Game Reports / How lucky was I? Was my opponent right?
« on: July 10, 2012, 10:19:25 pm »
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201207/10/game-20120710-191235-ef000eb4.html

I just finished a game, where I won pretty easily. Part of it was pulling awesome stuff out of BM (I got Throne Room, Nobles and Tournament on a board w/ no villages, he got Native Village) but I maintain that my opponent lost in large part due to strategy. I went Amb/Amb, he went Potion/Amb for Familiar. My ambs didnt collide and I was able to clean out my deck and get some early Labs and eventually won going away. As I was winning my opponent started bemoaning my good luck, and I noted that I'd been very lucky with BM (and at avoiding Amb collision), but he had a different take on the game. However, my claim was that regardless of RNG luck, he was going to be in trouble because I was going to be able to clean out my deck while his was going to be junked up (by potion and losing Amb tennis). Thoughts?

22:06 shaytalis: sigh  You get all the luck
22:06 shaytalis: all the good cards from black market, you get 5 money in hand over and over early game, you always have ambasador + curse in hand
22:07 mgallop: I got lucky w/ BM
22:07 mgallop: but I think choosing to go Familiar in an ambassador game is a bad idea
22:07 shaytalis: Not just that, but you got to buy laboratory
22:08 shaytalis: that's what won it for you
22:08 shaytalis: You got to buy 3 of those early game
22:08 mgallop: possible
22:08 shaytalis: absolute
22:08 mgallop: but I also got double Amb
22:08 mgallop: which was huge
22:08 shaytalis: just dumb luck :/
22:08 mgallop: and you got potions which are basically curses
22:08 shaytalis: double amb is nothing
22:08 shaytalis: compared to you lucking out with 3 labs in the first few turns
22:09 mgallop: lab isnt any good if your deck is full of crap
22:09 shaytalis: Lab is what won you the game
22:09 shaytalis: lucking out and getting 5 $ over and over to pile them on is what won you the game
22:09 shaytalis: getting extra lucky and getting all the best cards, including tournament, from black market was just gravy
22:10 shaytalis: I can't win when you're that lucky
22:11 shaytalis: 3 labs... ambassador + curse in hand within 1 turn of getting any curse every time, all the best cards from black market...
22:12 shaytalis: enjoy the free win due to random dice :/

Help! / Re: I will try to post a game here every day.

Weird board, not totally sure what I'd do, especially considering the opponent got the 5-2 split which seems insane there.

-I'm pretty sure YW is wrong because of Amb and Chapel. I also didnt like using the Governor to remodel on t5 given the Chapel and general speed of the game. I might have tried to leverage your opponents 5-2 by going Amb/Amb or Amb/Silver and then transition to Governors.

-In terms of greening, I think on turn 10 you want to remodel gold into prov instead of buying harem (and buy caravan I guess) and I think given tunnel and gov that you want to buy harem pretty much always instead of gold: you had a good shot to win if you split the provinces but you have to go for them pretty early since Gov rarely slows down.

-Also, I don't think Jack is quick enough vs Gov and Chapel.

Help! / Re: BM Embassy goes surprisingly poorly
« on: July 10, 2012, 09:56:02 am »
Thanks for the advice, just had another game where the best strategy was clearly BM Embassy, and getting 2 embassies more early gold worked way better (4th by turn 12, 5th by 15), though partly I had ridiculous luck avoiding embassy collisions. I was right to just ignore him getting an early noble brigand because that card is not good/fast enough to slow me down, right?

Help! / BM Embassy goes surprisingly poorly
« on: July 10, 2012, 01:20:45 am »
I was playing a game vs a lower ranked player today on Iso and the board was pretty boring but there was Venture and Embassy so I decided to go big money, whereas he went some really odd strategy involving lighthouse, golem, workshop and explorer. So I expected to just nonchalantly crush him, but somehow things went pear-shaped, I didnt get the 4th province until turn 15 or win until 19 and there were a number  of turns where if my opponent got 8 he could have won (notably turn 17 and 18.)

Was this a case of me snagging a province too early (took one with first embassy draw on t5) instead of buying a gold or venture? Do I want venture over gold in this type of deck? Anyway, I'm not sure what went wrong and would like some insight.

Game Reports / Re: I have no clue how I won this game

Makes sense. So in general, when you're ahead in Torturer games when to do you want to pivot to improving your buying power (either with conspirator or with Gold). Do you just pound hamlet w/ <5, torturer w/ 5+. Taking Gold w/ an early 6 seems good (as it usually is), but ending the game with only 3 torturers after such an early lead seems suboptimal.

This was a superweird game where opponent opened 5-2 Torturer-Hamlet vs my 4-3 Hamlet-Steward, and I was almost completely sure I was going to lose until the very endgame.

Does my opponent mess up by getting conspirators too early instead of just overloading on Hamlet/Torturer to destroy me and then later building his economy?

Game Reports / Double Tac vs Ghost Ship

I thought this was a pretty cool game. Opponent opened w/ 5-2 split and bought Ghost Ship, so I went Masq + Well to counter. And transitioned into peddler based double tact engine to win pretty comfortably.
