Rules Questions / Re: when does Idol give out curses?

The answer is that opponent had a Lighthouse in play. I checked it by loading the game (149974582).

It's a new situation. It also wasn't uncontested. The model for any "as if" effect in a game is hard, because it's sometimes not very clear how exaactly you 'pretend' that something is.

Shadow cards seem to be very interesting for rule questions. I already have some :D

- Can I choose a Shadow card with cards like Contract, Farmhands, Delay, Prince? Especially Prince could be useful in some cases.

No to all of them. All of these cards set aside a card from your hand now to play it a later time. The effect now is to set it aside, so it doesn't count for Shadow cards. Throne Room, Royal Galley, Crown etc. would all work.

- Conditions must be met, right? So I can't play a Ninja with Conclave, if I already have a Ninja in play. I can't play Alley with Invasion, but Ninja is allowed.

All correct.

- What about Voyage? In a Voyage-Turn, I first play a Ninja from the bottom of my deck. How many cards can I play afterwards, 2 or 3?

3. You have played 0 cards from your hand at that point, so you can still play 3 from your hand.

Note that once you have actually played 3 cards from your hand, you cannot play shadow cards from your deck. You wouldn't be able to play them if they were in your hand, so you cannot play them from your deck, because the condition "as if in your hand" says "no, not allowed".

Rules Questions / Re: Gaining and revealing a Loot
« on: July 01, 2024, 03:02:39 am »
The rulebook is not trying to define a "when-gain" ability, it is trying to explain, in understandable wording, that what Loot you gain is public knowledge, including the cases where the actual movement of the card would make it not go to a public zone.

You play the Estate, but nothing happens, as the Estate doesn't have any text say what happens when you play it.

This is analogous to the situation of the Clashes having the Patient trait, which is handled in the wiki entry for Territory:

Quote
If the Clashes are Hasty or Patient, then that may lead you to play Territory. This normally means nothing, but it will still trigger Adventures tokens (e.g. Pathfinding), count as a card you've played this turn (e.g. for Landing Party), and counts as a card in play (e.g. for Tools).

If you have Black Market, then suddenly you are confronted with much more cards than in a normal kingdom. It's not about what experienced player find complicated, it's what inexperienced ones find complicated. Of course, it can still be debated for each card what level it should be.

Hi Narz,

roughly 2 years ago (when introducing the Allies expansion), the model for the "half full" subscription changed from being a set of expansions (generally the earlier ones) to a set of cards (the less complicated ones). At that time the name also changed from "Silver/Gold" to "Core/Complete".

The dominion cards are divided into 10 levels, where level 1 is just the base set, level 2 introduces no new concepts but has more relatively simple cards, then level 3 has choices, a.s.o. Together with other changes to automatch, this was intended to ease new players better into the game in potentially 10 steps instead of previously 3 (Base and Silver/Gold subscription). You can find all the cards of each level when clicking the "View Card Pools" button on the automatch screen (upper middle area of the screen). The Core subscription is levels 1-5 of cards.

Black Market is at the highest level 10 of cards. Sometimes cards are moved between levels, usually when discovering a mistake (like one card using debt was at a lower level than when debt was introduced). I'm not aware of a change to Black Market (but it could be). I can ask about that if you want.

Rules Questions / Re: Trickster + Capital
« on: May 08, 2024, 05:20:24 am »
Exactly.

What players (me included) usually pyhsically do when they have a Trickster in play and it is time to do cleanup, is to select a Treasure card (say a Gold), set it aside and put their other cards in play into their disard pile (assuming no other cleanup effects, duration cards, etc).

This is technically wrong!

Technically the Treasure card is discarded, and then gotten out of the discard pile and set aside from there. Doing it "wrong" physically for the overwhelming number of cases where Trickster is the only discard related effect for that Treasure card (and so doing it that way doesn't matter) may condition players to incorrectly assume that that Treasure card isn't discarded when it actutally matters (like with Capital).

11
Yes, the non-Clashes Allies split piles can be rotated by their top card if they are the Ferryman pile.

12
Yes, most cost redurcers are only active during turns. I think only the Cheap trait works during counting, so watch out then (Cheap Border Guards don't count, but Cheap Stockpiles do).

ADD: I forgot Favors placed by Familiy of Inventors, AFAIK they also work when counting. It's not 100% clear since the only card that looks at costs when counting is Plateau Shephards, so they cannot be in the same game. But of course another future card may care about cost when counting points.

Yes, Reckless (and generally discard related triggers) are know to not work correctly when it's not the turn of the player who played them.

Rules Questions / Re: Errata to extra turns
« on: October 08, 2023, 06:16:24 am »
New question.

Alice played Possession.
She gained Province.
Bob played Black Cat as a Vassal(Way of the Mouse).
He discarded Outpost to play it.
Between turns, He chose 4-card Outpost turn to resolve first.
On the Outpost turn, he played another Outpost.

Q1. Does he take another Outpost turn?

Yes. The second Outpost turn (if he choses to take it before the Possessed turn) would be his 2nd turn in a row, so is not prevented.

Q2. If Q1 is true, after his 2nd extra turn, does he take a Possessed turn? (It will be the 3rd turn in a row, not the 2nd one in a row.)

No, the Possession turn will not be taken. It would be his 3rd extra turn in a row and Possession prevents that. It was deemed overkill to word it as "2nd, 3rd,.... extra turn in a row", as your scenario is really rare. The same is true for the other rewordings, that means in the following situation

normal turn, play Outpost,
Outpost turn, buy Seize the Day
Seize the Day turn, activate Island Folk

you don't get an Island Folk turn, it would be your 4th turn in a row.

Outpost doesn't let Bob take an extra turn, right?  Then, what makes Lich skip Outpost turn?

As far as I understand it, Lich and Outpost et. al. work on the same principle: An extra turn that is about to happen now will not happen if certain conditions are met. So if an "about to happen now" Outpost turn would both be the third for its player in a row and the first after that player played Lich, both effects can could apply. Whichver is chosen to prevent the turn wins, the other effect remains.

Of course, since Outpost only cares about the turn it created, if Lich is chosen to prevent the turn, Outpost's effect is meaningless now (the turn it might have prevented was prevented in another way). If it's done the other way around (Outpost's "no third in a row" prevented the turn), Lich's effect remains and will prevent the the next turn of that player.

I have to say I'm not sure if the ruling is that Lich always applies first, or if that is just the "always better for the player" choice, considering current cards.

Of course, sorry to hear you had such a bad experience.

You can now blocklist a player (or spectator) while the game is still going. On the lower right is a list of icons, one being 3 "meeples" and a number, showing the number of spectators. If you click on that, you see all players and spectators, and can friendlist them (heart) or blocklist them (lightning bolt).

As with similar cards that allows you to gain cards, it indicates gainable cards by "+" signs in the supply (as would happen if you had played your Treasures and the game shows you which cards you could buy).

The "Gain 2 Silvers" option is an extra button so that when you click on a Silver, the game doesn't need to ask you if you want another one.

Rules Questions / Re: Losing track of Trail
« on: June 19, 2023, 02:23:28 am »
Correct on both accounts and for the correct reasons.

Gains are always happening one after another. Discards usually (always?) happen at the same time, and trashes can be either (Chapel: at the same time, Monastery: one after another).

Rules Questions / Re: Buying Rush twice - can it help?
« on: April 04, 2023, 01:51:30 am »
Buying Rush twice without gaining an Action card in between doesn't do anything more than buying it once (except lowering your $). The Temple Gates implementation is wrong about this.

Yes, unfortunately some change (not exactly sure what happened) has lead to that state which makes the forum unusable. Stef has been informed.

Yes, gaining a card directly into play and playing would cause questions exactly like this: What happens when the card is moved afterwards with Watchtower etc.

I wasn't aware of the examples you gave for previous use of the semicolon; those usages are at odds with the new one.
