Iello produces an english version for the UK/Australia.
And yet I have the Asmadi version. (Although I think I first saw the Iello one in shops and completely passed it over, probably in favour of a Dominion expansion.)

Would you go so far as to say that if you don't get some Shelters that you'll fade away?
I'm so sorry your post was the second last on the page, so you didn't get the satisfaction of seeing it appreciated. I've +1'ed it out of sympathy for you poor devil.

Assuming that's 6 ...
7. All the cards on your Island mat are worth their coin value in points.
8. Instead of playing a card, you can instead gain a card of value equal to the highest cost of any card you have out.
9. The game doesn't end on piles or Provinces.
10. If you would gain a value of card and its pile is empty, you gain a card of value one higher instead.
11. If you would gain a card of value higher than 10, the game is over.

Still got a bit more to work in there (haven't even touched on symbols or colours and splaying).

I think explaining Innovation in terms of Dominion is akin to explaining Formula 1 racing in terms of Darts, but here's a start.

1. Have only 10 Kingdom cards to choose from.
2. Each pile of Kingdom cards is like Knights, in that each card is unique.
3. Also, all of the Kingdom cards are Duration type, and stay out indefinitely.
4. Cards don't normally have an effect when you play them, but once they're out you can choose to activate an effect on them.
5. You gain cards to your hand rather than your deck.

This is surprisingly hard.

Oh, and we'll still be finding edge cases and making memes.
In the reverse order.

Puzzles and Challenges / More states?
« on: March 05, 2013, 06:56:09 pm »
So which state is missing from this list?

Alabama
Arkansas
California
Colorado
Delaware
Georgia
Hawaii
Indiana
Louisiana
Maine
Massachusetts
Michigan
Missouri
Nebraska
Oregon
Pennsylvania
South Carolina
Virginia
Washington
Wisconsin

The hint being two territories that also broadly meet the criteria for inclusion: Puerto Rico and Virgin Islands

1184
Hawaii is incorrect.  Geography, oddly, does not matter.

A further hint:  non-US residents are likely to have trouble because they don't know the state abbreviations.
Funnily enough I'd suspected this was the case, although I'd been thinking in a different direction.

Innovation Articles / Re: Turn 0 (Article)

I'll put down a big "It depends" for # of players for some of those, although I assume you're writing for a 2-player game only. In 3 and 4 player games, Writing drops a lot in priority because its ability to "tech up" is weakened by the larger number of people able to draw 1s that will result in everyone being able to draw 2s soon anyway, while all of the Castle-based cards shift up a little bit because there's a much higher chance of someone else using a dogma you can share.

1186
Do you have a FLGS? If so, and if you can't find it in-store (and check if they have an online catalogue too), try asking them to order it in.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: "Missing the reshuffle"
« on: March 04, 2013, 05:08:24 pm »
The cards most at risk of missing the reshuffle are Duration cards, particularly those that draw (like Wharf), because they can miss the reshuffle not only when you draw your deck during the turn you play them, but if you reshuffle in the Clean-up phase. To demonstrate that, consider the case if you open Wharf/nothing on 5/2. Then there are three scenarios:

1: You play Wharf turn 3. You've drawn 7 of the 11 cards in your deck this turn, so in Clean-up you draw the remaining 4, reshuffle, and draw 1, with the Wharf still out. Then in turn 4 you draw 2 more cards, leaving 4 cards in your deck if you bought something turn 3 and only now does Wharf get cleaned up and reshuffled into the deck, giving it a 1 in (size of your deck minus 4) chance of being in your Turn 5 hand.

2: You play Wharf turn 4. This causes you to draw the last 2 cards in your deck, so you will definitely shuffle in Clean-up, and so your Wharf has missed that reshuffle and unless you have good draw will not be in your hand for at least another couple of turns.

3: You play Wharf turn 5. In this case, Wharf already missed the reshuffle, and in other respects this behaves like the first scenario.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Analyze That Board! #1
« on: February 26, 2013, 12:43:28 am »
I suppose it depends how enginey you're going, then. Certainly the WWs will be pretty ineffectual until you've successfully transitioned to the engine deck - a mess of Silvers, Traders, Lookouts, GMs, Goons, Tributes, WWs and any Coppers or Estates you haven't trashed out yet.

As for emptying Silver, I have realised that if you're trying, the piles are more likely to come from GM, WW, Estate and Curse, especially in a mirror match. I was thinking of 3-piling Silver with a more powerful engine (i.e. one that doesn't exist on this board) where you'd have tons of +Buy and a Trader in hand (where the Silvers are, for whatever reason, more desirable in your deck than the cheaper cards you'd be buying otherwise - maybe something like Apprentice?)

Thinking about it again, the biggest problem with using Wishing Well for the draw in an engine is that the engine is going to have a number of different pieces so it will be difficult to guess accurately particularly often, so you can't really expect strong draw. Thus, I'm thinking about sticking to the Lookout/Trader into Goons/GM strategy, but with the aim of as much as possible Tradering and Lookouting the buys and aiming for a 3-pile on maybe Copper, Curse and Silver (tricky as that may be, possibly swap one of those for Estates). I'd expect to only play one Goons per turn, but try to get two or maybe three in the deck due to the dilution that Trader will initially bring.

Rules Questions / Re: Swindler and 0* Cost Cards
« on: February 25, 2013, 05:04:26 pm »
I think the general rule is that if there are at least two cards at the same pay point such that one of them is really desirable and the other is not, then Swindler is often a good choice. Of course there's always Copper/Curse particularly if there's no easy way to get rid of the Curses, but the presence of 0* cards definitely sweetens the pot.

Japan's a nice country - at least, what I saw of it over two weeks in the holidays was nice - but given how hard it was to communicate I can only imagine what it's like for someone who doesn't know any of the language.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Analyze That Board! #1

I think I'd go Lookout/Trader to get a couple of GMs quickly, then go for WW for draw and probably a Tribute for village to get into double Goons to buy out Provinces. The thing is, once you have at least one each of GM and Goons, you can start using the Lookout to trash both the Trader and the Silvers, thinning the deck back to help get the Goons going as well as making the WWs hit more reliably. I would be *marginally* tempted to try to hit $6 with Trader in hand to get Farmland/GM or Farmland/Goons, but obviously that's a pretty far stretch (and is almost certainly a worse play than just buying the GM or Goons in the first place).

I am pretty sure that engine beats BM on this board, especially since any engine using Goons will slow down the BM strategy heavily (as well as making the game last longer), but it's a pretty fragile engine until you get it going.

We'd done the Ambassador thing, were clearly building up to some Highway/Mining Village/Bridge megaturn madness ... and then I realised that with $2 for a Province and a couple of spare Buys ...

Innovation General Discussion / Re: Is this all luck?
« on: February 21, 2013, 05:16:05 pm »
Luck is definitely a bigger factor in Innovation than it is in Dominion, but the focus is still on working out how to exert the little control you do have over things for the biggest effect. And don't forget that there are multiple paths to victory - if your opponent has a nice scoring engine using only Age 1/2 cards, try to tech up to get to a more interesting age (and remember he can't achieve a higher Age without a card of at least that Age himself). If all else seems lost, try to get to Ages 8-10 and try for either a Fission wipe of the board or a non-standard win. And if your opponent is spamming Agriculture, one of the best things you can do a lot of the time is to *not* share it - sure you get some score of your own, but you also give him another card in hand so he can spam the dogma faster, and probably get him to the next Age to achieve too.

EDIT:
On the runaway leader problem, I've seen either Carl or Chris (Innovation's Donald and Jay, approximately) say that it was designed this way to an extent - yes if one player gets a bit of a lead there's still a chance to claw back victory, but if that lead gets big enough that their win is practically guaranteed the game helps a little in speeding things up to that inevitable end.

Dominion Articles / Re: Highway
« on: February 20, 2013, 05:54:31 pm »
The "affects on less cost" category may normally be nombos, but sometimes you may want to avoid the effect and Highway can help with that - say you want to use Develop on a $3 to top-deck a $4, but don't want to have an Estate on there too. Play 3 Highways, you're now Developing a $0 into a $1 and a $-1, which of course gives you just the card you want.

With Convocation, if you reveal an Action, a Treasure and a Tunnel, do you have the option of discarding the Tunnel? I would think not.
If you reveal 2 Coppers and a Tunnel, do you have the option of discarding the Tunnel? I would think so.

It just seems like an interesting quirk.
I kind of like that. Although, if the revealed Action was also a Reaction, then you *could* discard the Tunnel. Actually, I quite like the card in general, because it doesn't quite match any existing card and it looks like one of those cards that's hard to use right, but powerful when you do.

Hamlet + NV + PH + PH + Province is "golden".
You can also substitute Oasis for the hamlet.
Duh, of course it is. I don't know why I tried to complicate it. And as I pointed out, both Hamlet and Oasis are nice PH enablers (Hamlet probably marginally more so).

Is there a pedantic man meme for edge case memes?

Or should it just be a picture of the f.DS logo?
I think the Inception scene is the best we have for that so far. I was kind of hoping there'd be something for "There's an app for that" where you could change "app" to "edge case", but I don't think there is.

I'm going to start a band of hipster coal miners. They'll be really underground.

I planned to call my band of hipster coal miners "Black Canary" but it died. That was probably my first warning sign.

I finally decided to call the band "Polonium". We're real heavy metal.

I tried to book "Polonium" into a gig, but apparently the club doesn't allow miners in.
