Dominion General Discussion / Re: Teaching Dominion to young children?
« on: November 07, 2017, 03:52:47 am »
The age recommendation on the box is 8+ and even that seems low to me. While the basic concepts aren't that difficult, the strategy is deeper than in most of the games that are listed 10+.

I taught my oldest son Dominion when he was 9 (on a foreign language version, but at that age they can remember 10 different actions based on pictures) and he played a decent Big Money strategy at the time, but when he tried anything else it was way too inefficient. So either I would have to play suboptimally to make the game close, or I would win easily most of the time and he would get frustrated. Either way, one of us was not going to enjoy it. We just play different boardgames instead.

Teaching it to younger children... I don't know, it seems to be too much to ask for most children. There are other boardgames where they can be genuinely competitive and I think that would be way more fun for both parent and child.

I played my first game with Sauna/Avanto this weekend. Turns out a couple of Saunas and a couple of Silvers lets you thin your deck pretty fast, and the thinner it gets, the more reliable it becomes (also, pairing Saunas with Avantos becomes more reliable too).
It takes time to build it into a reliable double-Province engine, though, so the player decided to go single-Province, and in the end, my Wharf-Coin of the Realm draw engine eeked out an extra Duchy off the Wharf +1 Buy for a narrow win. Although I must admit my engine was probably worse and I was just lucky it never whiffed.

I like how Diplomat sets up itself through its reaction.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Madman megaturns

I performed a Madman-Bridge megaturn in a RL game a few weeks ago. The turn before, I had played Tactician so one Madman was enough to draw most of my deck. I had a couple of Bridges and some Royal Carriages waiting on the reserve mat, more than enough to empty the Province pile. One of the most fun combos I ever pulled off in a game of Dominion.
