Dominion General Discussion / Re: Buying Copper w/ Apothecary?
« on: August 10, 2012, 08:15:26 pm »
Here'd be a recent example: 1 Market + Caches + Apothecaries, w cellar and Menagerie for digging, 5 provinces + duchy by turn 14.

Yeah, I'm also going to have to take a controversial pro-Mountebank stand, since it both requires an extra HP to get past the curse, but it also makes it less likely you get the necessary HP to start a stack in 5 cards. I'd be much more sanguine about skipping witch, but M'Bank gives out so much junk.

Dominion General Discussion / Buying Copper w/ Apothecary?
« on: August 08, 2012, 08:58:52 pm »
Under what circumstances do you guys advise picking up Copper with Apothecary, if I have enough apothecaries I'll often pick some up as long as they dont conflict, but I think I might be wrong.

http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201208/08/game-20120808-175238-b14bc85d.html

This was a game where I got 2x Wharf + Apothecaries and Cartographers, and was able to pick up 6 provinces by turn 18 through an opponent who picked up 10 minions. But he informed me that

20:50 VetoPossession: your straergy is asssinine and terible
20:52 VetoPossession: how absurd
20:52 VetoPossession: gratsx idiot.

I'm not sure what happened on his minion turns since the gamelog doesnt pick up his draws.

Anyway, is picking up copper just terrible? Situationally ok?

-Trading post opening definitely seems right, since trading post openings are awesome, however, with that opening, I think I use the trashing and bonus silvers to rush a province and win a tournament, since it makes it easy to connect and gives you money. Unfortunately, you got unlucky with TP missing the shuffle and he got 5 coppers to hit one on t3. I do think if I see a 5-2 opening with trading post, mirroring seems great because you're just gonna be faster and more consistent. Festival seems alright, but TP seems better since after 1 play you have the same number of dead draws (terminal/treasure/vp) for peddler as if you buy something else.
-I think issue with peddler forge is that its kind of slow, especially to get forge, and focuses a lot on dicking around, which is usually a losing strategy with Tournament out. By the time you got your first forge, he has 2 provinces, and the requirements to double province with forge + money are pretty steep. Mostly tournament just is that good.
-Getting 1-2 schemes seems fine. If you're peddler rushing, I might keep buying hamlets at 3 though since each one gets another peddler once you're hitting 4 actions.

Seems like a combination of bad luck (with your opener) and your opponents strategy just being strong.

I might add in 2 coppers, so that you start getting provinces slightly early and can go Province + Apoth in the late game game. That + being able to grab Golems which are either Apothecary +, or 2 Apothecaries should allow you to push through the greening pretty easily.

So my thoughts are:
open Herbalist/Potion
grab apothecary ASAP
when you have at least 1 apothecary and you have a chance grab golem
get up to 9 coppers

My intuition would be to open Potion/Herbalist, possibly pick up a 2nd potion, and then get a bunch of Apothecaries + Golems taking copers with extra, and possibly a salvager to accelerate the endgame.

Game Reports / Ridiculous Wharf Game? Sounds like time for thief
« on: August 07, 2012, 02:25:35 am »
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201208/06/game-20120806-232049-63575118.html

I found this game pretty amusing. The basics were that opponent opened Wharf/Hamlet to my Cutpurse/Lookout, and I was playing catchup for a good chunk of the time. We eventually both developed engines, mine was a bit more consistent thanks to throne rooms, but he had spent more time buying money and had just double provinced. So I picked up thief, and was able to thrown it on the next turn, stealing a gold and trashing a copper. From that point his engine was single provincing and mine was double provincing, and I beat him by one point. Anyway, there were probably better lines, but I was pleased.

Game Reports / Re: Mint/FG vs Swindler/Familiar
« on: August 05, 2012, 03:40:23 pm »
Thats fair. My thought process was that getting familiar would allow me to attack multiple times a turn, and that I'm be able to get stables pretty quickly which meant I didnt really want double swindler.

Game Reports / Mint/FG vs Swindler/Familiar
« on: August 05, 2012, 12:05:32 pm »
So, just beat opponent who played first w/ Mint/FG opening, and I'm pretty pleased. Caveats are:
-I hit 3P on turn 3 for familiar.
-I swindled an FG on turn 4.
-Opponent didnt draw FG w/ Mint on first shuffle.

Still, its a terrifying opening, and I was pretty pleased I was able to fight through it, and get his deck back to bloated and slow enough that I could get 5 provinces first.

Peddler. Ghost Ship, Cache, Pirate Ship, Young Witch, Cutpurse, Shanty Town (Bane) , Apothecary,Embargo, Haven, Transmute

Or, how to be really mean to someone because you're a huge jerk.

Opponent gets 4/3, opens potion on a board w/ transmute, apothecary. I get 3/4 open Embargo, then he gets a silver, I get Young With w/ Shanty Town as the Bane.

So, I just got matched w/ someone who had the PCE that prevented not only disabling but also me checking details, which to my mind seems kind of outrageous, has anyone else noticed this?

Dominion Isotropic / Re: Why do so many people decline automatches?
« on: August 02, 2012, 02:42:41 am »
Personally, if someone declines an automatch with me because they don't like the board I will decline all subsequent automatches with that person. Every once in a while I will decline an automatch based on the board (mostly if its a torturer board and I just played one, or something like that, or if I only have a limited time and it looks like an unpleasant slog). Anyway, thats my own not particularly good justification for doing it.

So, just finished a really interesting (insanely powerful) kingdom:

Develop, Tunnel, Swindler Tournament SalvagerQuarry Mountebank Minion Saboteur

http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201207/30/game-20120730-164901-8df0ef2d.html

Opponent opened Quarry/Swindler I opened Tournament/Swindler. I got early provinces and he didnt and I won pretty easily.

-My thoughts are that quarry, while guaranteeing you Mountebank by the first shuffle is a massive liability with tournament, since you want Gold and Provinces ASAP, and that my decision too ignore it is what won me the game.
-Opening buy: what's right? I liked Tournament as both something I needed to get and helping get to 5. Salvager is potentially useful, but potentially loses me the game by stopping me from getting a mountebank by the first shuffle.
-Develop: I got one, it sucked. Should I have just ignored trashing and powered through the slog? Gotten Salvagers over tournament at some point (though salvager is just as bad at getting rid of mountebank junk).
-How good is followers once curses are exhausted? I got it after Steed, but I'm not sure that was right, and think Bag of Gold might have been better to ensure I kept getting provinces.
-Minion: just awful, or useful as nonterminal silver + attack in this boaard? My thoughts are that your 4 card hand is liable to suck given the junking, and that nonterminal silver isnt worth it. I could be wrong.

Game Reports / Re: Dear My Opponent: I am Sorry

Possibly a mistake at that point, but my goal is to junk up his deck with as many terminal actions as possible, and so my thoughts are that allowing him to remove woodcutters/coppers/curses seems less useful than just continuing to clog the deck. And herbalist as the only action seems pretty miserable. I could be wrong tho, estate would also hurt.

I really like FT is most potion games, especially as P1, because of the chance to just make their potion skip the shuffle. Especially in Scrying Pool games where you don't want silver at all, and where if you get it and they don't its going to be very hard for them to get a good split. It seems even awesomer with Familiar simply because it gives you additional chances to mise them not getting familiar before the reshuffle.

Yeah... With the swindler game at least only 2-3 potions remain in the deck, rather than 15.

« on: July 28, 2012, 09:42:45 pm »
I just finished a really really sloggy game. Ambassador + Apothecary + Outpost, with University and Ironworks to pick up mining villages. I made a number of mistakes (both missing a university play early and being too lazy to sculpt some outpost hands w/ apoth), but won estate tennis and then proceeded to dump an additional 15 potions into his deck. The worst part was that Apothecary and Mining Village are MISERABLE to cantrip with, but I can't think of a better exit strategy to end the game guaranteeing the win. Finally I grab a province and end it w/ potions piling.

Game Reports / Successfully added cards to DoubleJack!
« on: July 28, 2012, 01:47:10 pm »
I was playing on a board where Jack was the clear best strategy, and I opened 5-2. I didnt want to open Jack/nothing so I went Mine/Crossroads, then after the first shuffle, I improved some treasure and bought 2 Jacks. Opponent opened Jack/Silver, but I was able to outrage him (with a few terminal collisions) getting the 4th province on turn 12 and the 5th on turn 15 to win.

http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201207/28/game-20120728-103517-5c47af93.html

A few questions:
-Did I get lucky/have an unduly small number of collisions?
-Opponent doesnt get 4th province in 14 turns, what happens?
-Royal seal with Jack? On the one hand it lets you topdeck gold (Good!) on the other its just another silver that slows down your ability to cycle through the deck playing a bunch of Jacks, is it worth it?

Dear IMUNaware,
Sorry about me saboteuring you many many many times... There was an opportunity for a really cool vineyards deck (Border Village, Upgrade, Alchemist) but the lack of + buys meant that just Monumenting and Saboteuring a million times w/ Throne Room seemed like the best way to do things...

http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201207/26/game-20120726-100519-764a5249.html

Look on the bright side, if vineyard wasnt there, then Saboteuring Alchemist would be even meaner...

So, my thoughts with that board are that you only want to pick up GMs once you have KC/Mountebank going, and then use them, and therefore I like Quarry and I really like Courtyard. Courtyard does a better job of ramping you to the early Mount/KC buys then silver, helps you slog through Mountebanked decks, and doesnt slow you down when you hit your stride like Silver does. Most importantly it allows you to connect KC and Mount. Once thats set up, you can buy a GM for the extra buys, but focus on getting tons of KCs, 2 Mounts, a few GMs, and a few Courtyards. And once you get going you can guarantee you have either a KC or a KC target on top for next turn.

I think given tunnel and gov that you want to buy harem pretty much always instead of gold

I don't think I understand the reasoning here.

I'll take a stab at it.

You can get free Gold from Tunnel and Governor, so you don't need to buy it.  Harem is a good buy because it is also at $6, which means you can remodel it into a Province like Gold, but it is also a VP so it is really helpful endgame if you don't get around to remodelling it.

That was what I was thinking. Given the remodel endgame you need to keep buying 6s, when you hit (especially given how many govs you have), Harems help you win if you split the provinces, and you should have enough Gold that the 1 money difference isn't worth the VP.
