The whole idea of shutting down isotropic (a single one of likely several alternative implementations) to help a commercial game seems flawed -- from the view of the supplying party. This is not obvious.

RGG implementation is good (main case to consider) -> keep isotropic as free advertizing, people will use both or migrate.
RGG implementation sucks for some reason -> keep isotropic or annoy/destroy/fracture a serious portion of the current community, for little financial gain in return.

Yes, using the images from the physical game will entice the masses. Even sleek graphics in general would already do, and trying to beat all the gratis alternatives in sheer usability will, too. As will marketing the product as the original thing or something alike.

All of this is another example of how the argument "there's a gratis alternative, so a commercial product will not pull in revenue" is moot. If it were sound, nearly any piece of proprietary software would be obsolete and pointless to make. Yet the software forges thrive and people still pay. Especially for casual games, and polished appearance is a major reason.

The whole game is copyrighted.  Card text, images, rules are all copyrighted.

The images aren't used at all, no infringement here. Only the actual expression of the rules can be copyrighted, and isotropic doesn't have a copy of the rulebook, so there is no problem in this regard either. It's not possible to copyright an idea.

Also, one can't copyright individual words, thus the card titles are out of question, and it's highly unlikely that trademarks for these words would ever be granted.

Quote
especially since its obvious that the intent would be to infringe on the copyright.

If there's nothing infringing, then there's no problem with intentions in the first place. Having certain intentions is usually only important if one wants to duck away with Fair Use.

The most probable hindrance could be the card texts. This is more than just a few words. (And could get replaced easily. If necessary, by getting ideas on wording from someone who han't played the game.)

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Game Selection

There are negative levels, but anything lower than 1 won't be displayed to other players.

Don't know whether negative levels are displayed to the user himself. To find out for sure, check the leaderboard (through the isotropic FAQ), the level is obtained by subtracting the standard deviation (plus-minus) from the expected value (first figure).

Levels also change just once per day.

In case RGG publishes an online Dominion: There shouldn't be any legal grounds to force isotropic down legally, are there? No copyright or patents are infringed, and a simple name change should protect against any trademarks.

[sea hag discard] I know the purpose of the effect, and that purpose remains intact if you further nerf the effect by making it optional.

Ah, if the victim may choose whether to discard instead of the attacker, then it's a sensible idea.

Hmm, same would then apply to the minion attack. With the proposed change, people are guaranteed the opportunity to use their strongest card throughout each shuffle.

The main purpose of the Duke is to have an excellent Swindler replacement at $5.

The second purpose of the Duke is that it faciliates an okay comeback route in Province games.

The Sea Hag discard effect is actually a nerf. It prevents multiple stacked curses on the deck. In the endgame, it's a mill, it cycles the opponent's deck when he doesn't want that anymore during VP purchases. Thus, the card has a nonzero use after curses are gone. :-)

Minion in the current form is excellent against people who return N alchemists back to the deck, no other card can do this.

Other ideas --
  • Throne Room: change to "may play".
  • Masquerade: passing only happens between players with cards.
  • Goons: maybe add Outpost-like clause against too many VP from copies of itself?
  • Pawn's choices may be done in either order, Trusty Steed's ones must be done in order: Pick one method and do it throughout.
  • Black Market: ban altogether :> Or change to "+$2, +Buy. Turn up top 3 cards of BM deck, select one. Add additional kingdom pile with regular initial amount of that card. Remove from supply any other pile set up by this before."

Dominion Articles / Re: Request: Avoiding end-game deck stalls

The main decision is whether to go for a rather self-working grinding endgame (buy top VP card as early as possible) or to make an elaborate engine. Your problem should mainly occur during engine endgames. The solution here is mainly finding the correct time for the switch to VP buys. The following cute moves may help, but they probably can't salvage wrong decisions made earlier.

Apprentice top victory card = draw most of the deck for a game-ending move. Know what you have in your draw pile, and know the score before doing this. Apprentice is a nice trasher in general, so this doesn't need much planning.

Salvage top victory card = deplete its pile faster. Only useful if leading.

Bishop a Province = -1 VP for $1, slight acceleration, opponent might trash Curse. Fine in very small decks, or when the rest of the hand totals exactly $7, or when the bishop was KCed anyway. Bishoping a Colony should be false most of the time.

Early Hoard purchases = see today's featured article about Hoard in Colony games. Otherwise this is extremely useful. (And fun with Gardens.)

Early Vault = mainly useful throughout Province games, it's less useful in Colony endgames.

Late Cellar = only good if one doesn't buy too many of them. Useless against handsize attacks.

This is just some ideas. If someone considers writing a proper article, go ahead.

Feedback / Re: Isotropic feedback?

Doug/theory: Yes, an Isotropic forum here seems immensely useful, even if not for upstream feedback.

The General board has a much larger post count than anything else, and several recent threads there are purely isotropic related. They could be moved neatly to their own board.

Game Reports / Re: Game Altering Hands

Hah, that fairgrounds game from yesterday.

We both thought the isotropic point counter had glitched. I typed GG to acknowlegde the beating the exact moment I saw the Gold trash, knowing I was just 1 point ahead and the province would have me lose by 5.

IIRC, we stalled the penultimate Colony and then later the penultimate Province.

Just played the first game with it on isotropic. Rabble rabble rabble. It's great in a terminal-only deck. :D

Couldn't resist a village idiot opening >_>;

Dominion Isotropic / Re: Decline of civility on isotropic?

my personal opinion is that the only time it's really appropriate to resign is when you have absolutely no chance [...] It just seems spiteful not to let the other person take the "real" win, if it's only going to take 2 min.

Opinion is fine, but I'm interested about why does it seem spiteful to you? There is just winning and losing in a 2-player game, nothing else. Resigning is actually a courtesy of the losing player to save both players from the likely boring last 2 minutes.

Quote from: Death to Sea Hags
But part of that community norm is an expectation that the losing player's willingness to stay put and lose graciously is not going to be abused by the winner.

I don't believe that such a norm can be established in sufficiently high-level play. There is no benefit to playing out decided games, but resigning them has an advantage. It's also is a well-established custom in most other game communities.
