I’m 99% sure I read Donald described it as an “oops” moment from his perspective at some point.

Regardless of whether it was a mistake or a deliberate anachronism for the sake of promotion, it’s an exception that shouldn’t be taken as “Dominion’s time period extends to 1893.”
But it is fun to be mildly inciteful by using it as an example  ;D

2
Card name predictions: Ninja (as above), Monk, Shrine, Samurai

I don't know how accurate these would be in medieval times.

Oh, and a Prophecy: Scout Is Great Again
Samurai are late 1100s-1800s, and Renaissance is ~14-1500s.
Ninjas enter the historical records in 1400s.
Dominion straddles a very wide range of dates. Empires themed to the Roman Empire is nearer to the birth of Christ, but, again, Renaissance is 15/16th century.
Ninjas and Samurai fit alright.

Heck, the Piratey cards of Plunder and Seaside point to the golden age of piracy, circa 1700, and Schwerin Cathedral, featured on Church, was finished in 1893.

Rules Questions / Re: Simple Rules Questions

Regarding Footpad global effect:
It is clear to me that Actions played during the Buy Phase (such as with Coronet) do not trigger the draw, and likewise, that Treasures (like Hammer) played during the Action Phase (say, also via Coronet) do.
But what about "At the start of your turn" actions before your Action phase proper? I'm referring to gainers played by Farmhands or Prince, or Duration start-of-turn gain effects like Quartermaster or Enlarge (Thus effectively making Quartermaster also a Hireling?)

4
New events and the return of any one-off mechanic other than Potions is always welcome to me.
I'm hoping for more $+debt cards like Fortune, it could be fun to Remodel Engineer into a 4 debt+$2 value card.
"Shadow" though? Is full deck searching to grab cards now a thing? Different backs like Stash to make finding them easier?
25 kingdom piles is already 275 cards minimum. Previous Event sets have had 13-20. I expect there's one 1-count Victory card, so lets say 277 Kingdom cards. If Prophecies are Environment-style cards, I'd guess that 10-13 are those, with the Events rounding out the stack with 10-13 of them. If Prophecies are mini-game-like action/treasure cards (akin to Magic Lamp, Haunted Mirror, or Leprechaun) then they would already be accounted fors. They might be mini-game events (or Event-likes) akin to Windfall. I look forward to previews, and hope for a hype trickle, unlike everything dropping at once in the Cornucopia/Guilds rulebook.

I find it amusing that Footpad is roughly the replacement attack for Taxman, but in a game with Footpad, Taxman actually becomes usable as a full mine+attack, since you get to immediately draw the treasure you just topdecked.

Just use AI art. I wouldn't mind  :P
While Dominion's art style could get away with it very easily by using only public domain art, the legal risks of putting out AI-generated art trained on living artists' work would be a potential legal nightmare. And good luck guaranteeing that your AI model only used art from the public domain.

I'll break up Gendo's monologuing with some of my own.

I played through TotK almost as much as possible without acquiring the Paraglider. I was motivated to do this by how I originally played BotW: You're directed toward Impa in Kakariko by Rhoam at the start of the game, and I wanted to find out if her dialogue was different if you completed all of the Divine Beasts before speaking with her. (Spoiler: It is).
Thus, in TotK, where Purah takes the place of the 'main quest-giver', I decided I would complete as much of the main quest as possible without speaking with her to see unique dialogue at the end. This has the unfortunate side-effect of locking me out of the Paraglider, but I found this made the game an absolute joy to play.

All 152 shrines can be completed without making use of glitches (some require bombs or rockets brought in fused to a shield, but at no point are glitches required).
Fall damage becomes a real and persistent threat (until you get the Glide armor and upgrade it to negate fall damage), and navigating sky islands, especially the lead-ups to the Water and Wind temples, requires more use of Zonai devices. I did the Water Temple first, prior to knowing about the elegant simplicity of the game-breaking hoverbike, and climbing up the low-gravity section was quite challenging. Also, the game puts Link into the glider automatically when reaching the top of a waterfall. Without the glider, Link instead goes into a fall state. Then, annoyingly, the 'R' button is mapped to both 'throw weapon' and 'enter skydiving mode', meaning that I ended up throwing a number of weapons while just trying to land on the platform Link swam up to.

But in spite of that, the lack of paraglider means you approach everything differently. The Fire Temple is still cheese-able, but requires more effort than just ascending to a high point and gliding into your room of choice, thus making it easier to actually just do the minecart puzzles.
Navigating the Wind Temple at times is also a suitable challenge, and the Colgera fight without a glider (and especially without rockets in your inventory) makes for a distinct challenge.

The sheer amount of separate progression tracks in this game is insane:
Shrines unlock stamina and hearts.
Koroks unlock inventory space
Finding a withered weapon aboveground unlocks the pristine version in the depths
Doing things in the depths unlock battery charges
The depths also house autobuild plans
Caves unlock bubblefrog gems, which unlock prizes
There are an absurd amount of quests around the map, many of which unlock amiibo costumes (which don’t do much, but are still kind of fun)
There are quests to unlock the great fairies now in order to upgrade equipment
Lightroots to find and fill out the depths map
And Sage’s Vows to upgrade your sage abilities.
I suppose there are also the new towers for unlocking map points, but I didn’t interact with those.

Now, my real issues with this game begin with the seemingly arbitrary list of things you cannot access without talking to Purah:
All of the runes that Robbie can unlock (Camera, Hero’s Path, Sensor, Travel Medallion).
As such, all quests that require the camera (these especially annoy me)
The ‘Crisis at Hyrule Castle’ event vs. phantom Ganons
The Ring Ruins leadup to the Dragonhead islands, (and also the lighting armor from the Zonai ruins, but I did glitch through those, and was able to clear out the thundercloud from the archipelago, this does NOT allow you to take Mineru’s mask, I had hoped it would set the quest flag to that point).
Unlocking any part of the map on the surface, any part of the sky map except the Great Sky Island.
Launching yourself out of any tower for faster transportation, or using them as teleport points.

I say this list seems arbitrary because of the sheer amount of things you CAN do without the glider (and without glitches)
All four main dungeons
Buy and build a House
Most sidequests
The entire Lucky Clover Gazette quest with Penn
Unlock all lightroots and fully map the depths
Collect all the equipment in Hyrule Castle (a few people guard several entrances, but you can still make it inside via alternate routes)
Acquire a bunch of Paraglider fabrics
Clear the first difficulty at the flight training grounds (second difficultly seems impossible lol)
Complete the diving challenges for the Glide Suit
Complete ALL shrines (and it is an absolute joy to puzzle through a few of them).
Collect all Sage’s Vows (but four remain in your inventory without Mineru)
Complete the Great Sky Island Temple of Time fire lighting ceremony
Get Autobuild and all except one schematic
Save the Korok Forest/do all quests there.
Complete the Typhlo Ruins quest (for clearing all four Regional Phenomena) to get the Dusk Claymore.
Get the Master Sword
Crawl through the Hyrule Castle tunnel to make it all the way to the bunker under Lookout Landing (which itself stays closed lol).
Complete all of the Yiga-related quests (fighting Kohga multiple times, completing the Yiga outfit, and doing the blademaster quest)
Beat Ganon

The biggest offender is, of course, the Spirit Temple. It is accessible the moment you launch yourself out of any one Sheikah tower, then follow-up by talking to Purah. (Well, technically accessible, most players will also need 10 hearts, you can ascend into the room to bypass the door, but very few would try this on their own). Otherwise, you're told to come back later. I would think that just opening the 10-heart door, demonstrating that you've earned at least 6 heart containers since leaving the Great Sky Island, would be sufficient, but no. It is arbitrarily locked behind having the glider and doing one tower launch. I would even forgive this if it required the player to fight the phantom Ganons at Hyrule Castle and do the full Ring Ruins quest, but no, you can do the Spirit Temple first if you are motivated to do so.

The game is about 90% perfect on every front, but also on every front has something lacking, even merely compared with Breath of the Wild.
Why must Link's house be green?
Why are there Hudson house modules used to build homes in Tarry and Hateno that Link can't used for his own home?
BotW's DLC included Hero's Path, Travel Medallion, dungeon boss rematches, and a 5th dungeon, all of which TotK has from the start.
But TotK lacks a Hero Mode, Master Sword upgrade, (and Horse Teleportation bridle, but no one uses horses anymore).
Amiibo got short-sticked too. I believe the only new amiibo items are the glider fabrics. While they added the amusing Link's Awakening set, the Link's Awakening amiibo no longer drops fish like it did in BotW. Why remove that cute feature? Toon Link from WW still drops fish! And why doesn't Skyward Sword Zelda have even one cute unique item?
Also, the DLC items in BotW weren't upgradeable, presumably just because of being late additions. Why aren't the identical items in TotK given upgrades?

And this is all before mentioning the many and varied problems with the story.

You got it.
Ferryman stack is not in the supply, bane stack is.

Variants and Fan Cards / Re: Revised versions of published cards

I'm curious what a proper price for a 'regular-sized' turnip would be.
That is:
Turnip
+1 coffers
+1$ per coffers you have.
It would then be a strictly better silver, so probably $5?
Maybe even $6.

Edit: wrong board, thanks J Reggie.

I'll just chime in to say that I appreciate the Rewards remaining as 0-cost cards. I don't like the idea of setting up to win a truly unique card and immediately remodeling it into a Province. 'Gain a gold' (or Loot) cards offer that utility just fine.

8 new kingdom cards (80+8 randomizers, since none are Victory cards), plus 2x of each new Reward (12 total) for an exactly 100 card update pack.

That means no 'Bane' card.
I'd still like to know what the 'box inlay' situation will be.
Ideally, two separate inlays would be nice, one each to accommodate the early separate prints, with one being double-sided to be used for either the big box or one small box.

16
I admit I'm rather disappointed at the lack of a cheese-themed card to match the Guilds description.
Otherwise, generally good changes all-around.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Interview with Donald X.
« on: February 19, 2024, 09:19:36 pm »
Obviously I'm not Donald, but I can echo his prior statements from around the release of 2E and claim they're still relevant today.
Sorry, wasn't meant to be a card idea, but I got sidetracked while typing. Question was meant to be more like, if you think Thief would be more interesting again now that there's so much diverse and powerful treasure compared to what it was like when it was removed.
It still doesn't change the fact that in the early game Thief trashes your opponent's coppers for them.
This only ends up being a pitfall in games with beginners.
It also has weird scaling in 3-4 player games, allowing for extreme random power turns where you steal multiple 4+ cost treasures in one swoop (or else just improves their decks and leaving you with a pile of copper that you won't pick up. Actually, having the option to pick up 3 copper from Thief is a huge pitfall for new players). You also need to take into account that a card will most frequently be played with the others within its own set, and there are only base treasures in the base game.
Bandit fixed everything wrong with Thief. She doesn't help thin your opponent's deck, and always earns you a valuable treasure. It is not a new player trap as Gold is the most neutral "good" card you can possibly gain.
Even if Thief has the utility in modern games of sometimes grabbing you Loot or Fortune, the chances of that happening are very low, and just not worth it.

ll place my bets now:
Cornucopia:
Horse Traders, Remake, Fortune Teller
Guilds:
Taxman, Journeyman, and maybe Soothsayer? (Given Charlatan and Bandit, even though Soothsayer remains unique).
Donald wouldn't break up the Butcher, Baker and Candlestick Maker, would he?

When it gets down to it, all I want is a cheese-related card.
Assuming that young witch is not one of the removed cards, will we get a bane card in the update box?

Since I always buy first print of dominion, this is the only bane of my existance - the lack of a bane card.

There should be a place for it, since 9 cards and 1 randomizer leaves place for 1 blank.
I also have 1st Edition Guilds/Cornucopia boxes. The Bane card would be nice for an update pack, as would a pair of inserts for the smaller boxes.

Are you prepared to deal with all the "dude that card did NOT deserve to get removed" comments for Cornucopia/Guilds 2E?
A small price to pay if it means we get a Cheesemaker/other cheese-related card.
I'll place bets now:
Cornucopia:
Horse Traders, Remake, Fortune Teller
Guilds:
Taxman, Journeyman, and maybe Soothsayer? (Given Charlatan and Bandit, even though Soothsayer remains unique).

I always like a victory card with extra effects. As others noted, a good, if slightly late, fix to Silk Road.
Could be especially fun during the endgame alongside a green deck and Patrol.

chewbacca attacks your opponent's crossroads (but it makes their fools gold a lot better)
I don't follow.
Fool's Gold looks for 'Fool's Gold', 'Provinces', and 'Gold', depending on the time. If all cards in the supply are named 'Chewbacca', none of those checks would ever occur, so Fool's Gold is completely neutered.

Crossroads always checks to see if this is the first time you played a 'Crossroads'. However, with this, you played 'Chewbacca', not 'Crossroads',  and thus the check fails even the first time you play it, so you're right that it attacks Crossroads.

So, any card that says 'Gain an 'X'' wouldn't fire, whether that's Silver, Gold, Copper, Duchy, Estate, etc. But since card types are not affected.
Tournament can still win you a Prize (JUST KIDDING, your Province is now named 'Chewbacca', but at least the Peddler effect can't be stopped).
Dark Ages and Plunder cards can still gain Ruins and Loot, as those are card types.
Curses also are unaffected, as Curse is both the card name AND the card type.
You could still gain any Spirit from exorcist, but all other named spirit gainers fail. Leprechaun won't actually get you a wish if you play him just right either. Basically every card from Cornucopia is thus rendered worthless. You'll always guess right for Sorceress, but

Cards that benefit(?):
Farmland can now pick up itself when you buy it and use its insta-remodel effect, allowing you to keep chaining it.
Wishing Well becomes a full Laboratory
Mystic and Sorceress also work every time.
Rats can't pick up another Rats, so is just a nice cantrip trasher
Doctor just trashes the top three cards or rearranges them

I need a rules clarification on the meaning of 'Copy'
Can I choose to discard every single card I have in Exile when I gain any other card?
Can I buy a cheap card then Duplicate it to grab a Province?
Does Warlord make it so your opponent can only play two cards total?
Or does 'Copy' check on everything, name, types, card text, etc...?

Is there any plan for physical reprints of Captain/Prince with the 'Command' type?
I've held off on buying them from BGG because I don't want to cause confusion with new players when using Flagship or Maroon.

I had a rather amusing turn vs. the AI app a few days ago. (August 9, 2023 Daily Dominion).
Kingdom:
Pawn
Secluded Shrine
Swindler
Abundance
"Shy" Secret Passage
Courtier
Duke
Minion
Pendant
Torturer

Scrounge

The AI got quite a bit ahead of me in Province count, but I was able to strike back later with some nice Abundance/Scrounge combos to nab 6 Duchies and 6 Dukes, which brought me a nice victory.

The particular useful card interaction:
I even had a truly silly turn toward the end where had a Secluded Shrine, 3$, and 2 buys thanks to a Pawn, and the trash had no estates. I bought a copper, which allowed me to trash an Estate from my hand with the Secluded Shrine, and immediately got it back alongside the final Duchy with Scrounge.
