Dominion Videos and Streams / So I guess I am one of you now :>
« on: June 01, 2013, 07:51:43 am »
Good evening ladies and gentlemen. I finally decided that I want to put Dominion videos on my youtube-channel too.
I started doing some Mincraft and Antichamber Let's Plays on youtube a few months ago. In the beginning the main reason was to improve my terrible spoken english, but now I mainly do it because it is fun. I do not have a huge channel (42 subscribers at the time of this writing), but anyways, I decided to do two different playlists for my dominion games. One for the viewers who do not know Dominion or do not know Dominion too well, where I explain the basic rules of the game, the main strategies, "advanced" strategies, the cards and when or how to use them and so on. And then another one for the viewers who already know Dominion and just want to see some interesting games, like you guys. :>

I am not a superb hyper top-tier Dominion player, but I am decent I guess. At the moment I am somewhere at 6100 points and around place 30 on the pro leaderboard. So most likely many viewers can learn from my video (but I can also learn from you comments of course. :)).
Besides that I am not a terribly good caster, but the best way to improve is to keep doing it.
Hopefully it will be at around one Dominion video per day in the end, but I can not promise that. While the cutting, rendering and uploading of these is very fast (compared to other games), I can only upload and record during the weekends at the moment.

So here are the two playlists:

Just games:
(only pro mode, 5k+)

Games with tutorials:
(mainly casual mode in the beginning for convenience reasons)

Anyways, thanks for watching and have fun doing so. :)

Goko Dominion Online / Re: Why do people demand 4000+/5000+?

Putting my differences with the system in place aside, I have to admit I think it's pretty accurate just by looking at the top 25 or so players.

I see a lot of names that were also on top on the Iso leaderboard, so if you're a good player, you'll get an appropriate high rating in the end.

I'm even proud that I'm in the top 25 (~6200) given how little games I play, maybe 5 per day maximum, so it seems with this rating system there is less focus on uncertainty. And I don't even have any cards, full-leech-mode! :D

What I take away from it is this: I think I can hold my own and play competitively against anyone on the list and that's all that matters for me. I don't need to be on top, but I like to be good enough that I don't feel overwhelmed by anybody up there. It's a bit sad though that there are many kingdoms with blatant dominant strategies or, more likely, sub-strategies like: be the first to get or do X, making shuffle luck a big factor in those games. However, the randomness is also a feature, making it able to pull of some crazy comebacks. :)

I don't know how 4ks and 5ks feel about the system though.
I am 32 in the pro leaderboard and I am pretty sure I do not deserve it.

55
Procession, Throne, King's court, Golem, Scheme, and Graverobber can fail in kingdoms with only treasures and victory cards.
Village, Fortress, Walled Village and Quarry too.
But except Quarry all of them are useful in a game with Vineyards. :p
Graverobber can do something when Farmland is in the Kingdom.

56
Scout is pretty terrible except in very rare edge case games. Procession can only shine with specific cards at specific costs, and to an extent the same is true for develop. Cache is often relatively useless unless there are cards in the Kingdom that want extra cards in your deck or reactions like Trader or Watchtower. Saboteur actually does exceptionally well in some DA kingdoms (especially with Knights and/or Rebuild) but is a terrible card in most other kingdoms. Counting House, Stash, Treasure Map, Philosophers Stone and Peddler are relatively bad without certain other cards as enablers. Adventurer is usually bad without trashing. Curse is in every kingdom but is (usually) a pretty bad card without Curses or an Engine with Masquerade or Ambassador.

57
Yes, but only when I feel like I care. More often than not I name it "all cards" and start the game without looking at the other players stats because I just wanna play instead of waiting and kicking people. And it is not like I could grab a coffee or something while waiting, because then you come back and some 3000pts guy has been blocking the slot for two minutes. :>

58
No, but I sure have better things to do with my free time than sitting ten minutes in my hosted game and kicking person after person until someone around 6k points shows up, all while those guys yell at me "hurr durr, why kick, he?", "hurr durr, no kick please", "hurr durr, gogo, kekekeke no kick, hurr durr" and "****ing stop kicking me ****ing pi**face and start the stupid game, you retarded retard *ucktard." Sure, not everyone acts that way, but in those ten minutes usually at least one of these guys shows up, and usually I have to kick him 10-40 times until he gives up.

Experience might differ in your timezone.

Variants and Fan Cards / Re: "Fixing" cards that you don't like
« on: May 18, 2013, 11:36:21 am »
I think Transmute for $4 would be an awesome card.
How about leaving it at the $0/P cost and adding the line "In games using this, when you gain a Potion, you may gain a Transmute."?

60
Scout Troop - $5
Type = combined Victory/Action/Treasure, worth 0 VP and $0.
+ $2
Look through your deck and reveal any number of Victory cards from it. All cards cost $2 more this turn for every 4 Victory cards revealed (rounded down). Discard all of the revealed Victory cards and shuffle your deck. +1 Action for every Action card and +$2 for every Treasure card discarded this way.

The main problem with the fact that you lose points for a tie is that a non-existing matchmaking system makes you play against players with whom you possibly lose a few hundred points in a tie.

I'd rather have ties not count for anyone until that changed, because it feels weird. :>

Semi-edge case Lighthouse. ;)

If Goko wants to encourage more people to buy the cards, they should make it a top priority to change the lobby / matchmaking system to add more incentive to buy them.
I am sure they are well aware that they need a matchmaking system.
If I had to make the choice (of buying the cards) again I simply wouldn't buy them because I don't like to pay for a promised but not-implemented matchmaking system. When I bought them it certainly looked like 'matchmaking coming soon' tough.
I guess most of the non-buying 'old-time-players' are not buying the cards because they do not want to pay for an inferior product that even misses the basic functionality of a matchmaking system.
Finding players who are roughly at your point level is a joke, even when you host "all cards" games, because most of the time it involves 10 minutes of kicking people who are a few thousand points below you. They could at least throw people into different lobbies, like 2000-2500 points go into Gardens, 2500-3000 go into Great Hall etc. until they implemented the matchmaking system.

Oh, and I am completely against a matchmaking system that allows you to softban certain cards or avoid certain players. Both will lead to certain ways to abuse the system. If someone does not like how someone else talks he should just be able to ignore him or hide the chat. If someone does not like certain cards he should just play casual mode.
Actually those two things would be very good reasons for me not to pay any money. (Yeah, it is too late for that, but I am quite sure that applies for other potential customers too.)

Why no Contraband?

It's a gold with a +buy on a board with options like this. Block gold and I could still buy Platinum, Venture, Bank, Province, Colony, etc.

I think I would do:
Loan/Loan
If I get lucky and hit $5 grab a Contraband. Otherwise a Silver to get to Contraband fast.
Then a Counterfit. (Which you eventually use to kill you Contraband)
Then Venture/Bank/Plat in a super thin deck. (The cycling from the loans get you there quick)

You should be able to double Colony at least once. Single Colony a bunch. Double Province by the end.
Venture will put Contraband into autoplay, which is kind of bad. Especially because the probability increases with more Ventures. This leads to the situation where the chance of being able to double Colony (and even single Colony) decreases when the amount of treasures in your hand and in play increases, which is kind of terrible on a board with only treasures. :-Þ

The german rulebook also tells you to put one of the Silvers you gain with Beggars reaction into your hand.

Pretty sure Venture+Bank will dominate it. Talisman+Philosophers Stone does not work btw.

Also Contraband is pretty useless on that board I guess.

Or what about:
+1 Action
Look at the top 4 cards of your deck.  Put them back in any order.
+1 Card

That actually fits with the name a little better, and I think might be an okay card, even at $4.  But maybe too similar to Cartographer?
What about a reverse Warehouse or Courtyard-like seeder card? :>
+1 Action
+4 cards
Put 2 cards from your hand on top of your deck.

edit: 3 cards, not 2. I suck at typing numbers. :-þ

Unfortunately, this kind of non-terminal Courtyard isn't a good idea in practice. Often you'd be chaining them, and it gets really tiresome repeatedly putting back cards that you immediately draw with your next copy. I know this from experience.
Well, it might still be better than scout and in the worst case it is 'draw the best card of your next four' and in the best case it is 'seed yourself with three cards you want next turn or do not need this turn (like that scout you want to chain :p) and follow up with a terminal'.

That would be pretty amazing - that's a lab with a bonus.
That was a typo. It should be 'put 3 from your hand on top of your deck'. As I said, sort of like some reverse Warehouse.

Black Market, although it could have slightly less swingy implementation, like a seperate BM-deck for every player or something.

71
Governor by far. I totally like the concept of it, but I do not like the execution at all. I'd probably love it if either silver or duchies had a cost of 4.

72
I voted for 10-15% but the more I think about it the more I am sure the number is actually quite a bit lower. Sure, there are Witches and some Dames, but besides them there's not a lot of cards, and a bunch of them don't even count because there is more than 1 character on it.

Problem is, it's fine to say make the icons smaller when you are playing on a 22" widescreen monitor (like I do at home) but maybe not so fine when you are playing on an iPhone.  I can see where making the icons smaller to fit more on could make the iPhone version unplayable.

Use pages where necessary.  Use pages on the iPhone.  But it's kind of ridiculous to force the same layout on every machine.  When you have a larger screen, why not make use of the extra real estate?

For mobile devices, they could save room by offering a no-images option.  Androminion got by just fine with a single screen, AND it includes a log.
I'd like to second that. It is kind of annoying that goko only uses about a third of the available space on a 1080p display.

Rules Questions / Re: Double Throne Room
« on: April 06, 2013, 06:04:47 pm »
And for a quick example:

Your hand is Throne Room, Throne Room, Smithy, Copper, Copper. You play Throne Room 1, selecting Throne Room 2. The first time you play Throne Room 2 you select Smithy, drawing 6 cards. Lets say one of these cards is Market. You may now select the Market for the second play of Throne Room 2.
As a matter of fact, you actually must select the Market for the second play of Throne Room 2 if you did not drew any other actions, even if you don't want to because it might trigger a reshuffle or whatever, as there is no may-clause on Throne Room.
