Dominion Isotropic / Re: Text or Images, Which do you use?
« on: December 31, 2011, 01:23:57 am »
I usually play with images. The only drawback, as others have alluded to, is that it makes me worse at distinguishing cards by their name, and there are still some treacherous interfaces that present only a name (not even color). Yes, I am embarrassed at how often I have accidentally passed a Colony instead of a Copper in a Masquerade.

Dominion Isotropic / Bug report: broken links to game logs

I just played several games on isotropic and noticed that the resulting game log links, such as the below, return 404s. Did the path on the server change or some such?

Game Reports / Re: Successful Mint Opening - thanks to Duchess

I find the trouble with opening Mint / x is that you end up with a 7-card deck, out of which 4 are useless Estates and Mint, and thus a pretty good probability of not getting enough to buy Silver for, actually, a surprisingly long time.

In your case, Haven is just the right thing, since you can get it with $2 and it's great in this kind of deck. If there wasn't a good $2 buy, you could easily end up drawing $2 on turns 3 and 4 and 5... With Mint/Pawn, you only effectively have $3 total, so it's even worse.

P.S. Haven is not one of the worst, it's one of the best.
Huh? Haven is one of the worst things to open 5/2 with mint because you only have $2 total in your deck, so you literally have to buy or mint a copper to get up to 3, then get the $3 together, then get rolling... it's totally not worth it.

Yeah, sorry for the unclarity, I meant that the OP made reference to two of the worst cards in general, but only Duchess makes that list; Haven doesn't.

After making my post, I did some math. With Duchess you actually have a 2/3 chance of $3 on turn 3, with Pawn it's 10/21, and with Lighthouse it's 2/7. At least with Pawn and Lighthouse, though, you can probably get another one if you only hit $2.

Here's a ridiculous game that featured the dreaded King's Court-Scheme and the even more dreaded King's Court-Goons-Masquerade, which backfires, destroying its own deck. Bear with the fog of Masquerade...

   --- Elyv's turn 21 ---
...
(Elyv draws: a Masquerade, a Fishing Village, 2 King's Courts, and a Goons.)

This and 1 copper is Elyv's entire deck at this point, and I'm pretty sure the preceding turns have been working up to this, since Elyv isn't even buying anything for VP with Goons.

   --- yoz's turn 22 ---
yoz puts a King's Court, a Scheme, and a Masquerade back on the deck (first on top).
(yoz reshuffles.)
(yoz draws: a Masquerade, a Scheme, a King's Court, a Crossroads, and an Ambassador.)

On my turn, I play some Masquerade followed by some Goons -- probably not the correct order, but Elyv ends up with 2 King's Courts and a Masquerade in hand. Then Elyv's combo goes poorly from this standpoint, as I save the copper I receive in Masquerade #1 to pass back in Masquerade #3:

   --- Elyv's turn 22 ---
   Elyv plays a King's Court.
   ... and plays a King's Court.
   ... ... and plays a Masquerade.
   ... ... ... (Elyv reshuffles.)
   ... ... ... drawing 2 cards.
   ... ... ... trashing a Crossroads.
... ... and plays the Masquerade again.
   ... ... ... drawing 1 card.
   ... ... ... trashing an Ambassador.
... ... and plays the Masquerade a third time.
   ... ... ... drawing nothing.
... and plays the King's Court again.
... ... but plays no action with it.
... and plays the King's Court a third time.
... ... but plays no action with it.
Elyv resigns from the game (client disconnected or unresponsive).

The final accounting is:

#2 Elyv: resigned (1st); 22 turns
      [4 cards] 2 King's Courts, 1 Masquerade, 1 Copper

In the Gardens Division yoz (21) wins 4 - 0 over sniprpenguin (44). Thanks very much for the games.

Game 1: sniprpenguin 0 - 47 yoz

This Colony game featured Vineyards. King's Court and Governor looked like they would be the interesting actions here, with Pawn supporting extra buys. sniprpenguin opened Governor-Pawn, and I went Loan-Potion toward Universities, hoping to be able to catch up in the Governorship race. The Universities certainly did help, as did Governor remodeling -- I turned a Potion into the last Governor on sniprpenguin's turn. sniprpenguin seemed to turn towards money as I increased my King's Courts, Pawns, and Smithies. After just 12 turns, the game ended in one fell swoop as King's Courting all those actions drew my whole deck, the Governors emptying the Pawns and the money buying out the Smithies.

Game 2: sniprpenguin 38 - 40 yoz

This game was pretty darn close. Border Villages gave us an excess of actions here. I went for a Tactician and more Hunting Parties, sniprpenguin for more Harvests. sniprpenguin got to an early Province lead, and I only hoped I could catch up from being able to cycle through to my Monuments more often. Turns 15-16, as luck would have it, sniprpenguin drew $7 twice and I drew $>=8. The second time, sniprpenguin decided to buy a Gold, and could have won if that were a Duchy instead. Finally on turn 17, sniprpenguin bought the last Province, coming up short.

Game 3: sniprpenguin 26 - 41 yoz

Grand Market and Possession on the board?! Okay, neither of those made a real difference. Rather, it was Bishops and Witches that counted. Probably the early break was that on turn 5, sniprpenguin passed up a chance at $5 by trashing a copper from my Bishop, while I'd gotten $5 on turn 3 and played my Witch on turn 5.

Game 4: sniprpenguin 34 - 51 yoz

Ambassadors early, Trade Routes late (worth $5 at the end, thanks to Harems and Dukes). I was slightly more successful on both ends. Despite both of us investing heavily in Lighthouses, they worked out better for their +$1 than for their protection from Ambassadoring.
