Dominion General Discussion / Re: Cards That Combo With Tunnel Reaction
« on: October 25, 2011, 10:27:15 pm »
At this point, it seems that most viable Tunnel->Gold strategies will be those that rely on discarding cards later in the deck rather than in the hand.  The opportunity cost to having Tunnels in a deck with Navigator/Cartographer is relatively low (you are using a discard slot on a card that otherwise would not be in the deck, and occasionally pulling the card in your hand) whereas the opportunity cost to having Tunnels in a discard from hand deck is far higher because of the aforementioned fact that you are effectively limiting yourself to a 4 (or potentially 3 if you would not otherwise have purchased a cellar or secret chamber) hand.

Note that this does not hold for decks where your purchase of the discard from hand card is not contingent on you executing a Tunnel->Gold strategy.  Obvious examples are Minion where you were not trashing down to a pure Minion deck, and Vault.

Ergo, Scheme/Peddler for much of the same reason, again contingent on another card providing +buys.  Also keeps the thematic edge, since don't peddlers all have to be a little scheming.  Oh Donald, you clever, clever man.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Is border village a trap?
« on: October 25, 2011, 10:09:35 pm »
It is frequently advantageous to buy Border Villages over Gold when:

-- You are going to most likely remodel, farmlands or expand the BV into a Province/Platinum.  The extra 5$ card is effectively free in this scenario.

-- You are going for a quick 3 stack win.  Exhaust the BV stack and another stack simultaneously.

-- Conspirators and peddlers.

I enjoy how this thread has become a complaint-fest.  Allow me to join in!  I just had an opponent stay mute until I took more than 10 seconds to make a move at which point I got the marvelously eloquent "....", and then rage-quit at turn 11 or 12 when he was down 7 provinces to 0.  Everyday, I yearn for that blacklist a little more!

Is this something you would like to see develop, either with the game as it is or with future variations designed to accentuate the strategic element?

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Supporting Alchemists
« on: July 01, 2011, 02:35:03 pm »
It would seem that a fortune teller would be effective against an alchemist deck either in a game where there are no trashers, or after the player going alchemists has started purchasing provinces (obviously the fortune teller would be ineffective after the alchemist player had trashed all three estates but before he/she had purchased provinces).  Anyone have luck with this?  It would be very luck based, i.e., it would only work if the first green card in the deck came after all potions within the alchemist player's drawing range.

TP is a unique card in that it's elite as an opener, merely good at turn 3/4, and pretty much crap after that.

Cutpurse too, no?

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Duke Analysis?
« on: June 28, 2011, 12:54:08 am »
I feel like a discussion of duchy/duke vs. province is difficult to have productively without taking into account the board in question.  Some cards will favor duchy/duke over province strategies (bridge, hoard, lots of +buys, cursing cards with no trashers in play) whereas others will favor provinces (embargo, bank with no +buys, no +2 or more cards).

Just to add to the "gg is not gloating" point, the first gaming I ever did was tournament and club chess, where not shaking your opponent's hand after a game (be it a hard fought stalemate or a forced mate in the opening) is akin to spitting in your opponent's eye.  For me, saying gg is the analog to the chess handshake, and it feels unnatural not to type it regardless of how the game actually went.

There are also boards which are simply very high variance.  It's not much fun to lose in a board with Mountebank, KC, Chapel because your opponent went first and started 5/2.  I wouldn't look askance at an opponent who turned down an automatch like that, despite the fact that I personally will take almost anything (exception:  when automatched against someone with no ranking in a board with possession and KC I will sometimes turn it down).  That being said, if someone declines an automatch for no apparent reason I will usually decline repeated automatches with them or pull myself out of the queue for 30 seconds.

Very plausible!  In fact, the more I consider it, the more correct it seems.  The worst offenders (Counterstrike, DOTA-type games) all have very young average users.  Although I suspect that the age-civility linkage is less a generational thing (I know some baby boomers who are real pieces of work) and more a matter of teenagers being profoundly insecure, and consequently viewing online interactions in a more combative way.  Also young people tend to put a lot more weight in online interactions (particularly those who spend the majority of their time online) and older people tend to have more going on and so tend to care less -- although I realize that I am generalizing with abandon here and that there will be many exceptions.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Wishing Well/Scout Combo
« on: June 23, 2011, 04:58:49 pm »
There are however decks where wishing wells are very good (edit: by which I mean compare to the other 3 coin purchases on the board including silver), as I believe Theory has pointed out in a post on the strategy site.  I suspect that in decks where one or two action cards are of game-winning significance (e.g., curse givers in a deck with no trashers, the first kings court in a game where the first few kc + action combos will determine the winner) wishing wells quickly become the most desirable 3 coin and potentially even 4 coin purchase if there are no good 4 coin purchases.  In such a deck where you will already have the wishing wells, and where there are also great halls or harems, I wonder if a scout wouldn't be preferable to yet another wishing well...

I would echo Superdad's comment; the Isotropic community is anomalously polite.  I strongly suspect (and have suspected for some time) that this is because the community grew organically from hardcore fans of a tabletop games, and tabletop gamers tend to socialize in a manner fundamentally different than those who communicate primarily or exclusively via the internet.  I.e. You kind of have to be polite or your gaming group stops inviting you over to their house.

Edit:  Of course this wouldn't explain why so many unpleasant types play Magic or Warhammer.  OK, maybe my theory has a few holes in it.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: >2 Treasure Maps?
« on: June 20, 2011, 08:06:47 pm »
I believe DG is thinking of TR + IW-> Buy TM +1 action, place on deck (WT)-> Buy TM +1 action, place on deck (WT) -> Market, drawing TM -> Golem hitting the top TM and cashing for 4 gold with the TM in hand.

Also, I'm pretty sure he's joking given the unlikelihood of ever drawing the discussed hand.

Anyway, thanks for the feedback, this is very helpful!  In the past, I've left the TMs floating in my deck indefinitely to punish them for not coinciding on their own accord.  In retrospect, this strategy was suboptimal.

Variants and Fan Cards / Re: Really bad card ideas
« on: June 20, 2011, 06:23:48 pm »
Perhaps after official development, Donald X. will consider less serious promo cards along the lines of "Tickle opponent.  If opponent laughs while being tickled, +2 cards."  Now you're thinking, how would that ever be implemented on Isotropic.  The easy answer is:  your opponents have to tickle themselves.

Dominion General Discussion / >2 Treasure Maps?
« on: June 20, 2011, 06:15:30 pm »
Question: When, if ever, is it advisable in a 2 player non-colony game to get more than 2 treasure maps (TMs) to increase the odds of getting an earlier treasure map hand-in?  I appreciate your thoughts, substantiated or otherwise.

Edit:  Although Golem ->1st action TM -> 2nd action TM will trash both TMs leaving you with nothing but shame and regret (and a Golem), Golem ->1st action TM with a TM in hand will give you the 4 gold.  Has anyone had success with a TM, TM, Golem strategy?

Dominion Isotropic / Re: Decline of civility on isotropic?

To the extent that Isotropic is a relatively new community with inchoate mores, I think it's more helpful to guide etiquette by how you would want people to act in your ideal online Dominion community, rather than what you believe is expected by others.  For instance, all things being equal, I would prefer that people "gg" for all games that were politely played and stay silent for rude players (like those who take 1:30 for each move and discard and then ask their opponents to hurry up, you know who you are) then peremptorily leaving in most cases and saving the "gg" for a select few games.  But then, I enjoy post game discussion after an interesting game, and that puts me in a vanishing minority.  At the end of the day, it's not very important whether people "gg" or not as long they aren't sandbagging or typing profanity in all caps or what have you.
