Dominion General Discussion / Re: Strictly Better
« on: June 29, 2019, 03:48:32 am »
Something doesn't have to be strictly better in order to have to cost more. Lab isn't strictly better than Woodcutter but it has to cost more.

However, Cathedral is three Labs (and more) and costs the same as Woodcutter.

How? Cathedral has nothing to do with drawing.

It's a meme-statement people started emphasizing to make fun of Awaclus's tendency to deliberately miscommunicate in order to make some tangentially related point several posts later. Awaclus still uses it in earnest.
yes that is very off-putting

good source of info tho

people are confusing a common vernacular definition with a specific game theory term

I bought them all and am happy I did.

make it a duration with a copper gain play effect imo

Anyway, Cutpurse is way too low.  In the early game, it's better than Militia.
I'd say it's about on par with it. They both usually take $1 away from you in the beginning.
It strikes me that Militia kills variance more than Cutpurse does?

Cutpurse takes $1 away from almost any early hand; Militia takes nothing from bad hands but $2 from good ones.

Doesn't that mean Militia's going to hurt more when people are trying to make their first $5 purchase?

even if your militia hits 2 estates, you might have prevented them from being trashed

I wonder how much that is worth

I probably missed this discussion earlier; but are first-edition cards left out of the rankings? I would assume so, otherwise where is Thief?

I disagree with that; just because a card isn't in the second printing of Dominion doesn't make it any less an official and real Dominion card.

If it's officially disavowed by the creators, then I'd consider it outside of the standard game.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Black Market Deck Setup Idea
« on: May 22, 2019, 09:20:27 am »
I just numbered all of my blank cards with different colored markers.

Red 1-10, Blue 1-10, Black 1-10 etc.

We use randomizer cards for the BM stack, then put the chosen cards aside and take blanks for our actual decks.

I've dead-drawn my first Throne Room in the last 6 games where I bought it.

I don't get it. What's the difference between a lowercase x and a multiplication sign?

Times New Roman Italic:

2(4) imo

For people who think Black Market is one of the best: how do you do the setup IRL?  It sounds unusable.

randomizer cards + numbered blanks

if you could play a game of giant Dominion where all the cards were like A4 sized

would you?

and if you could invite 2-3 famous people to play giant dominion with you, would you invite those people or would you opt to play giant dominion with your usual crew?

assume you can only play giant dominion the one time

Are you Reggie Watts?

after I read it over, I felt that it had a more Chuck Klosterman quality to it

2" binders with 9-slot sleeve pages work well

I have everything in 4 binders plus one medium-sized deck box

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Taking Notes - Against the Rules?
« on: December 24, 2018, 12:58:58 am »
I usually view taking notes during a board game as a "competition-level" rule rather than a "game-level" rule. (Of course, I'm coming at this from chess, where there are loads of competition-level rules, none of which you need to know if you're just playing a friendly game.)

I agree, but it seems odd that someone playing a friendly game would feel it necessary to take notes.

Maybe they just want to learn more about the game/their strategy.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Why is Possession hated so much?
« on: December 14, 2018, 01:42:19 am »
Possession creates a form of anti-Dominion, as other has pointed out, it's pretty fun the first few times but it's just get old in a way other types of games doesn't and even if I never hated Possession I don't miss it the slightest not being available on DO.

Possession and KC is a crime however. The fact that I never experienced it is perhaps why I don't hate the card.

you can play with it on DO, but it doesn't come up in random games—you have to select it

How about a treasure that's worth the average $value of the cards in your deck?

Also it seems to me that a major benefit of "online only" cards is that they do not have to keep the player honest.

To get a random card, just make something like a Black Market deck. Shuffle it, put it face down, and gain the top card.
I might just start playing Black Market like this with my friends lol

You can also argue that probably any 9th expansion is only for people who bought 8 expansions (or maybe 6-7 leaving out 1-2 that sounded bad to them), no matter what the contents.

300 year old post, but I feel like it didn't really pan out this way. One of the cool things about Dominion (imo) is that any combination of expansions is fine, and no set depends on having experience with any other set. That made it considerably less intimidating to get into for me, knowing that it basically didn't matter what order I bought them in.

A number of your older posts talk about how expansions can only do so much, and that you'd prefer to do more spin-offs. Obviously you thought releasing a recent expansion was a good idea (spoiler: it was :D), but do you still agree with past-DXV re: spin-offs?

Also, thank you to the above poster for quoting Donald's post re: Inventor.

Why the return to Bridge-like cost reduction with Inventor? (rather than Highway-like)

I'm into it.

I think Donald is opposed to actually changing what cards do, and would rather introduce a brand new card.  And so far, they've always been full reworks, and not anything like what I posted here.  The only exceptions I know of are making things explicitly optional if they would lead to "or prove you cannot" situations.
The problem is that the players hate us then. You bought the inferior Seaside, now we're selling the fixed version, you can't get the fixes unless you buy the whole box. Well look at how we're trying to bleed our fans...

...And I mean there are still people mad that they can't buy a box with just the cards from Guilds that say "Coffers" on them.

can't win either way hahaha
