i like the "when you gain a card" thing, there seem to be possibilities there.  A card where you drew a card on a gain might have potential.

Wait, transmute turns your estates into gold!  That gives you money!

Goko Dominion Online / Re: Why aren't *you* playing on Goko?
« on: February 13, 2013, 10:53:42 am »
It's not merely that Goko costs money.  It's that it costs money to buy something worse than what I already get for free at iso.  Lack of automatch is the main problem; the amount of time it takes to get a game is another big factor.  (I like the interface, except sometimes it's hard to figure out what my opponents did.)  I am a grad student and I don't have much cash laying around to spend on games.

I don't know how much it's just a question of being used to iso and disliking goko merely for being different, but the textyness of iso makes it easier to follow the game.

Meanwhile, English is the odd one out for the rook, which almost every other language calls tower or castle.

srsly.  it ain't no crow.  It's never a crow.  It's a tower or castle.  (merriam webster suggests it's derived from the Persion "rukh", which seems to be the fabled giant bird aka "roc", but that still makes no sense.)

557
One of the most swingy things that happens is when one person gets a curser from the BM and there's no other cursing on the board.  A solution to this problem would be to forbid cursers from the BM deck unless there's cursing on the board.  I wouldn't prefer this, and I expect most fans of the card wouldn't, and so in principle it makes sense to want to give the users 'preferences' on how they want to construct the deck (e.g. the "random", players choose the cards, variance blocking), but it strikes me that options like that are cumbersome from a UI/user experience perspective.

I used to veto BM routinely, but now I like it, not least b/c of the tactician (and minion) interactions. There's a lot of luck in Dominion.  All your terminals might collide on the reshuffle.  I enjoy the game even when I get bad luck.

The engine can just get more points in less time.  Piling out is going to be a danger, so the engine builder may have to get some buffer points at some point, but it's just so fast.

my best BM/wharf run to 8 prov was 15 turns (with no duchies) http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201302/01/game-20130201-141945-80fad65a.html , more typically 17 turns with some duchies (scores in the high 50s).

Clearly, dondon's engine can beat that.  I am clearly no engineer!

I think it's pretty hard to make an engine in the 8 card kingdom - wharf+bank BM is very strong, and that combo allows you to safely wait to green if you see your opponent isn't going to contest provinces.  In that case, the BM player can expect to double province at least once.

Engine problems: the only source of +action is nobles, which is terrible for that (necropolis for $6), and Golem (which might hit a lab if you're lucky or spend a long time getting a high lab density).  With Fairgrounds at 6, it's possible, but that means you need a lot of terminal actions (with poor +action) among which Graverobber is a mostly dead $5 (note that you don't need a curse if you've got a potion).  If you'd go for an engine in the 8 card kingdom, i'd like to hear how you think you can make it work.  It may be that if you can hit 6 reliably and pick up a Nobles and a lab your golems would actually work.

On the other hand, if you through a cheap non-terminal or two in there, then the Golem can actually work for +action, the Haggler gets way better (now useful for more than silver when you don't hit 6), and the Graverobber can trash those for Fairgrounds later on (not terribly useful, but at least it's no longer dead).

Game Reports / Re: Lose curses 9-1, lose Cities 2-8, win the game.
« on: January 30, 2013, 11:36:34 am »
just goes to show that if you're not paying attention you can utterly squander your lead.  Your opponent screwed up majorly.  TimeFlies should never have gotten a bishop once he got a lead on the curse race (having gotten the Familiar in the first reshuffle).  Salvager is the only source of +buy, so he needed one of those.  KC would have helped him as much as you.  Buying the last city enabled you to pile out.  I think if you hadn't had a KC/city on your last turn he still might have won, but your opponent helped you every step of the way.

Game Reports / Re: Nice Menagerie/HoP board
« on: January 30, 2013, 11:27:23 am »
Nothing earth shattering to add, but Woodcutter is rarely worthwhile, and while it's not total crap here, I still don't like it.  If there were some source of +action, then maybe, but I think the single Militia is all the terminals you need (with menagerie on the board you will often be helping your opponent with a militia so while I am normally inclined to get two terminal attacks in a non-terminal draw engine, I'm not sure that it's worth it here). HoP serves your +buy needs early and Grand Markets later on do whatever the HoP can't.  I observe that the +buy from the woodcutter was not used once.

trying this out some more, it's only something you'd want to try on a fairly weak board.  Without some reliable way of gaining silver, the feoda aren't very powerful, so a decent province engine should be able to beat it handily.  I'll do a little more testing to see how it compares with BM.

And, I've discovered that playing this isn't as straight-forward as I'd thought.  you want to buy feoda fairly early so you can trash them with time to spare.  Also, picking up an oppponent's engine pieces can be a nuisance in some cases, especially, e.g. tournament.

the previous post in this forum deals with it.  i'm having the same problem - the money/points graphs in game logs just reappeared, and as of today I can see the kingdom tracker doodad again, so I'd suppose progress is under way.

Settlers of Catan

My favorite RPG is Fiasco, but the idea of a Fiasco tournament is absurd.  Most RPGs don't have winners, though some do ( http://www.agon-rpg.com/ http://www.bullypulpitgames.com/games/roach/ ).

I think a sentence explaining the difference between a combo deck and an engine would be good.  I take it that a combo deck would be, e.g., the goons/masque pin or bishop/fortress.

You are quite wrong about Rebuild/Oge in my experience. When you hit Rebuild, you are already getting to 5 coin hands and the game is about buying/gaining duchies to Rebuild into Provinces. It takes two plays of Rebuild to bump Oge up to duchy, which is a bit faster than than the three required to turn the Estates into Duchies, better the +1 card off the first hit make it easier to buy something useful (like a duchy).

At first I misunderstood you.  If your goal is to rebuild duchies into provinces, then 3 starting estates will slow you down more than one OGE.  OTOH, in the case of estates, at the end of your 3 rebuild plays, you've got 3 duchies (or, more likely, E/D/P) instead of one province.  This means you have more opportunities to buy rebuilds instead of duchies, so it seems to me that shelters hurt Rebuild more than they help.

I can't see most of the graphs (# buys, turn #, game log, missing, but I can see my level and games/date graphs on my user page).  I am running Fedora 14, using Chrome 23.0.1271.97 and I've also tried Firefox 3.6.24 with the same results.

I just wanted to add that I'm delighted to have CR back, and that it seems much faster than it used to be.

You went first, opened Silver/Courtyard planning to go BigMoney, and get the perfect draw: $6 on turn 3 without even using the Courtyard. That's a gold for sure. On turn 4 you play the Courtyard and draw all 3 Estates, 3 Coppers and your Silver. What do you put back? What do you buy?
your deck is: 7C, 3E, silver, CY, gold.  In hand/play are 3E, 3C, CY, Silver, and you just reshuffled.  That means your deck is 4C and Gold.  Whatever card X you put back, your next turn will either be G+3C+X (80%) or 4C+X (20%).  4C+anything but silver is comparitively awful and you don't get much by holding on to the silver, so don't do it.  Put the Silver back and buy a gold whether you get $8 or $6.

Dominion Articles / Feodum/Rogue/trasher
« on: January 07, 2013, 12:33:47 pm »
Playing this strategy isn't very tricky.  Start by thinning your deck so that you can play as many Rogues as possible (deck destruction works best when you can lay it on thick).  Buy Feodums, trash them for silver, then Rogue them back.  Rogue slows down your opponent down some, and a long game helps your Feoda acquire more value.

However, Rogue works much better with Feodum than it usually does - both its attack and its dumpster diving.  Rogue's attack isn't that powerful, and there's often stuff in the trash you don't want.  For most decks, having a Rogue hit your opponent's Silver is especially annoying.  In this case, Rogue resembles a Thief/Saboteur you have to play twice, and you'd likely rather not have more Silver anyway, but when you're going for Feodum, that Silver is a juicy treat.  Meanwhile, getting hit with an opponent's Rogue doesn't really hurt you that much nor will it help them a good deal (outside a mirror match).

Any trasher will do here.  Remake is perhaps the best because it turns estate into silver, silver into Feodum/Remake, and Feodum into Rogue. Trashing your copper is better here than for other alternate VP strategies because it helps you play your Rogues more and you don't need copper for buying power when you've got so much silver.

Things like steward and chapel probably help the engine builder more than you (steward especially), but if you can hit them with enough rogues (which an initially thin deck helps with), then you have a good chance to slow them down enough to get the win you want.  Rogueing away your oppoent's villages can help this strategy play Rogue more and allow you to trash a Feodum and get it back in one turn.  (I found this strategy in a game with Scheme, KC, Chapel, Rogue, Feodum, and Chapel - I played it a few times and found that Feodum was practically unbeatable even in the presence of other strong engine parts.  KC-Rogue is not KC-Sab, but played every turn it's still brutal.  Meanwhile, Rogue is much worse for the Province player for the reasons discussed above.)

I haven't tried out all the TfB options, but it seems like Salvager would be the next best after Remake.  Trade route would probably work quite nicely too.  I'd guess bishop would be good too - the danger is, as always, the free trashing for your opponent; on the other hand, the extra VP will add up in the long game that can be expected.  Upgrade would work like Remake, and Apprentice would you help you spam your Rogues (though Apprenticing a Silver away is pointless unless you can play multiple rogues in a turn), while Junk Trader isn't going to be that useful to you after the early game since it's really easy to hit $3 or $4.  At a cost of $5, these options conflict with Rogue, and you want as many Rogues as you can get.

I would guess that this beats BM handily - it shouldn't be hard to simulate, but I've never used the sims so I can't tell.  Stealing treasure, duchies and those few actions from the BM player will hurt her some, but I think that most BM strategies would just choke.  It's not hard at all to get 18 silver if you can freely trash the feodum, and that's all you need for Feodum to match province at a mere cost of $4.  You need more than 18 silver to beat your opponents' duchies and estates, but I don't think it's that hard, especially since you'll knock a few of their duchies down.

One nice thing that separates Feodum from Duke is the non-Duke players can contest for Duchies, but (a) Feodum isn't going to be worth much to a non-Feodum centric deck, and (b) you might possibly steal them back.

As to vulnerabilities, I'm not so sure.  Your thoughts?

What do you all think of my commentary so far?  Anything I could be doing better?  With regards to the handling of the video, not my actual playing, that is.
I'd begin the commentary when the game starts rather than while waiting for ppl to join your game.  other than that i think you've got the program down.

So FT can be used strategically to plow through the opponents deck in the case that he hasn't seen his X card yet this shuffle.   Seems like I'd rather have X in most cases, but if I can somehow get both, great.
