How to you refer to Cities when no piles are empty, when 1 pile is empty, and when 2 piles are empty?

Lost the game because of it.

:o I just lost the game. >:(

It looks like we need a standard notation... how will we arrive at a consensus?

I know there are at least hints of this in the secret histories ("this card never changed" and "this took a long time to playtest and changed a lot"), but what cards were among the easiest/quickest to both come up with and playtest, and which ones were among the hardest/longest to both come up with and playtest? Are there whole expansions that were generally easier or harder to finish (expansion size notwithstanding)? I realize this question may not be answerable, but just in case. Thank you.

Level 1 is when no supply piles are empty.
Level 2 is when 1 is.
Level 3 is when 2 are.
Are you familiar with the bonuses you get with Cities when 1 or 2 piles are empty?
See http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/index.php/City for more information about this card.

http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201301/28/game-20130128-160945-463272b9.html

On turn 19 I draw: a Copper, 2 Wishing Wells, an Estate, and a Bridge. I had just reshuffled and I have 3 King's Courts in my deck.

thirtyseven plays a Wishing Well.
... drawing 1 card and getting +1 action.
... wishing for a King's Court and finding one.

Then I have just enough buys after KC-KC-BR-BR to close it out. 8)

Game Reports / Nice Menagerie/HoP board
« on: January 28, 2013, 05:42:37 pm »
http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201301/28/game-20130128-143259-5b799ed6.html

cards in supply: Bank, Contraband, Familiar, Grand Market, Horn of Plenty, Menagerie, Militia, Philosopher's Stone, Potion, Stables, and Woodcutter

So many cards here I wanna get... and I tend to get overwhelmed by boards like this because there's so much going on strategically and tactically. I'd appreciate your input. Anyway I open Potion/Woodcutter aiming for early Familiars... and I wanted a Militia ASAP to slow down my opponent. (Potion before Militia here, right?) Woodcutter over Silver here because I'll need the +buy and it's the only terminal besides Militia. For the deck variety, HoP is good as well as Menagerie (discard attack an added bonus to Menag). P-stones get really good, and are useful (along with HoP) to pick up GMs and other goodies. Fun game.

What do people call you IRL? Do you have a preference what we call you online? (e.g., you might hate being called DXV for whatever reason)

You don't have an avatar on here... so if you did, what Dominion card would you choose? Would you choose the Isotropic or Official artwork?

Mic Qsenoch is obviously Darth Vader.

I picture him HiveMindEmulator as looking like his avatar, the Jack of Hearts. :P

Generally, boards with weak or no $5+ (kingdom) cards are weak boards... not always true, but the simplest metric. Throw in a curser or any power card and it can be considered a strong, or at least not weak, board. Strong boards are harder to define, unless you just mean "non-weak" boards.

Edit: And as far as percentages, very few boards I've come across I'd consider weak... 10% maybe.

I simply think Upgrade + minion is the best thing to do. Minion by itself is already a strong counter to FG.

You'll need to be more elaborate with your strategy, since Upgrade and Minion are at the same price point. ;)

I don't think any decent player would try alchemist with that first board. HT + IGG into duchies is unbeatable.  I'd got HT silver, and then HT on any 4s, silver on any 3s, and IGG to duchies on any 5+.  Develop is a possibility, but I'd probably skip it.

Your worst board is a boring game. silver/silver 1 gold, 3 hunting parties, then province > 1 mine> hunting party> great hall to finish.  It's usually a mistake going "BM" (buying gold instead of another hunting party) in hunting party games. 1 gold is almost always enough. In this game you could even skip mine and get a cartog instead. for guaranteeing your first draw with HP is a treasure.

I was completely joking about the alchemist play. The point I was trying to make is that opponents buy Alchemists far more often than I do. For the other game, I like the Cartographer idea; I usually overlook that card which may be why it's one of my worst cards.

Most of my Best cards are ones I don't buy nearly as often as others, especially Alchemist. The notable exception is IGG, which I love buying almost all the time and do win a lot with them. Of my worst cards, lots of villages and cantrips! The only one I can really say I'm poor at playing is Peddler, and possibly Hunting Party. Especially when I was a newbie I had no idea how to play them.

Best cards (in order, best one first):

Loan
Horse Traders
Horn of Plenty
Witch
Herbalist
Ill-Gotten Gains
Black Market
Alchemist
Develop
Nomad Camp

Strategy: IGG rush. Unlike some great players, I don't like the idea of getting a Witch as well. I would open IGG/Herbalist on 5/2, but 4/3 is interesting. I want a Silver, but would my other buy be HT, Develop, or NC? I'd open Develop, so I can Develop IGG into Gold and Horse Traders. My opponent would try an Alchemist stack and lose. :P

Worst cards (in order, worst one first):

Great Hall
Shanty Town
Village
Philosopher's Stone
Fishing Village
Mine
Cartographer
Inn
Hunting Party
Peddler

Strategy: This feels like a very weak board to me, and I can't see any good strategy here. Maybe that's why they're my worst cards haha. I think I'd try BM-Mine with HP support... getting one early Mine and Gold>HP>Silver from there. My opponent would somehow find a way to gain Peddlers effectively without +buy and destroy me. :P

Yeah you need a lot more than 6 Provinces to seal the deal here... perhaps get the remaining 7 Nobles that turn? That way you're a) up on points, b) closer to 3-piling, and c) can use the +3 Cards to draw your NVs and Bridges back into your hand next turn. :)

Game Reports / Re: Great Comeback
« on: December 19, 2012, 01:25:08 am »
Why does your opponent want all those prizes, I wonder? None are doing much for his deck... BoG might help him piledrive Provinces more easily, maybe? He hinders this by getting Followers, which chokes him with Estates (not to mention there's Masquerade on the board and he ends up with more curses than you!). Also, Princess when he has a Bridge seems like a waste. He might as well get Duchies with his Tournaments, which would've stopped your comeback. Which leads me to...

Question for high-level players (including yourself, Powerman): would going for Tournaments and Provinces (and improving buying power along the way), then choosing to gain a Duchy with every Tournament win and switching to Duchy/Duke later on be a viable strategy in general?

3.5 weeks after WanderingWinder comes off hiatus by posting more videos, CouncilRoom is back online!!! See the forum post about its return.

As far as I'm concerned, this is the only other thing left on my original poll that I wanted to make sure actually happened (Goko? bleh... Guilds? certain. Respect? already more than I deserve...), which means not to worry, I won't bump my own thread anymore.

But let us rejoice that CR is back!!!
