets, then people would agree that the game had jumped the shark.
Running out of ideas, or a mere decline in quality, is not "jumping the shark."

However, the phrase has been stretched far beyond its original meaning over time, so I'll let it go. Obviously I understand what Tom was driving at and I disagree with his reasoning.

Definition from Google:

Quote
Jump the Shark
Informal
(of a television series or movie) reach a point at which far-fetched events are included merely for the sake of novelty, indicative of a decline in quality.

Isn't that the original meaning as well? Knowing the origin of the phrase, that's how I've always understood it. It applies to board games just fine, especially if there are a large number of expansions. The premier example is Carcassonne: Catapult, which adds a dexterity element to a game that nobody played for dexterity. If Catapult in Dominion involved tossing cards at the table (note: this has previously already been posted to the RBCI thread) then it might be a reason to apply the phrase to Dominion.

As it is, we've even seen experienced players get this feeling from Empires, e.g. during previews, Asper said that there were new elements that no longer felt like Dominion to him.
Yes, and my point was that a mere decline in quality is not jumping the shark. As the original definition applied to TV and movies states, there needs to be a far-fetched event or events that is indicative of the decline in quality. I already agreed the definition has been expanded to encompass basically anything that is far fetched and signals a decline in quality.

But simply because it doesn't "feel like" dominion doesn't mean it's jumping the shark either. There needs to be that actual jumping of the shark moment (such as Fonzie literally jumping a shark on a motorcycle). If Donald made a card where after the first province is gained everyone must stop and play a game of charades and the winner receives 8 VP, well that is far fetched.

EDIT: words

The phrase "jumped the shark" simply makes no sense in this context. It makes sense applied to TV shows and maybe books or other similar serial mediums, but expansions for a board game? Not following the analogy here.

Each expansion has always brought a new concept to the game. This is nothing unique to Empires. Duration cards. Mats. Potions. VP tokens. Colonies. On buy effects. Non-suppy cards. Ruins. Shepters. Coin tokens. Overpay. Reserve cards. Traveler cards. Events. And the list goes on.

Empires adds split piles, debt, and landmarks. That has finally crossed the line and is too gimmicky or fiddly? This is such a bizarre criticism for a game that just released its tenth expansion. The fact that the game continues to push the boundaries of the game and find new ways to keep the game fresh and balanced is remarkable for a game that has released 10 expansions.

With that said, having played a few games in person, split piles and debt are very easy to implement. Much easier than I expected. Landmarks can require more tracking, but is that a bad thing? If it is, don't play with them every game (or at all). If you're playing online, well the system will do most of the heavy lifting for you.

Well, at least 2.
Perhaps a family with the last name Farmer.

Both Borrow and Navigator could have easily been in group Z, but at least they are at the bottom of the next group.

Though there are plenty of cards I would put below Disciple (I can think of 3 just from the base set), I agree with much of your assessment.  The predominant brown theme is quite overwhelming. It must be quite boring to be a disciple of whatever group he has joined. I'm not sure why he is wearing a shower cap. I agree his eyes are creepy, like he is either in some kind of trance or just discovered something surprising.
Navigator would be last if I made a list, just barely edging out Harem on account of that card being so hilariously bad that I actually like it more over time.

Overall, I don't have many complaints with the list other than Fairgrounds, which is close to top 5 for me. I fscouting love Jessi J's card art.

How did the FDA let you get away with not printing the nutritional value of the cards on the box?
I can't believe they changed the recipe for the Adventures cards.

Otter in the court!

This show is fantastic.

What is it?

Bojack Horseman!
One of the best shows on right now. No surprise, but Will Arnett is made for voice acting. Second half of first season is incredible and the second season is even better.

So my local game shop said they'd get it last Friday. They didn't. Then they said they'd get it yesterday or today. They didn't. Now they're saying this Friday. I don't know what the deal with all that is, but I've been getting a bit angry and twitchy.

Oh, and I called another game shop not too far from me in Connecticut and they don't have it either. All I want to do is play this freaking expansion. So, I guess, all you forum goes will just have to tell me how awesome it is while I wait a year for either of the two game shops near me to get it.
I fully support buying from your FLGS, but Amazon and Cool stuff Inc both have it in stock last I checked and can likely ship it to you before the end of the week.

Honestly, I find Royal Carriage to be the worst of Kelli Stakenas' art - it looks like it was drawn in crayon. Her other stuff is fine.
The legs on the horse in Royal Carriage always crack me up. Looks like it's rolling an ankle (hoof).

I received my copy of Empires and dividers from Spielgeek yesterday. No quality issues with my copy.

I was able to get two games in last night. I'll post more in depth thoughts once I've had more time to play with the set, but initially I've got to say these cards are a lot of fun. I thought the debt mechanic might be cumbersome, but it works seamlessly. Fortune was great. When it starts hitting, man that card is a blast. Castles was also fun especially because we had no idea what strategy to use with those.

The landmark mechanic was also a big hit. These add so much variety to the game, not only conceptually but also physically with the placement of VP tokens on the cards. Player interaction with mountain pass was exactly what I hoped it would be. Defiled shrine was a hilarious game of chicken.

All around, this is the most fun I have had  with an expansion right out of the gate. Looking forward to playing with the rest of the cards.

Man. I want to purchase the entire set for Making Fun but it hardly seems worth it at this point with the change in pricing. If even contractually possible, I would love to see a drop in the rate as we get closer to next year. Hardly seems worth it to pay essentially $60 for the next 6 months ($100-$36 fee waiver next year).

Donald X has said this isn't possible because all of the contracts are already negotiated. Which makes sense: MF shouldn't be able to get paid for promising that ShuffleIT will provide a product to you in the future.

That MF can still sell the sets and ShuffleIT will honor those purchases for a year is already nicer to MF than it deserves. MF should never have been allowed to imply that people were getting "perpetual ownership of sets" when MF only had the license through the end of 2016 in the first place. I'm happy that the new Dominion Online will have a much more transparent pricing structure.
I completely agree. I strongly suspected that it wouldn't be contractually possible. I haven't played online since isotropic so what's wrong with waiting just a little longer.

#378 - Masterpiece

"Where's the Masterpiece?" asked one daughter. Another wondered if that might be Lumiere from Beauty and the Beast. If you look close, it could be a little face there on the candlestick.

I think here again we have an expectation problem. When I think of masterpieces, I would think of a painting or a sculpture or perhaps even a vase. Candlestick? Really? It's not even symmetrical. Then you have that weird curvy thing going on with the window next to it. I've seen curves like that at the top of windows but never at the bottom.
I always interpreted this as the Candlestick Maker's Masterpiece. You'll note that both cards have the same artist and are from the same set.

Surprised to see this as the second worst card. I actually sort of like the art. Even a candlestick can be a masterpiece to some.

Thank you for posting the high-resolution scans.

I have to say, other than a few cards, the art for this expansion is tremendous. The events and landmarks feature some of the best art in the entire game and almost all of the art for the events and landmarks is good to great (e.g., Annex, Bandit Fort, Defiled Shrine, Keep, Mountain Pass, Obelisk, Tower, Triumph, Windfall).

For kingdom cards, Castles is stunning from top to bottom and may be my favorite art of the set, if not all of Dominion. No matter how this pile actually plays, I cannot dislike these cards because of that art. Chariot Race, Enchantress, Overlord are also great and immediately memorable. Then getting the job done is Archive, Bustling Village, Catapult, City Quarter, Crown, Emporium, Encampment, Engineer, Farmer's Market, Forum, Legionary, Patrician, Plunder, Sacrifice, Settlers, Temple, Villa, and Wild Hunt.

Rocks and Capital are certainly not bad but they don't do much for me. Groundskeeper and Royal Blacksmith seem wonderful at first glance, but the anachronisms are frustrating and confusing.  At least the glasses on Royal Blacksmith don't seem too noticeable. Battlefield looks like they are fighting on a cloud. Wolf Den has a style of art that I generally like but the positioning of the wolves is strange. Charm has framing issues that makes the art look cluttered, in addition to the other complaints in this thread. Gladiator is actually not that bad by itself, but the art for Fortune is disappointing on so many levels, especially in light of the fact that this is such a unique and fun card.

EDIT: I actually like the Gladiator/Fortune randomizer art. In fact, all of the art for the split pile randomizers is really good. That settlers/bustling village randomizer art!

I've seen a few F bombs that I would have preferred not to see.

Well, if we go by movie rating logic, we can have one F bomb in the thread and it'll still be PG-13.

That said, she's 13, she almost certainly hears and/or uses "inappropriate" language every day at school.  I certainly did.  At home, too, for that matter.
Not to mention reading "F bomb" is essentially the same thing as reading the actual word. You acknowledge the actual word and probably say it in your head as well.

And by the actual word I of course mean falafel.

Oh my. Surely somebody has said it already, but I just realized: Possession+Donate is going to be so degenerate.

It shouldn't be a problem. Donate takes place after your turn, so if the Possessor has the Possessed player buy Donate, the Possessed player gets to decide what to trash.
Good guy possessor. Takes 8 debt tokens and let's me trash whatever cards I want.
Edge case. That's what he wants me to do so that I clean my deck up for him.
